SATURDAY MORNING
THE WEEKLY POST may be found in om
counting room, this morning. It contains
the observations of Judge Black on the
Harper article by Senator Douglas.
THE NEWS
The disturbances at Harper's Ferry are at an
end. Quiet is restored to that romantic vil_
lage, and soon things will resume their usual
appearance there. The five prisoners who fell
into the hands of the troops were despatched
yesterday, under a strong escort, to Charles
toivr, Virginia, where they are to beindicted
for murder and tried. The Circuit Court
opens there to-morrow. Brown, who is not
dangerously wounded, is among them. They
are to be prosecuted by the State, and, in case
of their not being convicted capitally, are to
be handed over to the United States authori
ties to be tried for treason. A letter from
District Ould which is published in the Cirnsfi
tation says There are only five prisoners,
three wounded and two unhurt. Six citizens
have- been killed, and one marine. All the
citizens were killed outside the limits of the
United States territory in Virginia. The
marine was mortally wounded within it.
have seen Col. Lee, but not Governor Wise.
Only nineteen persons were engaged in the
matter, of whom five were free negroes from
the North."
The deportment of the U nited States marines ,
under Colonel Harris; during the late insur
rection at Harper's Ferry, is the subject of
universal praise. It shows the advantage of
discipline over disorderly and undisciplined
troops. The marine corps is that branch of
the public service more unjustly assailed than
others. It is always useful in cases of popular
tumults. The action or this corps during
the riots in -Washington, shortly after Mr.
Buchanan came into the Presidency, pro
duced instantaneous wholesome consequences.
The papers found on the person or in the valise
of Brown, received by the Government, con
firm the reports that his scheme had advocates
in various States, who were well informed of
his plans and movements for a servile insur
rection. It appears that he kept a journal, in
which4te detailed his transactions, showing his
pure aSe of arms in large quantities, and am
munition of all kinds, with other warlike ap
pliances. In addition to the above, it is said.
that there is nothing in the papers to implicate
negroes or others resident at Harper's Ferry,
or its vicinity as "particepsc riminis" before the
fact in Brown's conspiracy.
The horse railroads of Boston employ K .
cars, 1375 horses, carrying an average 45,-
175 passengers daily, and the receipts for the
year amount to $750,000, or about $2lOO per
day. The Traveler says the increase of bun
upon these roads astonishes those most
interested in their success.
Rev.-John Angell James, an in,endent
Minister at Birmingham, EnglandZ -- a very
voluminous writer, has jug died in -- f:iigland.
He - was eloquent, earnest and convincing in
the pulpit., rand, as a clergyman; exercised un
usual influence in Birmingham—the Pittsburgh

the time of his admission into the Ministry.
lie was overfond of news-paper and pamphlet
wars., and distinguished himself. during many
successive years, by attacking theatrical per
formances.. His last anti-theatrical discourse
elicited a reply from Alfred Bunn, then mana
ger of Birmingham Theatre, who handled
the reverend gentleman without the g,lovess, and
concluded his response with the words, " You
may be ah Angel,James—but a fallen one."
.This sentence got into general use in Birming
ham, where it was chalked on the walls'and
pavement,,and actually annoyed Mr. James so
much that, from the time it was printed, he
ceased his diatribes against plays and players.
Argument had failed to silence him: but ridi
cule succeeded.
The City Bank of Racine, Wis., suspended
on Monday morning. The Racine Journal
says bill holders need not feel uneasy, as they
are amply secured. We don't feel uneasy, but
the reason is we have not got any of the notes
of the bank.

The Messrs. Winans, of Baltimore, the en
terprising builders of the "Winans steamer,
are preparing materials for another steamer
of the same model, on a more extended scale,
and combining all the improvements suggest
ed by the frequent experiments made with the
present vessel, which is looked upon by her
builders more in the light of a model to be im
proved upon than a perfect specimen of marine
architecture.
In. recording the disappearance of the Hod.
Jonathan Morrill, of Massachusetts, under
suspicious circumstances, the _Providence Post
remarks—"ln view of the frequent forgeries,
defaleatione, swindlings, throat cuttings, stah
bingi,;-poisonings; and-So-forth, in the Bay
State, we think the Anti-slavery society ought
to have another meeting and denounce a little
'harder the awful state of things out South."

Clock
A Valuable
A man in Brooklyn. the other day, pur
chased art old clock at a picture store, and, on
overhauling its interior, found carefully stowed
away, bank notes to the amount of three thou
sand pounds. These valuablepietures were on
the Bank of England, issued in the reign of
Queen Anne: They are so old that the brok
ers of New York refuse to cash them, and the
fortunate tinder intends to send them to head
quarters for redemption. This old clock is an
other illustration of the old saying that "Time
is money." What a shame that the venerable
time-piece should for so many years have gone
on tick, with cash in its possession! The old
clock is almost as censurable as those .Milesian
beggars who solicit charity in the streets,
while they, at the !lime time, have snug sllills.
"salted down " in the savings banks,
o, sowatto rile Brown.
A bolder or worse num, says the Cleveland
Di•oleccat than that same OisOwativinie Brown,
the world never . knew. 'His single virtue,
linked with a thousand Crimes," was bull.
dog courage. Fanatic to the highest degree—
a pupil, in politer, of the Giddings school, ho
has been taught to believe that the killing of a
sieve holder was an act which God would ap
prove. 'When iu that city last spring, in his
lectures he told of his stealing negroes and
running them to Canada—of his stealing her
which he then had With him for sale—of
hip shooting down slay . c holders, and of other
acts equally atrocious. And now, said Brown,
" I wish to know if the people of Cleveland
approve of what I have done. Those who
approve of toy acts will say Aye," and snore
than one half of his audience, composed .of
Abolitionists, shouted " Aye," while not a
single " Nay" was uttered by any one present.
Such approval ea this, and the question was
put at all his lectures, gave Brown confidence,
that hi, party would sustain him in whatever
he wioht do against the leen of the South,
and thus emboldened, the miserable wretch,
by servile insurrection, sought to overthrow
