The wholesale dealers in boots, shoes, hats, dry goods, hard . ware, groceries and variety goods, are:tpre pared with stocks which cannot be surpassed either in quality or cheapness in any city in the Union. The cool weather of the last week or two, is sending people home from the watering places, and our streets are beginning to assume a business aspect again. The, summer so journers in the country have had their weeks of leisure and recreation, and now are prepared with renewed energy to enter upon the more important part of life, its business. The pros pects of a good fall trade for our city are flat tering. The West and Southwest are blest with fine crops, and have the wherewithal to buy. The people are tolerably free from debt in these parts.of the country, and will be dis posed to purchase liberally and to pay prompt._ - ly. The continually increasing wants of the population will make a fair demand for trade. The newspapers give to th e country merchants the first indications of the revival of trade, and it is now time that their business column a were crowded with advertisements, showing the nature and extent of what we have to sell and indicatingthe activity of operations in our ...city. Our merchants aro prepared to sell largely and at fair prices. The time has ar rived for them to advertise their stocks. The newspaper is tha first place, the purchaser looks to find out the best place to buy what he wants. and a liberal system of advertising will always pay- EMI NENE --<.;~ ..:{: paiii ) FRIDAY MORNING :::::: ::AUGUST 26 DEMOCRATIC STATE TICKET AUDITOR GENERAL, RICHARDSON L. A large proportion of the Democracy are of the opinion that the selection of Charles ton, as the place for holding the National Dernixratic Nominating Convention, was an ill-considered movement. Its location s-not sufficiently central, and besides, the hail and hotel capacities of the city nre in 'capable of accommodating the immense number of parsons who will be present, be yond doubt,on the occasion of the Presiden tial nomination. I n this respect the capacity of Charleston is, perhaps, not one-tenth as great as that of Cincinnati, and yet all who were present, as we were, at the Convention of ISSG, are aware that it was almost impossible for the multitude in attendance to obtain even passable accommodations in that city. It is said that Charleston has but two ho tels, and their largest hall is only of sufll ciene size barely to accommodate the dele gates to the Conventilin. It is not likely that less than twenty thousand people will be present, to say the least, attracted by the political excitements of the occasion. We have a high appreciation of the generous hospitality of our Southern friends, but it strikes us that this army of politicians will absolutely " eat them out of house and home," and when night comes, they will be obliged to "camp out." In this view of the case, large numbers of the Democracy would favor a change in the place of hold ing the convention. It' is not yet too late for the National Committee to make such a change. The suggestion is made in no fac tious nor illiberal spirit. The National De mocracy of the North grant to those of the South, that, all things considered, it is most right and proper that the Convention should be held in a slave State. We suggest the city of St. Louis as the most available place for holding the Convention. It is central, and possesss all the requisite accommoda tions, in the shape of large halls, hotels, &c. Besidesit is not liable to the obj ections on the scoreof health which the people of the North cannot help but feel at visiting a city so far South as Charleston, during the warm sea son. We suggest the change of location of the Convention, believing it would be satis factory to the party, both North and South, and hope the National Committee may, in their wisdom, adopt it. A VOICE FROM THE ALLEGHENIES. The evidences of the popularity of the New Hampshire boy, who has risen by the force of his talent and honesty, energy from the bench of the cabinet maker, to the Senate of the United States are daily coming to our knowl edge. A correspondent at Hollidaysburg, Pa., writes us as folio we: " The ball is opening very finely for the Little Giant.' Old Berks leads off. The Dele gate from Little Blair is favorable to Douglas, although there was no particular eoptcst in ref erence to the Presidency, or anything else. "There cannot be any doubt in relation to public sentiment in this Btato—the masses are for Douglas and no mistake." Erie Railroad. The Erie Directors met on Tuesday, to re ceive the report of the committee which Is en trusted with the plan of reorganization. It is understood that the committee propose to re duce the capital stock and bonds to $ 2 6,800,000, to leave the mortgage debt as it stands—say slB,ooo, ooo.—and to give SO per cent of the new stock to the unsecured bondholders, and 20 per cent to the old stockholders. It is also pro posed to assess the new stockholders $1,200,000, to pay off the floating debt, &c., and to ask the bondholders to fund four coupons. If this be the best the committee can do, we appiehend :`that they have lost their time. PHILADELPHIA NOMINATIONS. A SIGN OF THE TIMES The opposition are getting very uneasy at tie " prospect ahead." They appear to think that the capital which their leader is trying t, [oaks for himself in Europe, will be of little service at home. The Exeter Hall fanatics do n o t poll votes in American ballot boxes. The NVa,i ington correspondent of the New York Herald under date of the 23d inst., says : It is reported that W. H. Seward has been written to that his immediate presence in this country is desirable. Something must be done to force Douglas to take strong Southern Democratic ground, or the leading republican, fear he will break up their party in the North west. They now see the folly of their union with him against