Were the Democracy of Pennsylvania now going to throw away the prestige of the old Keystone State, to forget their glorious history in the past, and to wheel into the ranks of Abo litionism or modern Republicanism 9 If they did, it would be their own act, and not the act of their opponents. The Republicans had no chance of success, except in the dissensions of the Democracy, and while he would always stand up for principle, and never yield it for the sake -of harmony, yet, in order to preserve the prin ciples of the parry, he would surrender any personal prejudices and hostilities he inight hare. [Good and cheers.] The part of wis dom and patriotism was only to remember past quarrels in order to profit by them. Wherever there had been past issues that had died, all the asperity which they ever created should be buried with them, and we should only look ahead in the future, holding . forth the ban ner of Democracy, with our principles emblazoned on it in clear and ue lge, and RALLY NDER n TquH E iv ocal 0 MI A.N languaZ AVON OF THE PARTY. THE PITTSBURGH, FORT WAY N E AND CHIC AGO RAILROAD. A great public improvement which is de signed to facilitate the intercourse among a Population of several millions of people, and the direct effect of which is to develop , the resources and enhance the wealth of the people along its entire route, and especially of the great commercial cities at its termini, should, beyond doubt, receive the favorable consideration of the people , whom it so largely benefits. In regard..to the great western route between this city and Chica go. the majority of the people who reap its benefits fully appreciate their value. They are aware that the facilities and working lir rangements of the line under its present able management have been greatly increas ing and that no possible etlbrt is wanting. fully to aceommodate the business and traveling public, who use it. Those eflort s have largely increased the business of the road and are daily developing the resourc , of the, great North \Vest. It seems•surprising under such circum stances, when men of enlarged busines judgment everywhere, are awardlng to the management of the road jut praise for the great good which they have accomplished. that a leading public journal in the thriving city of Chicago, which reaps the lion's share obthcse benefits, should be found endeavor. , ., ing to find fault with the management, and if possible, to create a feeling of dissatisfac tion in the minds of the business and trad ing public in regard to it. The second semi-annual report of the company shows an increase in its earnings for the last six months, of upwards of $124,- 000. The machinery, stock and track of the company during this period have been largely improved, and its capacity for business is now equal to any demands upon it. In the face of this statement, showing most conclusively the prosperous condition of the affairs of the company under its pre, eat management the Chicago 'limo of Sept. 24th, with all the facts known to its editors, and with the evidence before its eyes of what the present direction have done in complet ing the road to Chicago and increasing its effective capacity for public service to a most wonderful degree, comes out in an ill natured and captious article of a character which we much regret to see in that excel lent and influential journal. It says, "what its capacity for business would be, were John Edgar Thomson president. def;7,1,,, there is no determining under its present arrange ment." The Times appears to be ignorant of the fact that Mr. Thomson is president de facto ; that all its movements, regulations and arrangements emenate from or receive the direct approval of his great controlling mind. He foresees the greatness of the road, and fully appreciates the " mighty re sources" at its command, and these, the Times says, aro "rusting, because they are not developed." The editors of the Times would seem to demand develop ment faster than the condition of cir cumstances will permit. Large under takings like a great railroad, are mot and cannot be brought to perfection in a single year, even with the aid of abundant pecu niary resources, and the most competent directive talent. As in the works of nature we have•first the blade, then the ear, and then the full corn in the ear, so improve ments of this description require time and labor for their full and perfectdevelopment. The present management of the-Pittsburgh and Chicago Road, with Mr. Thomson at their head, have proved themselves able bus bandmen of the productive resources entrust ed to their charge. Coming as it did into their hand in a time of almost unparalleled pecuniary depression in the financial world, and with a heavy mass of debt hanging over it, they have completed the connexion 11 - 4'y -to Chicago, increased all the running facili ties of the road, and increased its earnings ip a very large amount, and rendered it of such vast utility to the traveling and busi ness public that it is now admitted on all hands to be the best route between the East and West. The