Yesterday afternoon Independent Detective Gallagher arrested n young man calling him self G. W. Bennett for stealing a coat and sun dry other articles from the American Hotel. The coat was found in his possession, and a clear ease made against him. A memorandum book evidently belonging to Mr. G. F. Tindal, the ef ficient and popular Assistant Superintendent of the Buffalo & Erie Railroad at Dunkirk. Mr. 'l'. was telegraphed to and arrived hero this morning in company with Cul. Tyler of the Dunkirk Police. Thu book was readily identi fied. It contained, besides the names of the men in Mr. Ti ndal's employ, seine twenty passes on the Buffalo & Erie and several Western Roads and $1:8 in bank bills. The money was gone. Some of the passes had been filled out by the confidence man and he had, according to his own statement, rode pretty much all over the Western portion of our glorious Republic on them. Blank passes on the Cincinnati & Marietta, and other roads which had been given to Mr. Tilden as marks of fraternal courtesy by other Superintendents, had been filled out by the confidence man. Some of the passes on the B. & E. were filled out and endorsed on their backs with the forged signa ture of Mr. Tilden. In these passes the confi dence man culled himself Wm. Lawler." Ho also wrote a letter, which showed that the most romantic friendship existed between him self and Mr. Tilffim duly signing it with Mr. Tilden's name. Mr. T. of course pronounced this a forgery at once. The object of this letter was to enable Bennett atius Lawler to fleece other railroad gentlemen. The writing was a bungling imitation of Mr. Tilden's. The manner in which Bennett alias Lawler got hold of Mr. T.'s memorandum book is this: About a week ago he called on Mr. T. at his office in Buffalo and told him he was a railroad man and Mason. He had documents (doubtless forgeries) showing that he had been or then was, an emyloyee of the Pittsburgh & Chicago Railroad. Mr. T. gave him a pass. His memorandum book was lying on a table in the office, and in some way Lawler managed to steal it. It was not missed before ho left Dunkirk. He also requested permission to write a letter which was courteously granted. He used one of Mr. Tilden's letter-heads 'and forged the above -mentioned letter in that gentl emaWs (Alice ! That may not be a One - specimen of " cheek." but we are inclined to the opinion that it is. Bennett alias Lawler undertook to ex plain the matter, but made a decided failure. Among other things, ho said he took the book by mistake and was intending to return it. -This, as well as his other statements, were very properly referred to the marines. The book was very valuable to Mr. Tilden. It is notde fermined whether Lawler will be taken to Now York or not. He will be tried hero first for petit larceny, at any rate.—Cleveland Plain dealer. llon.
