The rapid progress of the middle region of our continent, to which over-peoided Eu rope is sending millions of honest and in dustrious people, is indeed most wonderful. The growth of the largest cities of the At lantic is nothing in comparison with the quaint strides of our Western cities. In this respect they eclipse New York the most prosperous of all the Atlantic citteii. The population of New York and Brook lyn is note live times as great 11,- it 'was in 1.530, while that of many of the large citise of the We•t. is twenty times gr, , ater than in There tu•e severid of our Western cities, whose increase seems to defy calcula tion and comparison. The population of I'hicago for instance in while in 1N5‘,1 it was In IN:itt the population of st. Lotti was six thousand, whilst at the present t it has a population of and is the - rreat central commercial Metropolis of the country. In 1 s.iu Con•iii nati had a population of St•id.S.odo estimated at. :.! , ••2.3o,iukt. In the same time. Boston ha, gone up from eighty thousand. to two hundred thou-and, and Bditimore from eighty-three to two hundred a n d thousand inhabitants. but in the W(•,st tit would be considered very slow progress. In De Bow's Itericw for AtigiFt. they, . a long and interesting article on this subj... :. containing carefully prepartid statistical ta bles of the comparative growth of the prin cipal cities of the country. In this article, we have the growth tot thirty years. since I'o4 of five of the larg oq Atlantic cities, with the live largest 'cities of the plain." 11.• the cities Of the West are called, compared. The population of the five Atlantic cities tea io tiv,e-hundr. , dandninety-ninethowlnd and in 15(59, two million three hundred and eighty thousand, an increase of lit, time whilst the aggregate population of the rite leading Western gibe= was in ItiStl,,amlg nin.• ty-eight thousand, an I their aggregater,,p, lationjn 15 ill, eight hundred and eighty thousand, or an in,rraSe of nin.• time Su, in ociniparing ton of tlio next I.irgo,t cities of ice lina that Ow A t Lintic cities have four time, a, Ifirg4• a pop ulation as in 1:•4311, ichiht the NN't,t,rit have, in t 1..• -An', period ~r ten-fold. Turning from the great seaboard cities ! and those on large streams, to cities in the I interior and bordering on the lake , , ‘ve find tho diffierence in their increase equal ly striking. From full and elaborate tabular state ments of the growth of the interior cities trig the navigable waters of the MissiNsippi, and affluents, %ve find (limit their population eleven and a half times as great as in This increase, however, falls far lie- Mud the astonishing progress of the cities which have been built up hy the commerce of the lakes. Taking, by way of illn-(ration, the popu lation of twenty of the interior river cities in 1530. we find their aggregate population to have been sl,lOl l , whilst their present population is 111-I,lllkt. The aggregate popu lation of twenty of the principal lake trifles in was 32,40 S now it is 164,040:, _ 11,•re we have cities 1,..0,1!/-tAne t h ane more populous than they were in 1830, whilst the most prosperous Atlantic cities have only in creased five-fold in population. Here we have the lake cities increasing with more than double the rapidity of the river cities, and with more than five limes that ,ir the Atlantic cities. In view of these startling facts, the au thor of the article in question concludes that New York cannot, continue to hold that position of overwhelming commercial ,supe riority which she now possesses. The cen tral point of population is moving steadily W,-stwitrd. Mull will be the future centre of population of this vast republic is a most interesting question. Five years ago, an able in vestii:ation naS made by Thomas M. cooley, Gsa l ., Professor in the University of Michigan, to ascertain where, the centre of population or the United States and Canadas was at that time. 'rm, result showed it to be very near Pittsburgh. It is generally conceded that this centre travels in a direction about 'West by North, at the rate of about seven miles a year.— , Our internal commerce is about ten times greater titan our foreign commerce, and it is constantly increasing. This will be the chief agency in building the future, and permanent capital city of the continent. The wealth and industrial power of the na tion, however, does not more West ,so fast' as the population. The larger proportion of the industrial power, of necessity re mains in the older States, but the centre poWer of the nation, numerical, political, economical, and social, is steadily ad vancing towards the great Western valley. Somewhere in its broad interior, it will soon er or later find'a resting, place. The East may struggle for the supremacy, but that the - Tesritrilsk finally conquer, is as inevi table:as the movement of the earth 'upon its axis. Mr; De'Bow, ,his review, gives _us a. great variety of statistics of production and commercial statistics ip.c9tifirmation of this, praitimi.