Times pays a poor compli ment to the energy, judgment, and admin tratiyeZability of Mr. Thomson in its flings at the superintendents, 'subordinates, and conductors of the road. It has been one of ,- the most remarkable characteristics of Mr. ' ; Tlionason's Railroad management, that his judgment , of men and their capacity, has been such that those who are required to ! perform the thousand duties of carrying out the arrangements. and regulations -of !the - 14:04.4 414.0,1ctis cl,:targe have invariable.been men of peculiar adaptedness to the pos t- I, The GRDNER, bons in which they have been placed. : Such ' The New England Sou A p Man, still pursues the i s the part in regard to thqittsburg: h • And l even tenor of his way most - successfully. It is the laxity of discipline, not its rigid and careful enforcement, of which the public have a right to complain. All our railroad accidents spring from this laxity of disci pline so much desired by our Chicagolriend, and it is from this cause that so many of our railroads prove unremunerative to stock holders and almost useless to the public. It is by this " rigid officiousness, traceable in high quarters," that the operating expenses of the whole road have been paid regularly every month since the present management took the reins, but also, the sum of j:11'26,- 906 16 of the debt._,preyiously contracted, discharged, and not a dollar of debt for labor or materials contracted since the lirst of August, lt45S, . The insinuation that there is something which the Directors ought to Mid out, emanates, not from a knowledge of :my fact or condition of things of which the the public do, or ought to complain, but from a misapprehension of the character of some few of the gentlemen connected with ,the management of the road. Even had , its suppositious causes of comphint by the public been well grounded, the article of our Chicago cotemislrary is all nu niir one. THE Gazette, driven to the wall, pretends to hold THE POST responsible fur the opinions of its correspondents. We have said so repeat edly, so plainly, and so often, that :when we published communications, we were in no wi,e to be considered as endorsing the sentiment advanced by our correspondents, that the Gazette must have been utterly at a 1099 for arguments, or it would not have descended to se mean a shift to sustain itself iu its mendacious attempt to misrepresent us. Whether he will turn the tibias now remains to be seer.. } Dear Bait : I am rejoiced to see that THE Posr has taken strong and open ground in favor of the nomination , of Hon. Stephen A. Douglas by the Charleston Convention.— Such a man I think altogether consistent with the best interests of the Democratic party of the nation; and, as manifesting a degree of political sagacity which I would be glad to see generally imitated by the Democratic press of the country. 1 am strongly inclined to the opinion of TILE POST, that Mr. Douglas is the only Democrat who can he elected in 1860. With him as our candidate, success would be cer tain—with almost any one else, Ifear the chances would be largely against us. The Democracy of Greene county, I um confident, are almost en moss,. for the nomination of the " Little I Giant, - who so gloriously triumphed in DB -11 nob:, over such fearful odds. I know a Tulin ber of sterling Democrats who warmly differed I from him in the unfortunate Kansas ditlieub ties, but who now, that thatquestion is no longer in issue, tire just as warmly in favor of his nomination—arguing, and most justly too— that he is the only man who can certainly save the party and the country in 1860. With Douglas as 'the Democratic nominee, the bat teries of the Opposition would be most effect ually spiked by their own declarations. But enough on this point at present. On Thursday last, Hon. Richardson 1. NV r i g ht, Our iv, .rth y candidate for Auditor General, paid our county a flying visit in com pany with our highly es-teemed and very pop ular Senator, Hon. G. \V. Miller, of Wash ington. Mr. Wright, .if eourse, had few per sonal acquai ntanees in our county, but he met a warm welcome from such of our Democrats as had the pleasure of making his a l ,ptHilitttllCl , , i while front his great urbanity of manner and frank, open, manly conversation, he left u most happy impr e ssion on the minds of those 1 1 with whom he met. Our friends regretted very much that it was not in Mr. Wright:s.power to remain with us during . our court next week. However, as usual, Greene may be expected to do her duty on the second Tuesday of October, and if the remainder of the State will do a well, the State ticket will be elevated by an ON Or w h e inilikg majority. Z'' , onte portions of our county have been vis ited by light trots within the past fortnight : but 1 believe I:0 ,eriou, damage ties yet been done to either the corn or buckwheat crops. Should the troll delay its canting (Ong enough our county will yield buckwheat enough to -apply half the State. Our corn crops, though touch injured by the droutli, will be far greater than was anticipated some weeks since.
