Chairman. pKNNKI'EVANIA i\Ve perceive in the Pennsylvania papers that demonstrations of public favor aro being made in all sections of that great State, in favor Of :-;..mttor Douglas. We do not know how •it is now ; but there is no room to doubt that, before the time of holding the Charleston Conven tion, the undivided moral influence of the De ny:ruey of Pennsylvania will be for nomina ting such candidates and making such a plat form for national support as will insure the greatest entbusiasisiu among among the north its Democracy. And what candidate could carry Peensylvania and two or three of the New England States, so certainly as Stephen A. Douglas? And what platform could be inure .acceptable. more just to all sections, than the one he stands on. We learn from the Pittsburgh Pc.l that the friends of Senator Douglas, held a meeting. a few nights since, in that city, •• preparatory to the formation of a permanent organization. for the purpose or promoting, by all honorable means in their peeler, the nominati o n for the Presidency in 'Sad" of Senator Douglas. Some of the most honored Democratic names in Pitts burgh appear in the published proceedings ; and the Pest says that "the soundest Demo cratic feeling prevailed, and the most enthu siastic approval of the political course of Sena tor Douglas was expressed." It should be re membered that the Poet has not of late been regarded as at all friendly to any man or any thing that is disliked by President Buchanan. The indications are cheering ; there is improve ment every day in public sentiment with re gard to this,PreAdential qui-gion. The b a ll once started, it cane ,t be stoppfsl or , 1 „Led in its course.—(7tir4neJ n,,,,,. • The 7'Ote's hardly treats us fairly in , at ing aye have not been regarded as at all friend') to `• any man or anything that is dis liked by Mr. Buchan:lu. - We are friend ly to every honest Ilnnneratic man, :001 every honest I ,PITI.VratI4. of t • country. As the President of the [tilted States, as an able statesman: and as the leader of the Democratic party, tte r.•tz:t , l Mr. Buchanan with the Itotew esteem. Pis great servie, - -- to the ~ , ,[lll try. his: honest integrity of purpo-e. and he patriotic desires for the good of the 1 e , pl. entitle him to the confident:, an•l sup port of the Democratic heart ,wf th, country. But his declaration of a fixed de termination to retire from political life at the close of his present term of office, ren ders it not only the privilege. but the ilut of the Democracy to look about them ter an able, honest statesman :is his successor. The erorr of the Tina.s consists in supposing that those who are. and have been friendly *to Ore President must of necessity be antag mnis-tical to Mr. Douglas. The personal dif ferencss of great and valuable public men are nothing to the putclic . political ditlerenc ces of opinion, are the unquestior , l right of all, and are not to be made causes of feuds and quarrels between the friends of political men. On his own .merits; on what he has done, and is capable of doing for the 1 country, Mr. Douglas must stand or fall. His brilliant talents, and his distinguished public services have made him one of the foremost statesmen of the country. If Le re ceives the Democratic nomination i.l' the Charleston I 'onvention, it will be because of hi, brilliant talents, hi' , able vindication on all occasions of the great truths of Democ racy, and his, manly independence and ener gy of character- mit because he has nut agreed on all political questions with the able statesman now at the head of public atlitii.s. Mr. Buchanan President, and most ably has he administered the government or his country, but he has himself fixed the limit of his services•—services tar which the nation is grateful, and of which the Demo cratic party ii proud—and the brilliant statesman or Illinois--the " Little Giant of the West " has won so large a share of pop ular favor by his courageous and manly course of action, that Democrats look to ability and patriotism as a sustaining power in-the future. WORK TO BE DONE The Democratic County Committee meets to-day at the St. Charles Hotel. We pre sume they will take measures for the com plete and thorough organization of the par ty in the county. In every district effi cient men should be appointed, as vigilance committees, to see that every vote is brought out. It is true that the Opposition are largely in the majority in this county. but still, Allegheny is an inte2,-al part of the great Democratic State of Peenn , ylv If ia, and it is of the utmostimportance, in view of the Presidential contest next year, that the Democracy should triumphantly elect their State ticket this fall. There is mu 1L ifemocratic work to he done. The I )emocrats of Allegheny county may decide the fate of the State. The fearless and consistent Democrats upon the ticket should receive every Democratic vote in Allegheny county. The time of the election is near at hand, and a thorough organisation of the party forces initiated by the committee to-day, willso, fa; towards cutting down the oppo aionMajority, and enabling the Democra cy-Of Allegheny - to render a good account of themselves next October. The effort should be to stir up the mein hers of the partY to present action upon the ssues before them in the present campaign. The fact that there are no political topics of exciting interest involved in the coining election should deter no Democrat from using every exertionto secure thisuccess of our State ticket. The moral effect of the result in Pennsylvania this fall, upon the political contest next year, will be tremen dous.: 4n this view of the subject, our wisest course. is to df , ;:.2t 4 . 72ur energies to sno, ness ;,now 'n''47(bjejcutsstno.i.fenditfaheeuiret decision Pfter,,' '•• • • .11.1-'44 _ire;• .• 4 t•-• P',l; ... ~ • - - IMIMEi .1.
