THE IRON ORE OF LAKE SUPERIOR.
The mineral wealth of the region around
Lake BuPerior,is being yearly more and more
eveloped.: Its copper is the standard copper
f the world, and furnishes 'employment
and brings wealth to thousands of People.
But its wealth of iron, the great mineral sta
ple of the World, is also exhaustless, and is
becotining quite as important, as an article of
export, as its copper. At Marquette, a rail
-road has been built to the ore beds, and
thousands of tons of ore are shipped every
week from this point. This road brings to
theavharf about eight huudred tons of ore
Per week, which is loaded into schooners
and propellers, and brought to Ohio and
Pennsylvania, to be manufactured. A few
days since, there was no less than sixteen
vessels at this point loading with iron ore,
or awaiting their turn to load A large pro
portion of the ore brought from the Superi
or-country is landed at Cleveland and Erie,
and taken by the Cleveland and Washington
Railroad to Younestown, or by the Beaver
and Erie Canal, to the furnaces, near the
Beaver and Neshannock, to be made into
iron. Much of the ore is also brought to
Pittsburgh,' and some is shipped to Johns
town, where it is mixed with Pennsylvania
ore in the making of iron. This ore is of
the richest description, being about seventy
per cent of pure metal, and, mixed with
our Pennsylvania ore, turns out a quality of
iron - which cannot be surpassed. At the
ore beds it is worth about three dollars per
ton, and the cost of freight to the coal dis
tricts where it can be most readily and cheap
ly manufactured, is from $3,25, to 3,l';') per
ton. We understand that some heavy con
tracts have been made for its delivery at
furnaces in Pennsylvania, at per ton.
With seventy per cent ore, in furnaces at
the mouth of our Pennsylvania coal pits,
along waters navigable to a market, there is
the certainty of cheap production, at a good
profit, of our great Pennsylvania staple.
For some years past, tho iron masters
of Pennsylvania have been turning their at
tention to the means of cheap production
as a remedy for the neglect of Congress to
furnish the iron interest with adequate p-ce
tection in the shape of a tariff on iron and
coal. It is rimy the design of the iron men of
Allegheny County to establish blast furnaces
and manufacture the metal for their rolling
- mills from the ore instead of purchasing it
in the shape of pigs and blooms. e ine fur
nace has been nearly completed for this pur
pose, by Messrs. (I raff, Bennett S co., and
some ten or twelve others are in contempla
tion. All these will use more or less of
Lake Superior ore. Thus, not only will a
large increase occur in our manufactures, lett
a trade of great importance will spring up
between Pittsburgh and the lakes which
will result in benefits to all classes of the
community and especially to all branches
of the carrying trade, whether by land or
'water. This new phase of the iron business
will also result in largely increased domestic
prosperity among our manufacturers and
mechanics, and incidentally to buyers and
sellers iu all branches of business.
PATENT CASE SETTLED
Our readers will recollect that sometime last
year we- gave .an elaborate description of an,
invention by Mr. B. Lauth, of the firm of
Jones & Lauth, of the American Iron Works
of this city, by which he had perfectly suc
ceeded, by a simple and cheap process, of man
ufacturing common iron into shafting of all
sizes and any required length, of the most
perfect description, at a coat about one-half
as
great as by the old method of manufacturing.
The bars of metal ;are made perfectly cylin
drical, with a brilliant enamelled surface, much
more highly polished than can possibly be
done by turning and the usual method of
finishing, by means of Mr. Lauth's discovery.
Persons accustomed to the uses of shafting
in machinery will at once perceive the advan
tages and vast importance of this invention.
The Iron is rolled cold—a matter which has
heretofore been deemed an impossibility, owing
to the nature of the machinery used. The fibre
of .the metal is thus compressed, it is rendered
more tenacious and stronger, and undergoes
change by which it acquires the ring, the flexi
bility, and general properties of steel. The
shaft is turned out highly polished, and capa
ble of withstanding fifty per cent. more lateral
pressure than iron of tho same size prepared
in the common way. The cost of turning adds
largely to the price of shafting, and the coup
ling boxes aro also an additional cost, as they
are, like the shafting, sold at ton cents per
pound. By Mr. Lauth's process shafts of any
length—thirty feet, if required—in a single
piece, perfectly true and smooth, and with a
polish like the finest table cutlery, can bo
turned out in less time than we have been de
scribing it. The importance of this invention
.to those, who use machinery cannot be over
estimated. It will reduce the price of shaft
ing at least one hundred per cent., and can and
will be applied to an almost infinite variety of
useful purposes—such, for instance, s- railroad
axles, cotton and woolen machinery, and all
purposes whore a fine finish is required.
Mr. Lauth applied for a patent both in this
country and in Europe, and for more than a
year past has been making iron by his process,
with great success. The patent was not grant
ed at once, owing to the fact that, other parties.
who had become acquainted with the process,
disputed the priority of the invention with Mr.
Lauth, and a legal investigation of the facts
becime necessary. This has now been had be
fore the proper court at Washington City, the
case being argued for Messrs. Jones Lauth
by George P. Hamilton, Esq.,-of this city, and
on Saturday last the Court endorsed a decision,
which we understand to be final, in favor of
Messrs. Jones & Lauth. Mr. Holt, the Com
missioner of Patents, had previously given his
decision in favor of Messrs. Jones & Lauth's
right to the patent, and from this the opposing
parties took an appeal, upon which this decision
has now been had.
The invention is oneof very great importance,
and has attracted the attention of iron men in
all parts of the world. As a Pittsburgh in
vention, originating with a pittshurgh me
chanic, as well as a matter which must affect,
beneficially, the manufacturing interests of the
*hole country, this patent will prove both a
credit and a profit to our city.

...vstent No family should be without a bottle in the
house, for it is adapted alike to the most tender and del

of men. By having it always on hand, and taking it upon
the first appearance of an attack, you may save yourself
from suffering and expense. ;Niftily deaths from Cholera
