M Mistakes of the Press The following, from the Cleveland Pbz in dealer, will apply so well here, that we cannot refrain from compying it entire: Those who are most loth to give reporters items, are the first to growl at " mistakes." Those who, having items of interest., take spe chil pains to avoid reporters—and this class is by no means small—swear the loudest at what they are pleased to call the stupidity of -" the papers." - Reporters mean to bo fair. They have no object in being otherwise. They seek the truth. Like Mr. Thos. Grudgrind, what they want facts." And if persons with hold facts from reporters, causing thein' to write items on the strength of flying rumor. they have no right to complain of errors. The: best way, gents, when you have an item, is to unbosom yourself to the reporters at once. But if you won't do this, don't flatter your selves that you can trouble them by swearing at them. They have skins like rhinoceroses, and can stand a great deal. A word to you, Mr. Public Man. You find it very convenient to use us, but you seldom giCe us a chance to use you. When we know you have any news, and we respectfully ask you fir it, you are quite too apt to put on airs. and give us the frigid shoulder. But you still expect. us to say, when you are delivered of a stupid speech before any public meeting, that it was "able and eloquent." Alas ! how often ;ve (reporters is general) perjure ourselves In this way. How well we know that you are an arrant humbug—that the interior of your thick head was never astonished by an origi nal idea—that not a particle of the patriotism you do so trippingly talk about, ever flashed across the burnished brass of you soul ! Yet we galvanize you ; we call you able and elo quent; we call your worn-out, empty worth " a speech," And are very careful not to omit the "applause" and " laughter." Why do we do it? Don't ask us. We don't know. This is one of the points upon which we are not very clear. It makes us sick to think of it. If any reporter knows, let him speak, and the "ears of the Wampanoag shall be open to his words." Reporters do not expect to please every body. The newspaper writer who undertakes to do so is an eminently eligible candidate for some quiet Asylum for the hopelessly There are such men, however--a few of them— old women of the male gender, who daintily hoist their petticoats, straddle noiselessly into the newspaperial field, and walk, on tip-toe, over all the gobbles, knolls and " bad places.'' They retire soon. No; sensible reporters do not expect to please every body, but it, is wrong to swear at them without proper cause. The best way for reporters is to earnestly endeavor to perforrh the duties of their calling well, and pay no more attention to the growling of the thin skinned and thick-headed than the whistling of the winds. THE COAL MINERS Or WESTMOILELAND.,-- The miners of the Westmorland Coal Works, at Irwin's Station, Spring Hill, Larimer's Station, and Bald Eagle, have struck for the scales. They talk about resuming, shortly, but are on the stand, and have an association. One dollar is paid as initiation, and fifteen cents per month thereafter, the proceeds to be applied to those miners who may be injured while at work. The above mines belong to the West moreland Coal Company. The Superintendent of the Works, Mr. Crothers, has promised to put up the scales. The men are undecided—some want to go to work, others will not till the scales are put up. RUN OVER BY A 11.03 R CARRIAGE.—On Thursday evening, as the Allegheny hose car raigovvas running up Webster street, daring anrilarm of fire, it knocked down and runt over Mr. ',Jeremiah Donovan, injuring hint severely. The Neptune engine was being drawn up the street. and in order to pass, the hose company was forced to take the sidewalk. Just at this moment Mr. D. stepped out of his doer, just above Seventh street, and was run over as stated. One of the wheels passed over his breast, breaking his watch to pieces, and the other over his legs. He was picked up and carried into the house, but, we learn, escaped having any of his bones broken. THE NEW CASTLE RACES.—The races over the New Castle Park were very well attended, and of more than usual interest. Felix Laf ferty took the premium for pacers with "Ili ley,", but not until seven heats had been won. The hundred dollar premium was also taken by Felix with "Harry Neil," who made an awful example of "Kennebec," and won pretty much as he liked in three straight heats.
