M A WRITER in one of the New York flash story papers describes his heroine in the fol lowing paragraph, which we give as the best specimen of the Overpowering style we hare yet seen. Observe the sublime metaphor in troduced in the shape of an indolent eagle" : " Celestial love rounded out her luxurious form, the polished limbs which supported her frame wore goodness and truth, and her little feet and toes were a thousand charities to the poor. The flowers delighted to grow in her path that she might tread upon them, the Teph yrs lifted her •robe and played with her brown locks to attract her attention, and to win from her a smile if possible, while the indolent eagle swept near her cheek to catch her balmy breath and save himself the trouble of flying up to heaven in search of ambrosial nectre." That same - feminihe was observed walk ing through Fifth street, her •• luxurious form " rounded out with crinoline, and look ing like a "spread eagle." Her " her "charities,"were invisible find as for her " balmy breath," the less said on that ,object the better. We saw no one attempt to •• win a smile," but the lustre of her ebon cheek shone in rich contrast with the white of her eye. Why should not the ambrosial daughter of Africa wear silks and crinoline as well as her pale-faced sister! Who knows! POLICE.—The Zanesville papers contain a card from the Detective Police force employed at the State Fair, signed by Robert Hague, of Pittsburgh, Gallager and White, of Cleveland, S. T. Dewitt, of, Columbus, and Flannery, Bayzen and Watson, of Cincinnati, returning thanks to the Board of Agriculture, the offi cers of Zanesville and others for the courtesies -and. facilities extended to them in the discharge of their duties. There appears to have been less pocket picking on the fair grounds this year. than at any previous fair in the State, e fact which cannot but as satisfactory to the Board and the people as it is flattering to the force. CRUSHED TO DEATIL—About one o'clock•, on Thursday, a fatal accident occurred at Lip pincott's shovel factory, in the Eighth Ward. The name of the victim was John O'Brien. and he resided near the Court Rouse, in the Third Ward. It appears that he was at work at a water trough, when he was caught in the cogs of a revolving wheel, and crushed to death. The deceased was a sober and luaus. temp man. The scene, when his mangled remains Were brought to his residence, was most Leart-rending. Ire leaves a family to mourn his death. TUE BELMONT HOTEL.—Most Pittsburghers will recollect Mr. Hugh Bean, who formerly kept the Red Lion Hotel, on St. Clair street, then the National, on Water, and more re cently the Pavilion Hotel, at Rochester. Mr. Bean, wherever he was, always kept a first rate house, — and was much esteemed by those who enjoyed its hospitalities.
