The race between the •• I. C. Woodward „

Five o'clock was the appointed hour, and be

occasions, alive with wat,•r craft of every de

farther end of the Bourse as buoys, and coon after
live, the word was given and the boats started.
The Woodward liiok the lend at first but just
at the lIIMIth of I•errc ,treet the Jackson pulled
up, overtoot and passed her. The .fiLekson

came up Tar in advance of her competitor,
winning the race in 21:14. The time of the

friends the lawyers. Froin this tax the State

three hundred thousand dollar, per allllll2ll.
•I'he road hating refused. to pay it. a suit is the
consequence. The road will light the suit
until it rea;hes th,. Supreme Court of the Uni

trial next week. Mr. Stanton, of Virginia,
Messrs. Cuyler, Meredith and Crittenden, arc
retained on the part of the Commonwealth.
The attorneys for the road have strong hopes
gaining their ease. They will come out
tlat-footed for the unconstitutionality nil the
tax. They think that the State has no more
right to charge a tax. of ten cents a barrel for
the trait Ait to Philadelphia for flour ground in
Westmoveland county, titan to make the same
charge for 'flour produced in Lancaster. Be
cause whent is brought to the city by the Penn
sylvania Railroad, there is no more reason, in
the opinion of Mr. Cuyier, that that wheat
should pay a tax of three coiti per bushel,
than though it was o••va in Northumberland

that, in contesting this suit, the Attorney-Gen

determined to carry matters through, and show
that two wrong,, do not make a right, nor ever

during the progress of the case, will hear sonic

kind.
