It was an agonizing, a terrible awakening to Lawrence-and it came nova whit to soon. One morning in a rage, Sophia struck Sally to the floor, and Lawrence coming un observed up the walk, was a spectator to the disgraceful scene.' As he gazed upon the pawn -lit features of his betrothed, love died out, and anger usurped its place, as he marked this pleading tearful face of the strieken girl. The following evening, Sally, who had all day, alternately been scolded and jeered at, stole out and wandered down a grass-grown avenue, leading through the meadow to the side: of the clear sparkling stream. She sat down upon a mossy stone, and gazed toward the distant west, where the day-wardens weresilently closing the crimsoh portals be hind the departed sun. Never, neve,. had life seemed so full of . bitterness to the suffering girl as now. She could not, as was her wont, see her Father's smile in the flowers, nor hear His voice in the whispering breeze. The darkest hour to her had arrived. Was it. a pressage of lights soon to dawn ? She prostrated herself upon the yielding moss, and cried in agony : "0 God, my father! the cross 1 bear is growing too heavy for my weakness. Let me die—let me die !" A hand fell upon the dark locks of the grieving one, and a voice, inexpressibly sad ttor Lawrence Lanmere was suffering,) said : "My poor child, do not grieve so." Sally started to her feet, paling with emo tion ibr she recognized the tones of the speaker; and Lawrence looking for the see and time into the eloquent eyes. irradiating the pallid Mee of the deformed girl, forgot that a form of ugliness developed the soul gazing from their depths. Sally could only place her hands in those of Lawrence. out stretched to receive them. The first stars coming out in blue above smiled upon the first earthly friendship of Sally the hunch-back. "I can go Lack mov ti i my with toy olden cheerfulness. for you hare given ini• the few kind nod, without which every power was failing," she said al amid the gathering of ingiit's purple shadows, she bade adieu to Lanmere. Lt.wrence kindly, but in a straightforward ' manner, which left no room for doubts, in formed Sophi t that she might consider their engagement at a termination. While he was deeply pained at the un womanly spirit he had seen her manifest, he at the same time was thankful that he had, although by the merest aecident, bee n made aware of her unhappy disposition. He begged her 1 ,, cultivate those graces so eminently. calculated to attract admiration and respect, and to subjugate the temper so fatal to the liner feelings : but he appealed to a statue of stow• as tar as impchiiibilit went. Site frigidly. informed him she did not need n perceptor to teach her good be havior, and turne.l from him. Upon Sally fell a furious storm ofreproach, invective and siireieMa: but Sall: hail a friend and the retry• thought brought trength to her nerves and patience to her long strug gling spirit. Lawrence Lanmere met the little hunch back often, and in spite of himself, became charmed with the fresh, earnest soul of Sally, He could look down into it just as one see the golden particles beneath pellucid water , . it was filled with rich, wild, peculiar, inia gery and delicious sentiments: and added to these, was a clear, alway: , plainly-defined Sense of the good and truthful—and inborn discernment that defeated sophistry or false and crude reasonings. He saw that there was nothing petty, nothing. low or grovel ling in her nature. Placed in the scale to counterbalance all these endowments and capabilities, seldom found in one individual, was the ill shaped body. There was no concealing the fact that this was ungainly and unlovely. Alas ! for poor hunch-backed Sally, if this side of the scale should in the end preponderate ! Alas ! I say, for the girl loved Lawrenee Lanmere—loved him ardently, devotedly, with a strength and fervor which suscepti ble natures alone are capable of. It was a lore which demanded a return, or would itself consume the altar upon which it burn ed, making life the great sacrifice—and it kaa returned. The solemn eye- of the stars witnessed their betrothal; and as they wended their way homeward through theold orchard, the aged trees, with leafy lips, whispered a bless ing, and showered fragrant pink blossonr , upon the lovers' heads. Mrs. Wilde received Lowrence Lanmere's overtures for the hand of her daughter con descendingly but coldly, while Sophia ( Es ther was already married and from home ) muttered something about "incongruity:' I never for a moment doubted that. Law rence and Sally were supremely happy as husband and wife, when I saw how tender ly, almost reverently, he attended upon her footsteps gratified her slightest wish, while she strove in the earnestness of her pure, true heart, to make him happy. But fate weaves dark, mystical emblems among our wreaths of roses and traces terri ble characters upon the walls of our palaces. So, stern and inscrutable 4 signaled death to Sally, long before she went from the light and warmth of her lately found love, down into_ the cold waters of the turbid stream rolling between us and the more perfect bliss. The puny, dwarfed body wore out rapidly before the boundings of the impris oned spirit. Consumption lighted its hectic glow on the pale cheeks, and kindled tires in the lustrous eves. The life beg,art in darkness, closed amid light and love. to go on again in that world where, with the father, earth's children rest. Lawrence laid his darling's head upon a clay pillow, with grief wringing his heart ; but her last words, like the most exultant strain in a heaverdy harmony, constantly rang in his ears. They were: "My husband to good—make those about you happy—aim to become pure, God like, and blessings will crowd 'your path. God is fatherly!" S BRYAN, Late of Lancalter & Caisuo, Pitegh GEO. S.
