JACOB MTOLI The painful announcement of the death of one of our most worthy and upright cit zebs fallS to our lot to-day. Mr. M'Collister died very suddenly at his residence, of pleu risy, on Tuesday morning at five o'clock. Mr. M'Collister was ill but a few days, and the fatal termination of his sickness was r,t anticipated until a short period before hi death. On Tuesday night of last week, in his capacity of President of the Douglas Club of Allegheny county, he took a prom inent part in the reception of Mr. Doug e , in this city. Then he was full of life and excitement, and before a week-had elapsed he was dead. Mr. WCollister was a true man in thebest sense of the term. He poss.sed sound common sense, prudence and foresight in business matters, and a heart full of kind neas:to his fellow-men. All were his friends, and knew not what it was to have an enemy. His manners were quiet and tin- OFFirsitind in public affairs he was rath er inclined to hold back than push himself fprtrAcl; He was a most valuable Mid.use ful citizen, and, as member of councils, school direCter, has served the public faithf4r:exid well. His occupation was that of a . tobacconist, and he devoted hi , industry to his business. At the same time he had a well informed mind, and kept him a,l.VWste;d 'upon all the current topics of the day. KNOIVN6THINGISIVI AND REPUB The Germans of New Tork State aro ask why the "Republican " Convention, which lately met at Syracuse, placed upon their Slat,• ticket an ardent Know Nothing (Davies,) and why it did not take some action in opposition to the infarnous•exeise law, and why it did not denounce the Massachusetts two year amend ment law, so ungenerously aimed at foreigners! These are pertinent questions and easily ans wered: P,14,1)04 --,approves of the Excise law he cause tt was their friends in the Legislatur , who passed it ! They put Judge Davies on the ticket, and did hot denounce the infamous Mass achuiette two year amendment law, simply be cause they were all tainted with Know Noth inglsrn and hate the foreigners. Had they deemed it politic, the Convention would have gone as far as the best "American" thent'all in adopting Know Nothing princi ples. ; I FFieyand left undone just enough to show where their hearts were, but not quite: enough to satisfy the other wing of the "(IP : - position." Careizarsa 3 Sons' Puxos are thus spoken of by the best artistes and eritice 10 our country:— TIIALBEE.O says--" They are beyond comparison the best I have ever seen in the United states, and will com pare favorably with any I have ever known." GUSTAVE HATTER say:—",The opinion which I ex pressed three yeare ago, has been more than confirmed to me, by the continued use of them, yin That for ',sl ums and pure quality of tune, with nicety of articulation, they are unequalled.' [From the National Intelligencer, Washington.] "They can safely bear comparison with instruments from any part of the world, in point of tone, strength and elasticity of touch." [From the New Orleans Picayune.] " For excellence of material, .elegance of finish, and faithfulness of workmanship, and above all for volume and variety, mellow Sweetness, brilliancy and perma nence of tone, they are unequalled." [From the . Family Journal.] ''The peculiar musical qualities belonging to tho Chick ering instruments, are a full, musical, nob and pow erful tone, free from any wooden, noisy, loudness of sound, so disagreeable to the sensitive musical ear. They have also en easy, even and pleasant touch, and will keep ALL tune better than any Pianos known. The public are invited to call and examine these splendid instruments, which are sold at Factory Prices and Warranted. JOHN H. MELLOR, aug2s.daw MADAME APOLLINE TETEDOUX!
