$ '.• A. DOUGLAS.
:.ify of the Sentiter from Illinois,
' s lASable nominee of the Charleston
tson, isdaisy on the increase, not only
.:118 West and North-West, but also in the
'p l* South: ' The popular sovereignty platform
upon which he took his stand, and which he
has so gallantly maintained against assaults of
every kind, is accepted by the Democracy of
the North-West as a unit. In New York, too,
' ninety-nine out of every handred Demoerats
aro firmly resolved never to abandon the doc
trines of the Cintinnati platform. - 'Upon
this platform, as explained by Mr. Buchanan
in 1856, Mr. Douglas has placed himself. The
Democracy accept the doctrine of popular soy
ctleignty precisely' as Mr. Buchanan expressed
it in his letter of acceptance, that `the'peo
ple of a-terrritory, like those of a State,
shall decide for themselves whether slavery
shall or shall not exist within their limits."—
This is Democratic truth, and as such, Mr.
Douglas has most ably and unanswerably sus-,
tallied, it in his able essay on Popular Sover
eignty, and his still more able reply to Judge
Black, both of which we have laid before the
r.saders of THE POST.
. Wherever Judge Douglas has spoken,—
wherever his able arguments* have been read,
the 'voice of' public opinion . is With him and
for him. Ills -speeches in Ohio largely re
decedthe Republican majorities in the coun
ties where they were made. The effect of his
teat influence is seen and felt in the pending
campaign in Now. York. The Nominating
Contention- in, that Stitt , conducted its busi
ness ' %kith - evident regard. to the coming man
from Illinois. The tone and temper of the
Southern press is daily turning towards Mr.
Douglas, its the only man who can successfully
meet Sewardism, with its "irrepressible
diet!' doctrines—so dangerous to the Soisth.
In Pennsylvania the friends of the Little
Giant compose the large Majority . of the Dem
cratic party. The delegates to our State Con
vention' will soon have to be selected. Lot the I
friendi of Popular sovereignty, and of the
advocate see to it that men are sent to
Harrisburg, who will correctly represent them
andtheir sentiments. At the Charleston Con
vention 'the influence of the Keystone State
will be a tremendous one, and the friends of the
Constitution andthe IJnionl-the lovers of bar
non;Y" tho DeMocratic
. party—are not so
blirid-but 'they see that Douglas is the only
• ,
man 'with whom to meet the sectional Itepub
liCanthe - Coining contest. With himthe
