Our mart is situa tenii on the'corner of Irwin street and Dtpitteifie Way, on the bank of the Allegheny, and the proprietor of the yard and the adjoining hotel reaps u /golden harvest, if no one else does. Horses :are often sold here at fabulously low figures,' frequently less than the value of the " - hide and tallow,'," but there are .generally enough " horse-chirps" about to prevent horses from being sold at too great a sacrifice, and at the same time turn an honest penny for them selves. The auctioneer is a shrewd individual, huts borse-talk always at his ton"ue's end, and IS'alWays lqquaeiutts uauu h, titnt ready to take a "nip" with the fortimate . selltir, or the unfor .l.lnate purchaser. Sometimes he lies n fair spe cimen of horse-flesh to sell, and he then grows superbly eloquent, dwelling longupon his good qualities, and ignoring any boaones he may have. But however ungainly the object of which he is to dispose, he maintains a gravity sometimes made ludicrous by ono look at the horse. Last Saturday he had for sale a poor old horse, who looked as if he had seen many sears of service, which he introduced te the .audience. He was yet strong enough to' bear the weight of a boy, who mounted him, and exhibited his fine points within the enclosure, not daring to risk his paces on the cobble-stone Oyez:neut. He was not a bad looking animal; S With oae eye rut, ult. other VAM,.t. Mr. J. B. Howe, the present'lessee, is a gen tleman of energy, ability and enterprise as a manager, and possessing rare talents as an actor, and we think he will succeed in inaugu rating a more successful dramatic season than than the experience of managers in this city for the past few years would lead us to antici pate. But he has bent all his erergies to re storing the palmy days of the drama here, and we trust ho may be reworded. During the summer the Theatre has been entirely and thoroughly renovated, back and front, inside and outside, stage and auditorium. The old decorations have been removed and new ones of the most costly character substi tuted, anew.dome has been added, the interior newly painted and papered, and new gas da tures and stage machinery put in. A magnifi cent new act drop has been painted by George Morris, Sr., and assistants, of beautiful design and fine execution, and a new green baize cur tain covers it. In short., the interior presents a fresh, cheerful appearance, and all who have frequented the establishment, know it is tire most comfortable place of amusement in the city. THE LATEST NEWS BY TELEGRAPH. P.•om Washington - WASHINGTON CITY, August 22—The admin istrtftion has bestowed upon the subject of the African slave trade, its earnest attention, and with the view of suppressing as far as possible the traffic, has initiated measures more efficient and more extensive than ever betore for that purpose. 'rho squadron for the coast of Africa as arranged be the Secretary of the Navy, will consist of the following named vessels:—The steamers Mystic, Sumpter, San Jacinto and Mohican and the sloop-of-war Constellation, the flag ship Portsmouth, Marion and Vin cennes. The most efficient officers are assign ed to their command ; those of the steamer Mystic and Sumpter, respectively are: Lieut. W. E. Leroy and Lieut. J. W. Aithens ; these gentlemen were, at their own request, entered to this service; their vessels being of light draft can penetrate waters too shallow for those which have heretofore been on that coast, besides having the advantage of steam, hence slavers will be more closely pursued. The joint treaty with England requires that tha United States shall keep there a force of eighty guns, but by the recent arrangement on ' the part of the administration the number of our guns will be one hundred and sixteen. Mr. Birney, who succeeds Mr. Morse as Na- I Storekeeper, went out in the Constellation, with instructions to remove the naval depot for the African i , quadron from Porto Praya to inn Paul do Leando, which is three hundred and thirty-six miles distant from Port Prove. This new depot will consequently be much nearer than the former to the principal points Hof :rad]: on the coast, and will, in a great mca,:ure, obviate the necessity of a long cruise on our own coast, too. Moro is to be an effi cient n a val force, composed of the :teumers Crusader, Lieutenant Moait; the Mohawk, Lieutenant C;;;,von, the Wyandotte, Lieuten ant z:tanley, and the Fulton, Commander G. G Williamson. They are to cruise in the neighborhood of Cuba for the purpoiie of cap turing any slaver which may, by their expert ness, escape the vigilance of our naval force on the African coast. These arrangements will soon go into full operation. and the Secretary .! the Navy no.v hurrying the preparation o•f such Of the vessels as are yet in port, for this important tzPrvice, The Gal% ezdon ftieilian , of the lath, thinks Elomton elected Governor by ton thousand to twelVe thousand majority, August. morning; tirettlo City ~n Deer I-land, which led to a general lire alarm in tho city, and .mgina compa nie, delvitched to the Pand, bit the fire us fortunut,ly to the ca=t wing, and the main I.„ilLimg , ,le:Lpeddatriage.