Lecompton. Douglas gets all the credit for that job. and seems determin ed to hold a conservative or middle ground, which is satisfactory to people of the pi Valley. Hence Seward is wanted to defeat the machinations of the Little tliant. - Will he come! The Kansas border ruffians are in arms again, after a brief season of inaction. Late account state that considerable uneasiness was felt in the Territory, and a renewal of the old di,tur bances was anticipated. The diggers in the Kansas gold region, act ing up to the doctrine of squatter ,overeignty, have adopted a State constitution, a portion of which has just been published. The nigger question has in this instrument been ignored entirely, while the right of suffrage is restrict ed to the whites. The latest accounts from this gold region speak of new and very productive discoveries of the precious metal, Schuylkill County The Democratic Convention of Schuyil, ill ounty met at Pottsville on Thursday and nominated Michael Beard, Jas. St. Francis College The fall session of St. Francis College, at Loretto will commence on the first Monday of September. This is one of the best educational institutions in the State. The location is in the pure air of the Allegheny mountains, the ac commodations excellent, and the system of in struction most admirable. True Economy. London is about to spend $20,000,000 on draining her streets, on keeping filth from flow ing into the Thames, and on saving it for ag riculture. This is probably the most extensive, the most useful, and in all respects the most economical sanitary reform ever attempted. Had one hundred millions, instead of twenty, been devoted to the purpose, there would have baeroao extravagance committed. Apart from the considerations of health, we have the fact that at present, England, and with her most of the world, is rapidly exhausting her soil and giving nothing back in return. Every year sees agriculture becoming more expensive and food really dearer, owing to this destruction of the world's truest wealth. At present, a few guano beds offer temporary relief ; : but sooner or later we must fallback on the supplies af forded by cities, which are now wasted. A Fo_o-T-n - A.ca took place a few days ago, at Boehester, New York, between two men, Railed respectively " The American. Deer," and " North Star." They ran five miles, for a wa ger of three hundred dollars. The Deer was not fleetenough for the Star, who made the live miles in thirty.seven minutes. PROFESSOR GARDINER On Thursday, about the -hour of noun, the hunrgry denizens of our goodly city were startled by the sound of a gong, which was appended to a carriage driven along the streets by an individual with a blue cap, who an nounced that Prof. Gardiner would,in the even ing, deliver a lecture, scientific and hunior ous, upon the Monongahela wharf, with the con sent of the Mayor and civil authorities having been obtained. It was the Professor himself, in all his glory. He has traveled the world all over; has received a splendid gold medal at the World's Fair, a silver one from the hands of the victor of Solferino, vet he is not pulled up, but drives his otvn carriage, and beats his own gdng, and extols the merits of his soap, which is, in all respects, a most capital artiele, and all ho says about it is as true us preaching. Tho Professor an original, has seen the world, is evidently aware that some things can he done as well as others, - is ready at all times to supply,in any quantity, his world renowned soap, which everybody should use. as it is in all respects a capital article. Tile portrait of Mr. Chicle, Anie.=. ha been purdiased for $50(). Mr. Spurgeon's Lost Mr. Spurgeon, in preach in at Norwich last week, indulged in SUMO of his characteristic hu mor. "Content," he said. "made our cup run over, while discontent knocked the bottom out." The story which had recently appeared in the papers about his having a large fortune left hita was a complete hoax : if he were to have a guinea for every falsehood told about him, he could build hi: great chapel very soon, find probably have enough left for a cathedral or two . Christian men sometimes fell terribly fon °reach other, like the two English ships which broadsid ed each other for hours in a mist, without know ing that the British flag was flying at their mastheads. The lacy man was one of th e , hi.'- gest sinners on earth ; if he did nothing he broke one of God's greatest coin inaielment, There was a very strict Sabbatarian gardener, who was very hard upon his master about the observance of the Sabbath. Ills master said to him, " Why, you break the commandments yourself." " How ?" said the gardener, •• don't work on a Sunday." " No," quail the master, "nor on any other day. Just. repeat the commandment." The gardener obeyed, find when he came to "sic days shalt thou labor and do all that thou bast to do," his master, said, "There, stop there: that is as much a part of the commandment as that • the seventh day is the Sabbath.' " . . . The stickling for sectarian distinctions was as absurd as if a hungry man about to eat some bread were told by a Churchman, '• No bread like the tin loaf," or by a Methodist, " You must eat twists." The hungry man would say, " Give me some bread, and I will settle the shape afterwards." It jars somehow upon the feelings to see the copious reports which the country Rapers give of Mr. Spurgeon's " serm ons" copiously interlarded with "laughter."— London Times, August 9, The Democrat: or..iillegheny Ceunly, favor able to the numinittioit of Stephen A.:Douglas, of Illinois, for President of the United States, are requested to meet at V igilantllall, on 'Tues day evening, August :30th, 1859, at 13 o'clock, to take such measures as will best promote the interests of their candidate, and of the Demo- erotic party : James Irvin, William Irvin, John Rogers, John Dunwoody, William Alexander, James E.
