pared with seine of the cities of the west we
are esteemed a slow coach.
The rapid progress of the middle region
of our continent, to which over-peoided Eu
rope is sending millions of honest and in
dustrious people, is indeed most wonderful.
The growth of the largest cities of the At
lantic is nothing in comparison with the
quaint strides of our Western cities. In
this respect they eclipse New York the most
prosperous of all the Atlantic citteii.

ments of the growth of the interior cities
trig the navigable waters of the MissiNsippi,

Taking, by way of illn-(ration, the popu
lation of twenty of the interior river cities
in 1530. we find their aggregate population

In view of these startling facts, the au
thor of the article in question concludes
that New York cannot, continue to hold that
position of overwhelming commercial

riority which she now possesses. The cen
tral point of population is moving steadily
W,-stwitrd. Mull will be the future centre
of population of this vast republic is a most
interesting question.
Five years ago, an able in vestii:ation naS
made by Thomas M. cooley, Gsa l ., Professor
in the University of Michigan, to ascertain
where, the centre of population or the United
States and Canadas was at that time. 'rm,
result showed it to be very near Pittsburgh.
It is generally conceded that this centre
travels in a direction about 'West by North,
at the rate of about seven miles a year.—
, Our internal commerce is about ten times
greater titan our foreign commerce, and it
is constantly increasing. This will be the
chief agency in building the future, and
permanent capital city of the continent.
The wealth and industrial power of the na
tion, however, does not more West ,so fast'
as the population. The larger proportion
of the industrial power, of necessity re
mains in the older States, but the centre
poWer of the nation, numerical, political,
economical, and social, is steadily ad
vancing towards the great Western valley.
Somewhere in its broad interior, it will soon
er or later find'a resting, place. The East
may struggle for the supremacy, but that
the - Tesritrilsk finally conquer, is as inevi
table:as the movement of the earth 'upon its
axis.
