AN ITENOFnr. FIREMEN.—SOMe:CUriouS ex

test a new contrivance for protecting firemen
from the action of the flames, and enabling
them to resist a stront heat. It consitts of
gloves made of amianthas, a kind of filainen-•
tout mineral, a helmet of the same material
fitting into another of wire gauze. and a shield
one Metre in length, and eighty i, , entimetre.
broa: betides other garments the above
mentioned material,. Three men having put
on the gloves were enabled to carry iion'bar:
at.n white heat for thtee mii.utes, without be
ing obliged to let go their bold. Straw was
afterwards set fire to in a large cast iron eel.
dron, and continually kept up, while a fireman,
- wearing the double helmet above mentioned,
stood above the flames, which he warded off
with the shield. Although they rose at times
abOve his head, he was able to keep his post for
a minute and a half. Numerous otherexperi

EAST 01 F/1. E SEEL:I:M.-OEI Friday and
Saturday, when it was currently reported that
Major .McElhinny, one of the County Corn
misaioners was dane-ernilly ill and not likely
to recover, two or three hungry and impatient
office seekers begun log-rolling for the succes
sion; by soliciting the influence of certain
parties in power in their behalf. But the ap
pearance of the redoubtable Major, at ten
o'clock on Saturday morning, in a reasonable
state of preservation dispelled their air-built
castles, and blasted their hopes of getting a
finger in the County Treasury, at least this
term.
