If he or those de pendant upon him starve, that is his own look out. At ail events, it is inconsistent with all -. our ideas of liberty that one set of men should be compelled to work for another under terms !.. nnd-.conditions to which both parties cannot - agree. The coal diggers of this vicinity have for -• some weeks been on a strike, to compel the employers to weigh each separate load of coal as it comes from the pits. The coal proprie• -tors say that the expense and loss consequent `• upori Such-a proceeding would be so great that it is utterly impossible for them to grant the . .,.demands•of the miners. Both parties have re -:, • solved that they are right, and each is deter mined to adhere to his own side of the ques tion. The miners have turned out and refused •to work. - This they have a perfect right to do. Their refusal to work, is their own busi ness, affecting primarily only themselves and families. But strikes, although they may be commenced with a determination to defend the rights of one party without interfering with - those of another, usually result in collisions of • an unlawful, and frequently of an outrageous • character. Such, ive regret to say, has been the result in one instance of the present coal diggers' strike. Forgetting that the right to !..quit work themselves did not carry with it the right to interfere in the slightest - degree with others who might choose or be compelled by • their necessities to work, a party of diggers "on the strike," attacked a party who were at work at Port Perry, on Vonday, and a riot ensued. A few days since, Messrs. J. Corry & Ce., coal merchants, came to an understanding with their men, that if their wagons were branded they would waive their claims to the scales, and resdine work. On Monday, in pur suance of . this arrangement, a man was brought from the city to brand the cars, and thirty-live of the men feeling satisfied with the concession, resumed work. During the day, the striking miners held a meeting in the neighborhood, at which the usual speeches were made and resolutions passed. One of the ij ,ealuits 'indulged in e harrangue of an in . et enaterycharacter, irk which tile men who L i. . resumed work in Corry &, Co.'s pit were denounced, and their course submitted to the severest censure. This excited those who heard it, and, acting under the impulse and excite ', ,- ment of the moment; some two hundred of the men proCeeded to Corry & Co.'s pit, and as sailing the men as they came out from work, a terrible sc - ene followed. The parties attacked ,defended themselves with vigor, and being joined by Mr. Corry and others from the ad .. - joining works, they, in the end, put their as sailants to flight, not, however, till ono of their number was almost murdered, and several others dangerously injured. ' . ' On Tuesday Mr. Corry cane to the city and made information before the Mayer charging - Conrad Speidal, F. Martin, Caspar Raymond, . ! . N. Hartman, W. Sinedigger, G. Newton and _G. ' It is to be hoped that prompt measures in this instance may be successful in preventing - the - recurrence of - similar outrages in future, notonly among the miners at present on the strike, but among all other classes of workmen who may claim the right to interfere with the free action of others. • - , The officers returned from Port Perry last night, without having succeeded in making tiny arrests. WHO STOLE THE BILL?—The question of hew and after what manner the bill pled in the rOthonotary's- once in the case of James S. Craft' against the' 'ittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad Company was abstracted from the office, isyet as unsettled as that celebrated in quiry " Who struck Billy Patterson 7" On Friday, Alderman Steele was engaged ip taking depositions, in order lo ascertain, if possible, w h o had taken the paper. G. P. If.amilton, Esq., Mr. Barton, and others interested in the case, were present, but the reporters were ex cluded, the Alderman, very properly, deeming it his duty to return the result of his investi gations to Court before making it public. The public must, therefore, wait on the tender hooka of expectation until next Saturday. The appropriation tbr cleaning and repairing streets having been exhausted, the Street Cow missioners have notified-Councils through the Street Committee that they aro unable to do any more work for want of means. Resolu tions to add to the street appropriations from the contingent fund and water fund have heen offered and rejected, as thee• funds have enough to provide for to take care of the in terests for which they were originally designed and appropriate, and as the city has no extra funds which it can appropriate, we see no way for the citizens to get along, except to raise a subscription to clean the streets, or