PITTSBUaR,GII POST.
A Clear Case of Conhrlence
People generally regard a .raidemid. cempartY
as a legitimate object for swindliug,, and feel
just th stifildr.sf (11'2:Tf . e of guilt if' ey can, by
no matter what means,-get a tree ride. A rare
exception to this rule has lust been experienced
by Superintendent Nottingham, of the Cleve
land and Erie Railroad- A few days ainec he
received a letter, =rued by David C. G. Field,
inclosing a one-dollar bill, and in which the
writer states that a year ago last -May be took
passage at Geneva, Ohio, for Erie, Pennsylva
nia, and, being very short of funds, seated him
self in a second-class car. As there were no
other passengers in that ear, the conductor did
not happen to discover the single traveler, and
he rode to Erie free. As he was nearly "strap
ped," having but little over one dollar with
which to travel live or six hundred miles, .11r.
Field regarded this oversight of the conductor
as a streak of good luck, and went on his way
rejoicing. Recently, however, his finances
have improved, and inclosed to the Superin
tendfint a cUrfent dollar to pay for' his ride !
We do not think the ease has a parallel in rail
road experience.—Cincinnati Empriter.
Slimy Chicken Thieve,:
A correspondent of the Fredericksburg (Va.)
Herald, writing
from Madison county, says
•' A lady hearing an alarm in her hen house,
proceeded to ascertain the cause, and found a
Very large black snake. She sent immediate
ly for her husband, who shot its head off, and
upon examination found it contained three
eggs, seven chickens, and had swallowed a hen
as far as the A few days after another
was killed in the same place, and its body con
tained fifteen eggs.
