On Wednesday afternoon, about half-past four o'clock, a man named John Hamilton, a brat moan in the employ of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad Company, met his death under the following circum stances: Ile was engaged in making up a train of freight cars near the outer depot. The train was standing, on a side track, and an engine had backed down for the pur pose of drawing the cars nut. The engineer, Calvin P. Church, had left the engine tempo rarily, and gone into the caboose car, while the fireman, a boy fifteen years old, wll- 4 left on IL Hamilton called to Church, suppo sing him to he on the engine, to back down ; the boy told hint Church W 9 2, not on; he then told the boy to back down slowly, which he did, (as shown by the evidence.) us slowly as he could. Hamilton attempted to put in the coupling pin, but did not succeed. and was caught bet,‘ Vell the bumper of the tender and the' caboose ear. The bumper of the tender struck him about the small of the buck, and the “dead-wood" of the car in the pit of the stomach. The engineer now jumped on and re versed the engine, when deceased fell across the track. He was picked up and taken care of, but only survived half en hour, having received severe internal injuries. His body was con veyed to the Allegheny depot, where Coroner Bostwick arrived about eight o'clock, sum moned a jury and held an inquest, which de veloped the facts above stated. The jury, after mature deliberation found the following ver dict: "That deceased came: to his death by being crushed between a tender and a caboose car, on the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chi cago Railroad, near the outer depot, at Alle gheny, on the afternoon of August 31st, 1859 ; the engineer, Calvin R. Church, beihe off the engine, and George Cassiday, the fireman, a boy of fifteen, who had been on the road one week, having backed the engine at the request of deceased." Hamilton was a single man, between twenty live and thirty, and boarded at .Tames Martin's, Gay alley, Allegheny City. His friends took charge of the body fur burial. ME STEED /scork:, whatan infinite source of gratification it is. What a world of instruc tion it offers to us. It brings to our observa tion every remote and interesting object ex tant, worthy of our notice, and familiar to us in the history of the past and the present. A pretty toy. says one. A mere picture machine, says another. And nothing more ? Con jecture is utterly at fault to determine the valuable uses to which it shall be applied. Like the steam engine, printing ma- ChinlVi and the telegraph, it is destined to a wide field of service:and here is a hint of the fact. A clever Yankee is about already, selling the furniture manufactured by an eastern house from stereoscopic patterns—nay. views in every variety of position. of the hrticle itself, so per fect and distinct, that every detail may be ex amined, even to the grain of the wood ! It is 4 shrewd appropriation of art and science by the substantial interests of business life. When cheapness has domesticated the stere oscope, the flintily of to-day will be visible ex istence to be looked upon by the remote pos terity of centuries beyond. The home, the scenes of our every day life, will have a posi tive reality is hundred or a thousand' years hence, with the people of that day and gener ation. Think of it with reverence—had the art been known to the world, even as it is now, two thousand years ago, the awful SCOW. of Calvary would have come down to us just as it was transacted. Imagination in the painter's genius affects to delineate the impo sin,* sublimity and terror of the scene on can vas; but With photography and the stereoscope We should have had foreVer before us the ac tuai details of that memorable event. SINGULAR INCIDENT—A MAN VOLUNTARI LY CUTS Oil BOTH His ARMS UNDER A PAIR pl TRON ShMi4rd details one of the moat singular, and at the sau,a time, horrible cases of self mutilation ever re corded. It occurred at the rolling mill of Irwin, Linn, M'Coy & Co., of Milesburg, Centre county, on Wednesday of last week, under the following cireumstances A young man I named Aaron Indy, who had recently been pardoned out of the penitentiary, where he was confined for horse stealing, had been banging' armitid the rolling mill for several days. Nothing unusual wasobserved in his demeanor. On Wednesday morning,, soon after the works were started, he deliberately walked to the large iron shears, and before any one was aware of his design, planed his arms between the blades, mThell) of yviaich were completely severe about idway bet Ween the hands and eibows horrible act Performed so coolly and de liberately that no suspicion was entertained of his design. When questioned us to his m o tive for the self-mutilation, he replied that "his pands had been the Means of 'fending him to the penitentiary once, and he was determined they should never get him into trouble again.' He was taken to a neighbor's house, and a phy sician sent for who re-amputed both his arms —an operation which he is said to have borne with a stoicism and indifference that astonished all who witnessed it. He is recovering rapidly and manifests the utmost unconcern for the icssa of his arms. A number of witnesses were exam ined, whose testimony proved that the train was running very fast, and that if a moderate rate of speed had been used, the man's life • would have been saved. In this view, the jury returned the following verdict : " We, the jurors in this case, find that the deceased, Andrew Ellis, came to his death by falling on the track, in attempting to cross the same at Sewickley station, and being run over by the, mail train on the Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Railroad: The jury believe, from the testi-I mony, that the life of the deceased might have been saved if the said train had been running at a speed not exceeding fifteen miles per hour, in passing the station and, further, that the officers of the-road aro deserving of censure for the great speed at which their trains almost invariably pass this station, in violation, ac cording to their own testimony, of the rules governing their trains." More Snake Stories Our ex changes are teeming with wonderful stories about snakes. Happily we have few of the slimy creatures in this vicinity wherewith to produce a "sensation," but we think the following from the Huntingdon American will do: "One day last week, whilst Messrs. James Watson and Conrad Buff were engaged plow ing a geld belonging to the farm of the former, in Woodcock Valley, about sir miles from this place, they plowed up . 1.1 nest of snake:, and from the appearance of the ground, as the reptiles made for safe quarters in all directioni, they thought they bad trespassed upon a world of snakes, as the earth was completely covered for the distance of several hundred yards. They immediately stopped their horses, and made an onslaught on then, and after about fifteen minutes hard labor, counted the killed, and found that they had the number of righke two —sixty-two vipers, and twenty black- Yet large as this story may seem, we have one from the Hollidaysburg Standard which eclipses it. if true, M. Hampton must be an intrepid man to encounter so many of the ugly reptiles, especially as the story told by the edi tor of the Uniontown Gcnia.s proves conclu sively that this particular species will, singly, attack a man: "Mr. Hampton, of Franklin township. ono day last week, was engaged in quarrying stone, in a quarry close to the turnpike road, and ob serving tWo or three ;mikes lying on a rock, ho started-a - Z[lr thaw, but as he appFonched they secreted themselves under a rock.
