May be iu this very room." "No. In one of those little back bed rooms off the staircase, when he was all alone The first speaker was an English gentle man of about nine-and -twenty years of age, of rather slim figure, dark eyes. and intel lectual brow.—The second speaker was a German gentleman of about thirty-two, who spoke our language with a very imperfect accent, though grammatically. Unlike his companion, he was short and stoat, and had light hair and moustache, a remarkably clev er head and features, and piercing grey eyes glittered from behind the large spectacles which he wore; and was in the habit of con tinually adjusting. The dialogue, of which I have given the commencement was held in the parlor of an inn in Peaseod Street, Windsor, and not more than a stone's-throw from St` George's Chapel. I had been to Windsor for a day's holiday, and beimg without an umbrella, and overtaken by a shower of rain, I ran into this inn—the nearest at hand—and called for some refreshment, which was served inn in the room iu a hich the German and En gliShman were sitting. The expression made use of—" the deed was done," and "when he was all alone"— led me to believe, or conclade, that the conversation of these gentlemen had re fereice to some celebrated - murder, and that the inn in which it had been commit ted, like the King's Arms in hugely, had become notorious in consequence. Nor did the dialogue, as it was continued, do aught to remove this impression. On the contrary, it confirmed it. "Do you not experience a sensation of awe," said the German, holding his breath for a moment, and !coking up at the low ceiling, "when you reflect that in this very room—fcr it must have been the parlor in those days—he ate, drank, laughed, and talked and observed all that tiva3 passing around him ?" "I do not think he did the last," return ed the Englishman: t'hc was too much ab- Sorbed in his other reflections, I should say. what rogue Sir John, and that French doc tor, and-the parson, and those jades who played their parts so well, came here with him. Depend`upon ik, it was all planned in some tavern in London, and merely put into execution in this ancient abode." "It may be so. An acquaintance with the locality was, probably, all that was re quired- to complete the business." "And yet he must have been bee before, and no doubt was iu the habit of using. this - house." _ , "How old do you suppose this house to be—the structure'!" "I should say judging from the height, or rather the lowness of the ceiling, the formation of the staircase, the g.tbles, the beams; and the exterior generally, that it was built as far back as the reign of Henry the - Sixth or Seventh.—Even the oldest of the buildings in the vicinity—excepting the Castle, o course--are modern iu com parison with this." "Yes, I noticed that." ' "In those days, no doubt, this was the inn, and was as much frequented as the White Hotel or the Castle is now-a-days." "Much as 1 was struck with that stately pile of building, which seem to represent the firmness, the solidity, the wealth, the power, and the pride of this great and won derful nation, I confess to you that they have not-for me that peculiar kind of inte rest, that indescribable charm; which this old house possesses.' "I share your feelings. Often as I run down here, I never pass this house without having a good stare at it, and experiencing a sensation which you will readily conceive, but which it would be difficult for me to escribe." "When I get back to Germany, and tell - my friends all that I have seen in England the many things that have afforded me such immense delight—l will not fail to tell them ate beefsteak, and bread, and potatoes, and drunk a-quart of ale, in a house that, so long as the English and German language —nay more, so long as this world lasts :Ind is inhabited—will be heard of, and read of, and pictured to the mind of man, in every land where books are to be found." As I was a stranger in Windsor, and as I had not even looked at the sign of the inn into vihich.l hurried to escape the shower, I began to wonder where I was, and what the peculiar charm the old house possessed in the eyes of two gentlemen, whose conver sation and mode of expressing themselves - were those- of really clever people; and further, who was this great man who had been foully murdered by Sir John Some body, having as his accomplice a doctor, a -- parson, and two jades. 1 did not like to leave the room and inquire. In truth al though my curiosity was becoming intense, I did not like to lose one word.of the dis course, especially as my presence did not seem to impose upon them the slightest restraint or reserve. Like two sensible men, they talked on quietly and energetically. taking it for granted that I was intent on the newspaper which I had taken up, and was running my eye over. "Let us.stay here to night," suggested the German. " Let us have a bed in the old house." • "With all my heart," said the English - man. "And we will stand at the bar, and in the tap, and conjure up all the characters that fOquented the house in those days—the laundresses, the washers, the wringers, the - drawers, the bullies, and "the drunken knaves that had not the fear of God." not - that mite host shall lead us on with a well bUited delay till we have to pawn something - tt pay his bill." The German gentleman laughed very heartily at this remark, though- whatever Wit it contained was entirely lost upon me . at the time. "Have you received no promise of satis faction at her