THE DOUG LAS MEETING
Purstiant to a- call published in the Pe
the friends of Hon. Stephen A. Douglas as
sembled last, evening. for the purpose of ot
ganizing a Douglas Club. There was a goo ,
attendance, and much enthusiasm was man
heated. Several I speeches were Made
which will be fount fully reported in our
local columns. The speakers advocated
harmony and unity, and favored - a liberal
support of the Shite ticket nominated at
llarrisburg, as the best meal's of accomplish
ing that end.
The Committee appointed to report per
manent officers for the Douglas Club of Al
legheny county. reported the names Mr.
Jacob 31'Collister as President. nine Vice
Presidents, whose names will be found in
the proceedings of the meeting. Secretarics
and Treasurer. The report of the Commit
tee was unanimously adopted, and the gen
tlemelknamed. by acclamation, approved of
as the permanent officers of the Club. A
Committee was also appointed to draft a con
stitution and bylaws, who are to report
at
an adjourned meeting on Thursday evening
September 13th.
The friends of Mr. Douglas have espoused
his cause with earnestness and spirit, and are
determined to advocate his claims for the
Charleston nomination by all honorable Dem
ocratic means.

N.•"c York Trif. , ,,,e contains the follow
special telegram, from which it would appear
that Mr. Pireckinridge does not intend to lw
a-candidate at the presenttirne for the Presi- -
tial nomination. Mr. Itreckinridge is orient'
the most statitsmen in the coun
try, young, talented, ardent and enthusiastic.
II is I wmocratie record is pure, and lie has the
confidence of his countrymen who would
delight to do him honor, now or hereafter.
It has before been intimated that the Vice
President was content to look to the future
and would leave the present battle to be
fought by older contestants longer in the
field. Although not accustomed to take for
gospel everything which appears in the
we have reason to believe that its
information contained in the following dis-
patch, is correct :
WAS I GTO N, Au g 28, 1859
Attorney-General Black, in conversation
with a Democratic editor in Pennsylvania.
said that he was in receipt of a letter from
Vice-President Breekinridge, in which he Faid
that he was not, and would not be under any
circumstances, a candidate for the Presidency.
This is from a source entirely trustworthy.
The N w Void: raid announce the ~ a nn,
fact in the following words
Judge Black has received a letter from V ice
Presldent Breckinridge, deprecating any use
whatever of his name in connection with the
nomination for the Presidency. It is said that
he prefers a seat in the Senate. The recently
el.kded Legislature of Kentucky will elect
him as the successor to Mr. Crittenden, whose
term expires March, 1814.
'Phis would seem to settle the question of
the Vice President, preferences. lie would
prefer six years . service in the tienete to the
chances of the Presidental canvass at the
present time. and that the new I o islature
of Kentucky will elect him as the succes
sor of John .1. Crittenden, whose term ex
pires in
TENTH OF SIEPTEMBEH.
All along the shores of Lake Erie. the peo
ple are making preparations to visit Put-in-
Bay on the anniversary of Perry's victory,
when the foundation of a monument to the
hero of the lakes is to be laid. From pres
ent appearances, the largest gathering in
the West may be looked for on this occa
sion. From all the cities on the lakes, Issas
will run on excursion trips, and people from
all parts of the country will be present.—
The lake region around Put-in-Bay, and Kel
ley's Island L as beautiful and romantic as
any around Lake Erie, besides being replete
wits interesting historical reminiscences. We
know of no more pleasant tripwhich a Pitts
burgher could take than to visit Kelley'
-Island for a few days, where we can guar
antee that they will be most hospitably
entertained by. Addison Kelley, Esq.,of the Is

and on the tenth, go to Put-in-Bay,
which is onl3 half a dozen miles otl. The Is

MR. 0. P. RIGBY, the engineer, who, it was
reported some months ago, was garotted in
Havana, Cuba, for running a train off the track,
is alive and well and at the present time run
ning a train on the flayana railroad. It is cus

arrested, but, after an inquiry into the matter,
was honorable discharged, and reinstated in
his former position. Mr. 'Rigby has friends in
this city and State, and the false report of his
death gave them a great deal of pain. The
Cuban law is well calculated to reduce the
number of railroad accidents.

STRUGGLE BEM EE2I,ST ATE AND
NATIONAL AUTHORITY.
That it hick it was feared would happen in
the celebrated "Obetlin Rescue Case," at
Cleveland, has actually transpired in anoth
er and much smaller ease. On Friday last,
according to the P.Ouica... - r, a constable went
into a store on I int:trio street with a writ of
replevin to levy mon an iron safe. The
store and !mods had been attached by the
United States Marshal, and were in the
hands of a deputy at the time the constable
made his appearance with the said writ.
The deputy declined letting the safe go.
The Constable insisted and the deputy re
sisted. There was a strug, fle. Deputy call
ed on citizens to aid him in sustaining the
majesty of the United State,. law. Consta
ble appealed to them to sustain the majes
ty of the t-j•tate law. Some rushed to the aid
of the Deputy and others to that or the
Constable, and the novel :ant animated spec
tacle of a dozen men or more, Mt ided into
two excited factions, and tugzing whit till
their might for the ma,tery of a 'J.., was
presented to the shunting tt il,tl' or many

Democracy.
It worries the opposition excessiValy that
with all their intemperate abuse and ingenious
ly invented misrepresentation, they cannot sev
er the people's attachment to the democratic
party. The reason of that fact is, however,
clearly perceptible to every impartial mind.
The American masses are intelligent, grateful,
and patriotic, and they know that democracy
means the soy ERE lON P EOPL E, and that all its
past actions have been for the good of the toil
ing millions, and not the aggrandizement of
the aristocratic fete. Nonce the poisoned ar
rows hurled froin republican bows full harm

Artifices of the Opposition
Thn opposition appear determined to "open
the slave trade," ''pass a slit. e code," and op
pose popular sovereignty" for the democrats,
as the hater will do none of these things-them
selves. Really, the miserable shifts the oppo
sition are put to to "makeup a case" are amus
ing, but not alarming. The old stories about
democratic enormities, horrible purposes, &c.,
&e., are rife again. Once they were accused
of forming a plot to burn all the cherches in
the country ; then of taking a census merely
