TUESDAY ➢TURNING
OCT. 18
Senator Douglas in Wisconsin
THE DELEGATES TO THE CHARLES
TON CONVENTION.
The Democracy of Pennsylvania have
never, we believe, withheld their support
from the nominee of a National Convention
of our party. The fair nomination of any
Democrat, under the two-thirds rule, has al
ways been regarded as final, conclusive and
- binding upon the party. There has never
been an occasion when the political welfare
of the Union demanded a Democratic tri
umph more imperatively than that which
the Presidential contest of 1860 will pre
sent. It is most important that the action
of the Convention should be harmonious.
Nothing should be. permitted to distract or
divide the party during the great contest
which is approaching. The political obliga
tion that the members of a Convention
should support its nominee is a most sacred
and binding one. It is a law of politics.
sanctioned by immemorial custom, that the
representatives of a political party are re
quired to surrender their personal prefer
ence in favor of the nominee. It is the un
doubted duty of all good Dcpocrats to give
their most earnest and hearty support to the
nominee of the Charleston Convention,
against all others, provided the Cincinnati
platform—the two thirds rule. and-gle great
general principles of the party are properly
regarded in its action. It is obvious that
dissensions in the Democracy must be tot.-
lowed by the triumph of Republicanism.--
The men who are selected by the several
States as delegates to that Convention should
all be such as would at once forego then
personal preferenee, in case their own can
didate is unsuccessful, and go in heart and
soul for the nominee. The personal ene
mies of in y of the candidates should be ex
eluded from a seat in that Convention, and
no politician should be sent there by the
people who will seek to disturb the harmony
of the Democracy by raising unnecessary or
impracticable issues, or whose personal op
position to any one of the prominent candi
dates is such that he will refuse to support
him if fairly nominated. The Convention
which is to assemble at Charleston in June
next is an important one for the party and
for the" country.! It. should not he com
posed I.l' 1,11t,r and uncompromising parti
i.ans, but of calm, intelligent. judicious and
patriotic representatives of the great body o
the people who will faithfully and Demo
cratically curry out the wishes and the great
national conservative principles of the masses
of the party, both of the free and slave
States. The doctrines of the Cincinnati
platform should be regarded as the taxis dud
embodiment of the great vital principles of
the party : and in the appointment of dele
gates to the Charleston Convention lii ni
Pennsylvania, care should be taken to -.i
lea men who are not so strongly prejudiced
in favor of men that there will he clanger of
them taking any position which will elasli
with the great intore,t, of the party hereaf
ter. While they should labor with mail
ing zeal and activity t.r the man of then
ehniee. they must he men prepared eheer
fully to sulanit to the decision of the major.
ay. It is the duty of the people to see to
it that such men are sent to (l it ries:mu ;is
will truly represent their will, and carry out
their wishes.

Mr Douglas' essay we have already published,

appeared eer this, had not pressing matters
pertinent to the election claimed such space in
our columns as to preclude the possibility of
inserting an article of so great length.
The construction to be put upon the Cincin
nati platform, is the great subject which will
be discussed by the Democracy previous to the
assembling of the Charleston Convention
The essay of Judge Douglas and the reply of
the Attorney General thereto, present all the
leading--arguments which can be adduced on
both sides of the question of popular sover
eiznty in the territories. It is rare, in the po
litical history of the country, that the argu
ment of an important question has fallen into
the hands of two such able jurists, acute and
logical reasoners and accomplished scholars.
The question is a gigantic one, and it meet
that it should be discussed by intellectual gi
ants. As the conductors of a public journal,
we deem it our duty to lay before the people
all that has been or may be written upon the
great question. It is before the forum of the
people that this question must be argued and
decided, and we are too good a Democrat to
keep back one side of the argument, _and pre
sent only the one which meets our convictions,
as the Washington Constitution, and many
other public journals have done.
In tomorrows Post; we shall commence to
lay before our readers, the able, but we think
not unanswerable argument of Judge Black in
reply to Mr. Douglas. The essay of the Sen
ator from Illinois, and the reply of the Attor
ney General thereto will be the political text
books of Democracy iu the coming Presidential
campaign: - ----
The differences of opinion between the great
leading men of the party are no cause why
the public speeches and essays of either side
should be withheld from the people. It is
their:duty to " examine all things and hold
fast that which is good."

Crucinutio t 9..oNs' PlArros are thus spoken of 1... y the

THALBERG says:—"They are beyond comparison fh
best I have ever seen in the United States, and writ Corn

GUSTAVE BATTER say=" The opinion which I ex
pressed three yeare ago, has been more than confirmed
to roe, by the continued use of them, viz: That for vol

they are unequalled.'r . .
[From the National Intelhgencer, Washington.]
"'They can safely bear comparison with instruments
from any part of the world, In point of tone, strength
and elasticity of touch."
[From the New Orleans Picayune.]
" For o,seellence of material. elegance of finish, and

[From the Family Journal.)

••The peculiar musical qualities belonging to the Chick

sound, so disagreeable to the sensitive musical ear.
They have tib-o an easy, even and pleasant touch, and
will Iteeti in tune better than any Pianos known.
The publie are invited to call and examine these
splendid instruments, which are sold at

and Consumption.
In compounding a Cough Syrup for general use, the
physician—for none but a physician should attempt a
prescription—is compelled, from his knowledge of the
constitution and constituted parts 44 man, to avoid on
tirely the addition of drugs that eau in any way Send to

such

Although a cough may arise from a variety of causes
