THE GUNNINO SEASON.—As many of our
Sportuten are under the impression that the
gunning sesson commenced on the first of Sep
tember, and as the idea might lead many per
sons into trouble, subjecting them to a floe of
five dollars and costs, for a little indulgence in
the sport of shooting birth, we copy the act
passed last winter for the protection of game,
and if any of our readers offend in this wico
they will sin against the light:
1. From June first to September first of each
and every year hereafter, it shall be unlawful
for any person or persons to shoot, kill, trap or
destroy rail birds or reed birds, under the penal
sum of live dollars, with costs of prosecution.
for each and every offence; to be sued for and
recovered before any magistrate in the county
in which the offence was committed, one-ball
of the penalty for the use of the informer, who
shall be a competent witneis, the other half for
the use of the poor in the county in which the
offence was committed.
2. No person shall kill or otherwise ds:troy
any pheasant between the first day of February
and the first day of August, or any woodcock
between the first day of February and the
fourth day of July, or any partridge or rabbit
between the first day of February and the first
day of October in the present year, and in each
and every year thereafter, under the penalty of
five dollars for each and every offence, and that
the second section of the act to which this is a
supplement, be and the same is hereby re
pealed.
FOR THE LAPIEs-tHE CHAMELEON SHOE.
—ln Paris, the fashion , for decorating
slippers either by needlework, by figured pat
terns on the leather, or other material. or by
the insertion of colored silk or satin, old as it
is, has just hewn materially improved upon
A dealer in London lies contrived a method of
changing the pieces of 'colored satin as often
as the wearer desires, without in any way in
juring the slipper. lie makes a little pocket
in the upper part of the slipper, under the
perforations of the pattern, into which is placed
the piece of colored satin to be worn. Whan
the wearer wishes to change the color, nothing
is easier than to withdraw one piece and in
sert another. A dozen pieces of satin,on stiff
linings, of various colors and shades are sold
with the slippers. Tasteful bows and ribbons
and buckles may be also attached to the shoe
by a simple contrivance, and as easily rt.
moved. This novelty has : received the name
of the chameleon shoo.
CHAaoi or As , A I.T To K ILL. --Charle ,
Michaels, proprietor of Schiller Ball, onlland
Street, filed an affidavit before Mayor Weaver
yesterday. charging, two brothers, James and
William Flinn, with assault and battery with
intent to kill, in attacking him, on Monday
evening, at the corner of Hand and Liberty
streets, and beating him badly with a handy
billy." It is stated that James Flinn wa=
found by Micheels in company with his wit's..
under suspicious circumstances, and that Mich
aels, undertaking to chastise him, got the worst
of it. Both the Flinns were arrested and held
to bail to answer at. Court. Michaels was ale.
bound in one hundred dollars to appear as a
witness.
CA.PTIETRE OF AN ALLEGISD TIILEF.—On the
night of the 24th December of last year the
store of M'Laren & West, Columbiana, was
entered and robbed of some two hundred dol
lars' worth of dry goods. Efforts were made
to catch the thieves but without success, though
Mr. West expended much time and money in
enffeavoring to secure them. Yesterday
West., now residing in this city, received a let
ter, announcing the arrest of one of the sup
fosed parties, a man named Lee, who was
picked up at Davenport, lowa, for passing
counterfeit money. He was taken to'Ravennii,
and will be prosecuted for the larceny. The
chain of circumstantial evidence against him
is said to be strong.
Aeocto TH EATRK.—The •Daughter of the
Regiment" was performed at the Apollo last
PVelling by the Cooper Opera Troupe, to
small audiencd, we regret to say, for the repro.
sensation was worthy of a full house, Miss
Milner, as Marie, surpassed herself:oo;Ru
dolphsen, wns very happy, and M.T. Bowler
did admirably. This evening, that beautiful
op 're by Balfe, the "Bohemian Girl," will be
produced, Miss Milner as Arline. She created
.qUite a sensation in that part during the first
engagement, of that troupe, and, a good audi
ence should greet its repetition to-night. Let
.our music lovers attend, as it is seldom such a
treat is offered.
Fiat IN BUTLER.—On Saturday evening, a
frame building on the corner of Main and jet-
Parson streets, Butler, owned by the M'Sbe

wagon maker's shop on the mini: lot Was Laleii

the Richange building, during the summer, had

intended to use in rebuilding, all of which' was
destroyed. The loss is about 52,500, with no
insurance. The lire is supposed to be the work
of an incendiary.

Professor Comstock, who has been lecturing
in this vicinity for some time on the above
subject, is convincing all who hear him that
there is much to be learned in the cultivation of
the earth. Wherever he has been he has met
with groat success, and large classes attend his
disclosures. We learn that Mr. Samuel Slink),
of Beaver county, who heard the Professor lec
ture at Iron City College on the 20th, returned
to his farm, and on the 22d applied the knoWl
edge, gaihed at the tlhiclosure to a portion of a
field of potatoes, which on examination, on
the lst instant, he found to yield double the
quantity of potatoes that the rest of the field
did.
Prof. Comstock has met with much opposi

tlemen was present at the lecture, who remark

him.

Western Pennsylvania on receiving notice that
a class of dfty persons has been formed, at two

THE WE...MM.—The nights and mornings
are getting decidedly cool, and give us a little
idea of October weather. Autumn has already
begun to breathe upon us, and the trees of the
grove and the forest will soon be putting on
their russet and fading into the "sere and yel
low leaf," and we soon shall realize the time
and scenes so beautifully described by the Ooet

Vegetable Substitute for Calomel

BRA.NrigTR'S VEGETABLE UNIVERSAL PILLS
by restoring the bowels to their original daily and note
rut action, give strength to the stomach. purify the blood
re-establish the healthy condition of the digestive or
gnus, and thus cure dyspepsia, colds, coughs, rheuma
usms, dropsies, and sickness generally, whether chronic
or recent. The celebrated Abernathy says Alter
having cured the derangement of the bowels, debility
and all diseases genentlly disappear of their own anent,
even In a short time." The experience of ft century has
established the worth of these Pills beyond dispute, as a
Purgative anti-bilious medicine; and their use by up
wards of 4,000 eonscientious physicians, and by over a
million of families, shows that they are supplying one of
the wants of humanity, and are in advance of medical
science. The 'above pills, although purely vegetable, are
now known and used as a substitute for calomel (He
drargovi C'hforidion ate,) producing all its aLtemtiVe
and other indications, with none of its disorganizing ef
fects upon the solids—often erippling'for life—or its dis
tressing action upon the teeth and gums. The prepared

Lion Pills—isa substitute for blue-pill (Pilules Hydraroye)
possessing the peculiar action on the secreting organs,
of that preparation from mercury, but none of Its graj
rating or other injurious etleets. Those who have used
them, as a bleispillaufertitutc or otherwise, award to them
the highest praise. They come nearer tot concentrated
Essence of Life than anything yet made, Is the way of
medicine, by man. A single pill given daily, when all
hope has fled., has often restored health. sin feet they
supply an organic principle to the blood, alwaya wanting
in extreme cases of sickness. Old people have the se
cretions of early youth restored by the Life Addition