bands?" said the Enlislrinan gravely. "Never 1" ejaculated the German. "Have you importuned her to such a purpose ?" - - -"Never I" "Of what quality was your love then " - 4 Like a fair house built upon another -span's ground; so that I have lost my edi fice, by mistaking the place where I erected IL" 4 -7 -Here they both indulged in hearty laugh ter, I confess that this part of their dis- Ourse was to me both incomprehensible and incoherent —I desire also to state that, although my acquaintance with literature is not precisely insignificant, my memory is not a very retentive one. .."Let us go to the bookseller's in Castle Street and buy the volume," said the En lishman. "Certainly," said the German. I Rising from their chairs, they left the kcom; but previous' to doing so, each of them made to me a very polite bow, which returned.—The moment they took their !departure I rang the bell. The waiter !came. "What is the sign of this house?" I ask led. "Sign air? We call it the / Star, sir." , ,o; OISE "Was any murder ever committed in this house?" • • Murder, sir? No, eir. Never 'card u'unc, "Then for what is the house famous?" "Famous, sir? Nothing particular, that I am aware of sir." "Who were those gentlemen that were here just now?" "Those gentlemen, sir? Don't know, si , .—The thin gentleman often comes in here, sir, looks round, and has a gla,s of ale, sir. But the stout gentlemen, sir, I never saw before to day, sir," Nor did a conversation which I had, a minute afterwards, with the landlord of the inn, afford me any enlightenment. Of his own knowledge, he could only say that the house was noted for the excellent quali ty of the liquors that were drank in it, I asked him if he would permit me to inspect the upper roo:ils. He consented most cheerfully. It was.now nearly dark, and preceeded by the waiter, who held a can dlestick in his hand, I ascended the old and narrow straight staircase, anti entered a passage on either side of which were bed rooms, some of them about the size and height of a poop cal,in of a six or seven hun dred toaship, some of the windows beingum much bigger than a large sheet of foolscap. The house must have always been kept in excellent repair, for it was in precisely the same condition as it was when " the . deed was done there, and when he was probably all alone." My curiosity was now so greatly excited that I determined upon waiting until the return of the two gentlemen and ask them to do me the favor of informing me for whet "the Star" was so famous ? and why two gentlemen of thekcvident capacity aid education should regard its precincts as hallowed ? Hearing footsteps in the pis sage, I began to think how I should address the strangers. Two persons entered the parlor, called for gill and water and pipes of tobacco. They were not the German and his English companion. They were two tradesmen of the town. This 1 gleaned from the remarks they made cone:riong the approaching election, and the maum:r in which they discussed the respective merits of the sitting members. My heart being ready to crack with iw patience, I was tempted to pmt a Lew g ue,,- tions to one of these persons, a very good natured, middle aged persoa. "Do you live in Windsor, sir," I said. " Yes, sir. I was born and bred her:.' "This.is a very old house ?" "Very, sir." "And famous—is it not." "Well, I don't know sir. I uses it, as did my lather and grandfather before me . It's hands to my shop Over the way, you see, sir; and I am at home in half a min ute, if I am wanted for anythimf •' But n•as nut there rune great exile, a murder--once committed here ?" " Not that I have heard of, sir " Theh turning to his friend he asked," Did you, William, ever hear of anything of the sort? "No," was the emphatic reply. der ! Lord bless us ! who would ever think I of committing murder under the very nose I of Windsor Castle ? The only thing for which I ever heard the house much talked about by my old father was in conneetion with .Kkg George. 111. when he was a little bit cracky. One day, before they made him nut downright toad, he came in here— into this very room—and being dressed more like a farmer than a king, nobody knew who he was,, and never dreamt that it was George 111. Well, down he sit:4;llnd enters into the talk that was g"ing bn Presently the king says something or other which nun of the company, a butcher, dis put,l. The king however held to his spin ion, whereupon the butcher says to him "Look here, my good fellow, I will bet yon a bowl of punch on that matter!" "Done! says the him , . " Done" says the butcher. I "Now who will you refer it to? "—" Any body you like," says the king, knows anything about horses." " Well the head I groom at the royal stables?" says the hutch er. "Yes," says the king, "But you and I must get under the table when the question is put by a third party. lie must not see either of us, as he may be known to you, and you to him." "Agreed," s ays th e butcher. Well, sir, a messenger was sent off to the bead groom, and down he comes to settle the question ; and he settled it ~,,,n'nst the king. Whereepon the king crawls from under the table, and looking at the head groom, who fill down on his knees, he says to him : " Why it was upon your authority that I made my statement, and now upon yourauthority. I lose my wager!" "Forgive me, your majesty!" says the head groom. As soon as lie said "your majesty," I every body threw down their pipes and paid him the respect that was due him as the Sovereign of England." MARBLE! MARBLE!!