else turn up their pantaloons and gracefully shorten their crinoline, and try the virtue of wading. Thick shoes and rubbers will be at a premium before January. TII E DIAMOND MARKET DOL'sF- 4 .4 will proba bly be surrendered to the city early in the month of October by the Diamond Market House Association. The public owe a debt of gratitude to the liberal gentlemen, who, with out a dollar of profit to themselves beyond six per rent. interest upon the money which they actually advanced, have constructed and paid fur, from the revenues, these tine and commo dious buildings. Tho city has from the first received a rent of $4,500 per annum, and so capitally has the business of the Association been managed:that the buildings now revert to the city clear of debt, but are yielding an annual income of nearly $20,000. It behooves Councils to see to it, that hereafter the affair. of the Market are manage 4 with the game caution, prudence and profit hereafter that they have been heretofore. Tice Pennsylvania Salt Manulactur ing Com pany, whose office is at No. 390 Penn street, bore away, at the National Fair at Chicago, the first premium for the best quality of salt for the purpose of packing meat. The articles manufactured by this company have for years maintained a capital reputation in all the western markets for their excellence. Their celebrated concentrated lye is an article which has no superior in its class, either for effective utility or cheapness. Specimens of it %sere exhibited at the fair, and attracted much atten tion, but no premium had been offered for ar ticles-of this description. PETTY OFFENSES.—There were nothing but common cases before the magistrates yesterday. Alderman Rogers disposed of a few hard caste. Justice of Beeblei township, com mitted Henry Gardner to prison, charged with assault and battery on John Davis. Jernima Mason and Mary Ann Shinn made cross infor.nation against each other before Al derman Lewis. Both were held to bail. Timothy Cadman, one of the coal diggers now on-is strike, made an information against John O'Neill, a pit owner, for assault and bat tery, The parties resble see wiles above ]L'Hcesport. CIEZSZOM STABBING AFFAIR.—Two boys, named Hen ry Ziringer and John Root, got into a difficul ty in the Third ward, Allegheny, on Saturday, during which the latter drew a knife on the former, and stabbed him in the bark, the blade penetrating the cavity of the chest, and pass ing with an inch of the heart. Root fled after the perpetration of the crime, and has not yet been arrested. Ziringer was conveyed to his father's house, and is still in a critical condi tion. The offender is but fifteen years of agn, and the son of a laborer residing on First street. SUNDAY TRAVEL.—It Is announced that the Mayor has determined to put a stop to the running of cars on Sunday, upon the passen ger railroads.' We greatly regret this. The public necessity demands that they should run on this as on other days. We hope that at the approaching session of the Legislature, the Sunday law may bo so modified as t' meet the demands of public opinion, in regard to the travel upon passenger railways in cities. AN OUTRAGIC.-SOMO malicious villain has defaced and torn down the assessment list which had been posted according to law at the second precinct of the Third ward. If the person who committed this outrage can ho as certained, he should bo prosecuted and punished to tho extent of the law. WEDNESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 28, 1859. A inicovery of Great Importance to Iron Mr. Jesse Burroughs, a citizen of Pennsyl vania, announces the discovery of a new method of purifying coal and ores, which is of great importance to those engaged in any of the branches of iron manufacture. He claims that be bas discovered a process by which coal will be made to produce more heat than four times the amount of coke, and at the same time be thoroughly desulphurized and purified of all foreign ingredients which aro detrimental to iron in the process of its manufacture. Prac tical eYperiment alone can demonstrate satis factorily the value of this discovery. Mr. Bur roughs;has full confidence in it, and is prepared to submit his process to the test of practical use. The cost of applying the process is very trifling; and it can be done in any kind of fur naces. It is a most Important discovery to the whole iron trade if, on fair trial, it proves to be what it is represented. The proprietor and his agent are now in the city, at the St. CCsir Hotel, prepared to sell rights to use it, and cer tainly our fellow-citizens interested in the iron business will not neglect thoroughly to test a matter of so great importance to their inter ests. We refer to Mr. Burrough's card in our advertising columns. SALES of stocks last evening by P.
