Mrs. Davidson Publishes a Vindication
Mrs. Elizabeth Davidson, who gained a no
toriety in this city not very creditable to her
self, and who has, more recently, been in
trouble in Canada, publishes in the Toronto
Leader, of the °7th, ult., a long card, narrating
the "shameful treatment' . she received in that
city. She states in many words, that all the
money she had—sl,l6o wa4 taken from her
when she was arrested on a charge of passing
counterfeit money—that her jewelry was torn
off—that a detective refused to allow her to
telegraph home, or even to assist her in getting
counsel to defend her. She alleges, that the
attorney she finally sia•ceeded in getting treat
ed her badly—refusing to get the evidence she
desired, until she had given him an order fur
ten dollars which was known to he good, and
that he even then did not ptocure the testimo
ay. She was obliged to pledge a fifty dollar
ring to get a detector. She was charged with
carriage` used by the police while under ar
rest, and being taken ill, was refused a physi
cian on two different days. No ono War , al
lowed to speak to her, and persona calling on
her were, not permitted to see her. She state,
that a detective searched her luggage, and that
a diamond ring, a wedding present from her
husband, has not been returned ; other articles
were missing, among them a set of silver forks
worth fifty dollars. She also states that the
fifty dollar bill on the Exchange Bank, of this
city, supposed to be counterfeit, has since been
redeemed at the counter of the bank.
The Leader publishes the following letter,
addressed by Mayor Weaver to the. Mayor of
Toronto:
OFFIcE,
PITTSBURGH, September 17, 113.39.
His WORSHIP THE MAYOR or TORONTO, C. W.
I observe by your papers that a Mrs. David
son, resident of this city, has been arrested on
charges preferred against her in your city.
Mrs. Davidson has been a resident of this city
for about twenty years, and I am not aware
that she has ever been tried for any offense
whatever in any of our courts. Her relatives
and friends here are quite respectable I have
been requested to write your Worship to inter
cede for her, a stranger in your city.
H. A. WEAVER, Mayor.
If the statement of Mrs. Davidson be cor
rect, she has indeed suffered much wrong. We
have no comments to make on the above, but
copy the remarks of the Leader introductory
to the statement, which seems to corrobo
rate it:
We publish below Mrs. Davidson s state
ment of the treatment she has received at the
hands of the police authorities of thi , city
That she has been badly used there is no room
for doubt. The rough and even violent treat
ment of which she complains is certainly very
discreditable to the parties coocerned. More
than all this, statements were made that her
conduct at the Rossin House was not correct.
We have inquired into this matter, and have
been convinced that these statements were to
tallyunfounded; that her behavior was entirely
unexceptionable, and that she conducted herself
in a lady like manner. It was quite natural
that a female of nervous temperament should,
under the circumstances in which she was
placed, exhibit a good deal of excitement.
?Tot the least extraordinary part of the case
is the mistakes into which the brokers, who
were examined in the case, fell. Ono hundred
dollar note which they swore in the most posi
tive manner was bad, has been cashed by the
bank by which it was issued.
We Understand that Mrs. Davidson has been
advised by parties connected with the Pitts
burgh banks to sue for heavy damages. It is
reported that she will sue one house in the city
for its share in the proceedings against her.
claiming $20,000 damages.
NEW TICKET SYSTEM.—On Monday, a new
ticket arrangement, recently adopted by the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company, went into
operation at all the stations along the route.
The systeni is known as Edmundson's patent,
and is coming into general use on the leading
railroads. It consists of a case, very neatly
and conveniently arranged, with one hundred
and ninety-eight compartments, each compart
ment holding a number of tickets, and so ar
ranged that a ticket can be slipped out from
below without disturbing those above. Each
compartment represents a station, and the
ticket for one static)] is readily distinguished
from another. The ticket agent is also fur
nished with a small press, by which the date of
the ticket is printed in a moment. The entire
arrangement is a great saving of labor in sign
ing and registering tickets, and it works with
precision. It also saves the agent the labor of
making daily returns of the sale of tickets.
The inventor certainly made "a good hit," as
we understand he gets ten thousand dollars for
the right to use it on a single railroad.
LITTLE MARY M'VICKE,R, who has recently
played a successful engagement at Boston, and
is now at Albany, will shortly appear at the
Apollo Theatre. The Boston papers speak
highly of her abilities, and say she pleased all
who saw her. The Boston Journal says : "The
musical abilities of Miss M'Vicker are rare,
and her cultivation is much beyond hor years.
Great care and constant endeavor should be
practiced in the development of this acquire
ment. We trust that the little lady will make
us another visit soon, and assure her of a warm
welcome."
PHOTOGRAPHED.—On Tuesday afternoon the
members of the Eclipse Barge Club, who re
cently took a pleasure excursion up the Alle
gheny, repaired with their barge, the Alba•
tross, to the still water near Herr's Island, in
the Allegheny, where the boat was anchored,
and the crew took their places in the boat,
with their oars. Mr. Cargo took two tine pho
tograph views of the boat and crew, which
looked exceedingly well. One will be placed
in the parlor of a gentleman of the club, as a
memento of the expedition. -
IMPORTANT ARRANGEMENT.—The several
railroad hues constituting the Lebanon Valley,
East Pennsylvania, and New Jersey Central,
have completed arrangements for the running
of two daily express trains from New York,
to connect at Harrisburg with the trains on the
great•Penniylvania mate.' The' new arrange
ment will go into effect about the first of
November.
