DEMOCRATIC COUNTY TICKET
EIEOPESEVE 313D(LE OP THE COME OF CoSI,P,S PLEASE
GEORGE F. GILLAIORE-
Extract from Judge Douglas' Speech Deli
ered at Pittsburgh.
Were the Democracy of PenllSZill, lnia now
going to throw away the prestige of the old
Keystone State, to forget their glorious history
in the past, and to wheel into the ranks of Abo
/itionism or modern Republicanism If they
did, it would be their own act, and not the act
of their opponents. The Republicans had no
chance of success, except in the dissensions of
the Democracy, and while he would always stand
Up for principle, and never yield it for the sake
of .harmony, yet, in order to preserve the prin
ciples of the party, he would surrender anti
personal prejudices and hostilities he ,night
hare. [Good and cheeni.] The part of wis
dom and patriotism was only to remember past
quarrels in order to profit by them. W herever
there had been past issues that had died. all the
asperity which they over created should be
buried with them, and we should only look
ahead in the future, holding forth the &aline,- of
Democracy, with our principles emblazoned on
it in clear and unequivocal lanKua , e, and
RALLY UNDER THE ORGANIZATION
OF THE PARTY.
The first of October is the last day upon
which assessments can he made. Those who
have hitherto neglected the matter, should
examine the assessment lists, and if their
names are not down upon it, get assessed
forthwith. Do not neglect this matter.
The Democratic State and County tickets
for the approaching election are now print
ed and ready for delivery. The County
Cominittee have prepared a list of Districts
Which is left at the office of the MotiNiNt:
POST, where the tickets will be furnished foi
each district. The Democracy will attend
to sending for their tickets and seeing that
they are properly distributed, so that in
election day no one may be without a ticket
OUR WEEKLY.
,THE WEEKLY Posr, for the present week,
Contains Mr. Stokes admirable address upon
Tgnmas Paine. all the local, foreign, domes
tic, and Market news of the day, and a grey
variety of editorial and miscellaneous mat
ter. In clubs of live, our mammoth family
WEEKLY POST costs but one dollar per year
AT THE last regular meeting of Councils, a
member of the Third ward delegation, in the
common branch, presented an ordinance chang
ing the place of holding the election in the
second precinct, from Wylie to Grant street, at
Duffy's, where elections had been held for
many years. The resolution was passed unani
mously in both branches, as it was deemed but
courtesy to the Third ward to permit the rep
resentatives to fix the place for holding elec
tions at a place most central and convenient for
the voters of the ward. We are astonished to
find now that the Presidents of Councils re
fuse to sign the ordinance, and thereby evade
the action of Councils, making it a partizan
matter. We have nothing to say in behalf of
the argument offered, that the proprietor of
election place would lose the sale of much
'whisky on election day, if removed as Coun
have directed.
THE Gazettr is very uneasy at the pros
pea of losing the German vote at the coin
ing election. The editors of that paper, an,
so far as heard from the nominees upon th,
Republican ticket have taken the ground tha
it is all right to prevent the lour man from
riding in Passenger Can and buses cm
Sunday, but the rich may ride to church in
their carriages, and their Irish, German, or
American drivers must be compelled to mild
the horses outside, while the rich sinner,
are listening from their cushioned pews, to
the expounding of such texts as " Lore thy
neighbor as thyself." Here's consistency
for you.
A case of rather a singular character was
tried at the Mansfield county Court last week.
Some time ago a lady, the wife of the Postmas
ter at Salem, got on the cars of the C. C. C
R. R. at Crestlino, intending to go to Salem.
She had along with her a couple of small chil
dren. When the conductor came around for
tickets she offered him a ragged and soiled one
dollar bill, which he refused to take, saying it
was worthless. The lady said it was all the
money she had, and that it was good. She
was then told by the conductor that she must
get off when she got to Shelby, which she did
on the arrival of the train. At that station
she was advised by some gentlemen to get on
he train again,.it being only tive miles further
to Salem. This she did, and when the conduc
tor again came around, and foetid her without
other money than what was before offered, he
stopped the train and put the lady off. The
day was cold, and a dri'szllng rain had made
it quite muddy, and havinver half a mile, to
walk for shelter, the lady and he youngest
child took a severe cold, which after sickness
of over two months resulted in the death • the
latter. Suit was brought for damages, a ,
after a protracted trial, the jury returned a
verdict for plaintifi for $650.
A TREMENDOUSLY large bed of oysters, said
to be three or four miles square, was discover
ed off Huntingdon, Long Island, by a party of
fishermen from Norfolk, Ct. The value of the
?truer is said to be more than a million of dollars.
A hundred boats or more were, on Saturday,
busily at work diminishing the value of this
discovery as rapidly as hands could work. All
kinds of implements for the capture of these
strangers, which are said to vary in size from
large to gigantic, have been sent for from Fair
Haven, and other centres of the oyster trade.
THE. Odd Fellows had a grand procession in

