Murder and Lynch Law at Mound City
illhoois
. The St. Louis papers bring us the particulars
of a murder and the summary execution of the
murderer at Mound City. Illinois_ The cir
cumstances of the parties to tee killing were as
follows, as detailed by a correspondent of the
_Democrat
"On Saturday night last, a desperado of
considerable notoriety in that locality, named
James Vaughn, in company with one of the
operatives at Goodloe s foundry, name un
known, got on a spree and became inebriated
to a considerable extent. Subsequently, the
two fell in- - wtih a carpenter or machinist from
Pennsylvania, by name John K. Charles, sim
ilarly afflicted. They continued together, and
in the course of the evening, or of the evening's
conversation, there seems to have been a clash
of opinion between Vaughn's companion and
Charles; resulting in a clash of arms—boots and
Eats. They closed, and in the ensuing strug
gle, Charles proving himself the more sober
'man, got rather the better of the foondryman,
observing which, Vaughn, who stood by, drew
his pistol and deliberately shot Charles through
the heart, killing him instantly. Vaughn
instantly - disappeared, and crossing to Ken
- tacky, fled. He was pursued, however, Sun
day, by officers, who overtook him about ten
miles below Cairo. He was armed with a gun,
which he presented, but was, nevertheless,
captured' without difficulty, taken back to
Mound. City and lodged in jail, to await an ex
amination. Late Saturday - night a crowd
gathered, went to the jail, and armed with a
loges a battering ram, effected an entrance,
and taking Vaughn out, notified him that 15
minutes would be generously allowed him to say
his prayers and attend to any other matters he I
chose, preparatory to having his " mortal coil
shuffled off." Hardly appreciating the reality
of the thing at first, his cries when the truth
began to break upon him were heartrending—
increasing in force and piteousness as the stolid
indifference of his captors showed how fixed
was their purpose for blood, and how surely the
'retribution for his villainy was at hand. Neither
prayers nor cries could defer the appointed
time however, and at the minute he was run up
a tree by the excited throng, where he hung
till he was dead. He was left hanging till
next morning, when he was cut down by some
of his friends and taken away. The thing was
done determinedly, and at the scene of blood
there seems to have been general unanimity of
feeling. The appearance of his father, an in
dividual enjoying considerable notoriety in the
same way as his son, and his companion of
Saturday night, had well nigh cost them their
lives, and they made themselves scarce sud
denly."
Da. SCHENCK NOW IN THE CITY.--This
distinguished physician and auscultator is now
in this city, to examine and prescribe for pa
tients troubled with Pulmonary Consumption
or any other Lung disease. The invention of
Respinometer has enabled him to do this:
and besides he has had an experience of over
twenty years in the treatment of these diseases.
Any of our readers who desire to consult him,
can do so until Saturday evening of this week,
beyond which period he cannot possibly re
main, as his practice in Philadelphia will re
quire his attention. Dr. Schenck has visited
Pittsburgh at the urgent solicitation of several
persons who desirelPhis services, otherwise he
would not have come. The present, there
fore, is the only, and a most favorable oppor
tunity to consult him—a better than which will
not soon be afforded. He may be found at
any time during the present week at the office
of the Drug Store of Dr. Keyser, 140 Wood
street. His price for examination with the
Respinometer is three dollars—advice in other
respects free. Any person not able to pay for
an. examination will be attended to free of
charge.
• BOOS, MONBETS AND GOATS.-A good
audience assembled at the Pittsburgh Theatre,
last evening, to witness the performances of
Sig. Donetti it Col. Wood's Burlesque Circus
Troupe, composed of monkeys, gnats and dog..
The performance was unique and very enter
taining; the animals exhibited a high degree of
training, and all present seemed to enjoy the
Antics of this singular companY. Many of their
teats are truly astonishing, and it would seem
almost impossible that they can be performed
without the aid of reason.' The feats of Jug
gling and Balancing by the Greek Rhigas were
not the least entertaining part of this quaint
exhibition. They appear again this evening,
and to-morrow afternoon and night. Every
one should go and see them.

"Nature sleeps se pure and white
She seems a corse in winding sheet.,
Whosehappy soul has gone to meet
The blest angelic train."
May our hearts retain their warmth, and our
minds turn honestly and cheerfully to our less
fortunate brethren, by whom the approach of
this season Is observed with trembling and ap
prehension. Let us, then, remember the poor,
and forget not that of all Christian virtues the
greatest is charity.

ANDENHOFF'S REA DINuS. -- Mr. George
Vandenhotl gave the first 91 his readings
before the Young Mens' Mercantile Library
Association at Lafayette Hall, lust evening,
to quite a large audience. The evidence of his
capacity and popularity as a reader Is in the
fact that a large proportion of his audience
were those who attended his first readings here
His subject last evening was, '. Hamlet," an
analytical discourse, with readings from that
fine production, and the ellia-t with which they
were rendered stamp him as a fine elocution
ist and a studied orator. This evening he gives
a lecture on the purposes of comedy, with read
ings from Shertidan's "Critic." We trust he
may have a full audience, such a one as hi
merits entitle him to expect.
