Maryland Election.
Bwirstortn, November 3.—An the sixth
congressional district, Anne Arundle county
gives George W. Hughes, Democrat, for Con-
I
gross,' 119 majority—a Democratic gain of
nineteen -votes. In the fifth district, Frederick
county gives H. W. /Toffman, American, for
Congress, about 300 majority—a lm of 432
votes. Washington county gives Hoffman
about fifty majority. The :returns from the
State are very meagre. Those received seem
to favor the Democrats. The vote of the city
is not in yet. The Reformers have a small
majority in the Twelfth ward. The Coroner
held an inquest to-day, on the body of Sonny
White, the rowdy who was shot yesterday in
the Fourteenth ward. A verdict was rendered
attributing the killing to accident, the wound
having been inflicted by a stray shot. No evi
dence was elicited showing that Duffy, who
was arrested for the act, had anything to do
with it. An inquest is now in progress on the
body of Mr. A. B. Kyle, who died last evening
from injuries received.
[SECOND DIBPATC H. ]
Returns from Cecil and. Howard counties
show .a Democratic gain of six members of the
Legislature, four Representatives and two Sen
ators.
The returns indicate that the Democrats will
have a majority in the House. The Senate is
in doubt. The returns from the city, wards are
not complete yet.. The Americans will have
about 17,000 majority, which, of course, secures
their State ticket by a heavy majority. So far
there appears to be no change in congressional
delegation.
The inquest on Mr. A. B. Kyle is not con
cluded yet.
The Central Reform Committee beide meet
ing, and unanimously expressed the deepest
indignation and distress at the death of their
respected and excellent fellow citizen, Adam
B. Kyle, Jr., at the polls in the Fifteenth
ward, and resolved to attend the funeral to
morrow morning, inviting all lovers of law
and order, who regard, with sorrow and shame,
this crowning act of unparallelled enormities
of the recent election, to unite in the Amend
procession.
Another Slaver Captured.
Nzu , Torts., November 3.—lnfornustion has
been received at the Maishal's office that the
brig S. B. Hoope, lying at Pier N0..4, East
River, had been engaged on a slave voyfige,
from which she had just returned. The Mar
shal and two of his deputies proceeded to the
vessel and took possession of her. It is stated
that she was fitted out at Charleston. S. C.,
and went to Havana, thence to Cieufuegos and
the coast of Africa, where she took in a cargo
of negroes and landed them on the South side
of Cuba. After landing them there the mate
took the vessel to Campeaches, obtained fraud
lent papers and sailed for New York, where
he was dispossessed by a power of attorney
sent on from Charleston by the owner. When
she was first fitted out she was a schooner, but
the mate had her altered to a brigantine, and
brought her as such to this port. Her name
is in very small letters and she has been to
tally divested of her internal fittings as a
slaver.
Col. Payne, of the S. P. Hooper, took pas
eage on a bark for New York, but died on the
voyage. His remains were kept and buried at
Staton Island.
Deputy Marshal Miller is now in possession
f the slaver.
The mato is anxiously looked for, and it is
probable that the brigantine will be sold for
the benefit of the United States government.
Transportation of the U. S. Mail.
w LSIIINGTON CITY, November 3.—The
Postmaster General has concluded an arrange
ment with the Canadian Postoffice Department
by which the mails are to be transported for
the sea portage weekly. betwesn Detroit and
Liverpool, via. Portland, in the winter, and
via. the river St. Lawrence in the summer, the
service to commence by the trip of the first
steamer outwards from Portland, on the 2.61,h
inst. It is intended to have the mails of such
of them as may be thereby expedited for and
from the South, North Western, and probably
some of the South Western States sent in closed
mails between Chicago and Detroit on the one
side, and Liverpool and London on the other,
and for this purpose the assent of the British
Postoffice Department has been requested to
constitute Chicago and Detroit Exchange Offi
ces for the United States and British mails on
the side of Great Britain. Cork may also be
constituted an Exchange Office. The schedule
lines between Portland and Chicago to be forty
eight hours, and when the services commence,
there will be an . unbroken line of railway the
entire distance. This will be a very direct line
from the far west to Europe.
Hon. Tom Corwin in Brooklyn.
NEW Toni, November 3.—Hon. Tom Cm.
win, member of Congress elect from Ohio,
delivered a long address to an audience of
about two thousand, persons at Musical Hall,
Brooklyn, embodying his views of the doc
trines of the Republican party. He argued
that the irrepressible conflict bettieen free and
slave labor originated with the South Carolina
Nullification. He counseled, obedience to all
law, including the Fugitive Slave law, and de
fended Webster, Clay and Fillmore from the
charge of being favorable to slavery because
they recognized the law, and acted on their
duty as sworn officers of the Government.
He is opposed to the doctrine of Squatter Sov
ereignty, and repudiates the extravagant sen
timents promulged by Wendell Phillips with
reference "to Old Brown and Harper's Ferry.
"Popular Avereignty, in exercising its pow
ers in Kansas, had • resulted in four years of
civil war, out of which came that spectre of
insanity and treason, John Brown."