THE STATE FAIR.
ST. LAWRENCE HOTEL. Philadelhia, }:=:,
September 28th, 10 o'clock P. If.
DEA.II. POST : yesterday but little of
intereeVhaa transpired in the City of Brother
ly Love. Theatreets are full and running over
with strarigeid, and more are arriving by every
train r among whom are many Pittaburghers.
I observed to-day, in addition to those men
tioned, It. P. 3,l.'Dowell, Esq., Dr. Murdoth
and lady, Ex-Postmaster Anderson, Samuel
.11'Kelvy, Esq., William 11. Smith, and other
gentlemen. But here, with such an immense
influx of people, there seems to be little ex
citement, and all pursue the even tenor of
their way, except the storekeepers, who move
somewhat more briskly than is their wont.
The fair grounds ftt Powelton present a more
annimated appearance to-day, the enclosure
having been well filled with visitors through-
out the day. The articles on exhibition have
been well arranged, and the departments are
generally well tilled, the stock pens more espe
cially. The display does not coine up to what
was expected by the officers or the citizens of
Philadelphia.
I eaw nothing remakable in the exhibition.

Our section is not very well represented at
the Fair. I saw some of 1101 Speer's phiws,
specimens of penmanship from the Iron City
College, and the Blank books of W. S. Haven,
which took the diploma at our own County
Fair. Each of these surpas-mil anything in for
same line exhibited, and will undoubtedly take
premiums. Our manufacturers should he more
enterprising, as their products will compete
with ally, and there is no better method of ad
vertising than by sending specimens to the.,
exhibitions.
At eleven o'clock this morning, a grand cav
alcade of all the horses entered was formed.
the carriages fell in behind, while saddle
horses in buggies, sulkies and wagons Caine
behind, making a lengthy procession, which
attracted all the speculators on the ground to
the track. After this display was over, trotting
horses entered the ring to compete for premi
ums, and almost the entire afternoon way occu
pied in testing their quality. The Competition
was lively and occasioned
which was not lessened by , e‘ eral r unitiv
in ono of which a driver narrowly ,cap.,l
being trampled to death.
In the afternoon. the stump extractors were
in operation for a time, but the grand ' , mire-
titian fur premiums does not come
to-morrow.
The 'team engines Wecetwoe, Southwark
and Good Intent were tested to-day, and work
ed admirably. Others will be tried on to-mor
row and Friday, after which the judge, will
award the premiums. There i.an lively °meta
lion for the first, a beautiful and sil

The chief attractions for to-morrow will Im

The Skull of Richelieu
It seems probable that a very curious and
u •resting affair will soon be brought before
the :•urts. It is known that the famous Car
dinal \flit:lichen was buried in the chapel of
the Sarbezine, where his tomb is still to be
seen. Dus.,ing the days of terror the infuria
ted mob tore open the Cardinals grave, in
common with thousands of others, dragged
forth the remains, separated the head from the
body, and carried it through thestreets stuck on
a pike. This head subsequently fell into the
Possession of a deputy of those days, who be
queathed it to his son. The latter, of course,
attaches a high value to the prize, obstinately
refusing to give it up to th., State, which
claims that the skull of the illustrious minister
of Louis XrIL should be placed among the
public relics of. the empire.
It was at first attempted to settle the controver
sy without appealing to the tribunals, lxitas the
present possessor'of the cardinal's head is deter
mined not to give it *without being absolute
ly forced to do so, it is said the authorities are
about to bring suit against hini to compel its
-restoration; and there seems very little doubt
that ho will lose his cherished head, at least.
When' Richelieu ruled Franee,.:and the weak
king; his nominal Master, ?With ; a rod of iron,
- holding the lives and fortunei of the most pow
erful in tha.hollow of his. hand, little did he
dream that the day would came when his skull
would be: carried through Paris on a pike,
treasured by* city deputy, and reclaimed by

splendid stock of Pianos, consisting of MX and 7
Octaves, in Plain and Carved Cases of the most Zdegant

ENLARGED NEW SCALE,
By which a much larger sound-board ix obtained, con•

grades of tone from piani.s...^inv, to fi-Li;•siino, with the
greatest ease.
CMCKEIIING & .'3 r' PIANOI are thus spoken of by the
best artistes.and. critics in our country:—_
TRALBERG saysi—l-They are beyond comparison the
best I have ever seen in the United States, and will corn:
pare favorably with any I have ever known."
GUSTAVE SATTER say:—"The opinion which I ex,
preeJsed throe yeare ago, has been more than confirmed
to me, by the continued one of them, sin That for W
inne and pure qualatu of boy, with nicety of articulation,
they are unequalled."
[From the National Inielligencer. Washington.) ,
"They can safely bear comparison with instruments

[From the New Orleans Picayune.l
"For excellence of material, elegance of finish, and
faithfulness of workmanship, and eil,ove all for volume
and variety, mellow sweetness, brilliancy and perm

[From the Family Journal.]
"The peculiar musical qualities belonging to the Chick

erful tone, freo from any wooden, noisy, loudness of
sound, so disagreeable to the sensitive musical ear.
They have also an easy, even and pleasant touch, and
will keep in tune better than any Pianos knows.
