PITTSBURGH. TUESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 15, 1859.
VOLUME XVIII.
Ijr~paitt ) Pool.
A Sharper Foiled.
„ .
Some three weeks since, a young man, well
dressed and genteel in appearance, stopped at
the Monongahela Rouse, registering his name
as H. Lanier, New York. Be asked daily for
a letter from New York, which had not arriv
ed. el few days after his arrival, Mr. Cross- • •
an, the landlord, received a letter signed J. ' , ',
J. Westerman, from New York City, enclos
ing
a check on the Union Bank of that city for ', ' s•
$lOO, which he desired hini to hand to Lanier, i'
lift a note held by him for that sum, with •
Westerman's signature, and send the note to
him. Mr. Crossan did so, and Lanier asked
him to take the check, deduct his boarding,
and give him $5O in money. Mr. Crossan
said it was hot his custom to do so without the
endorsement of some responsible party. Lan
ier then left, and returned after bank hours,
with a check on the Trust Company, signed
Leech and Hutchinson, for $3O, saying that
he had received that sum on the Eastern chiack.
This be asked Mr. Crossan to cash, but he
again refused, without collateral security, of
fering to take Lanier's watch and chain as
such. Lanier, with an air of offended dignity,
said be thought Mr. Crossan had more
confidence in him than to ask it—but the
latter was deaf to his solicitations. Lan
ier then disappeared. Next day a clerk of
Hall & Speer called to make enquiry concern
ing Lanier, saying that he had bought $l,OOO
worth of plows, paying for them iu New Or
leans, and that he had also tried to get money
on the New York check. It was now discov
ered that the cheek on the Trust Company was
forged, and search was made for Lanier, but
he had gone. Mayor Weaver telegraphed to
Capt. Walling, of New York, requesting him
to watch the post office for Westerman, to
whom Mr. Crossan had mailed the note pro
cured of banter. Yesterday a reply come to
hand, from which it seems that both Lanier

Aeon to the King of Sardinia has been present

The Emperor observes that the question is

, It was necessary to conclude a treaty that
should secure in the first manner 'possible the
independence of Italy, which shOuld satisfy
Piedmont, and yet which should not wound
the Catholic sentimentor the rights of the Sov
ereigns in whom Europe felt an interest. The
Emperor says he is bound by a treaty, and
cannot in the Congress which is about to open,
withdraw himself from his engagements. He
demands that the Duchess of Parma be called
to Modena; Parma be united to Piedmont and
Tuscany, augmented perhaps by a portion of
territory ho restored to the Duke Ferdinand;
and systems of moderate liberty shall be adopt
ed in all the
plan
of Italy. The Emperor
also traces a plan of Italian confederntion, with
the Pope as the honorary President, and says
that this increase of his moral influence will
enable him to make concessions in conformity
with the legitimate wishes of the population.
A correspondent of a Parisian journal has

The argument list was on in this Court
to-day; but no case of importance were ar
gued.
An application was made, upon a writ of
habeas 'corpus, for the discharge of James
Brightmore, a lad of about seventeen, from the
House of Refuge, where he was sent, in June
last, by the Mayor, for viciousness and incor
rigibility, baying been picked up at the Penn
sylvania Railroad depot, where he had been
loafing for some time, by officer Fox. The ap
plicants asked his discharge on tlit ground that
he had a guardian living, was 014 Cher vicious
nor incorrigible, and was not a fit subject for
the institution. The sister of the boy, who
was the petitioner, asked to have the boy
placed under her charge. After hearing the
testimony, the Court remanded the boy to the
Refuge, giving it as an opinion that, as the
boy's parents were both dead, and his guardian
being unwilling to act as such, it was the proper
place for him.
