LISHMENT.-.
It is but recently that the hydropathic
system of treatment, originating in Ger
many, has been tested in this country, for
the cure of disease, but it has, in a few
years, gained so much popularity, that.
however skeptical. one is almost compelled
to admit that there is something in the
water-cure which rapidly restores the
invalid to health ; for, whether it be the
strict dietetic regimen observed, and the ne
cessity of observing cleanly habits, which
are the best means of restoring health, vis
itors at water-cure establishments generally
come away re-invigorated and rejuvenated.
One of these useful institutions, known
as the Pittsburgh Water-Cure Establish
ment, is located on the Ohio river, ten miles
West of the city, at Maysville Station, on
the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago
Railroad. It. is well managed, and com
bines superior facilities.
The scenery is grand, varied and enliven
ing. Situated so near a great city, the Cure
is still in the country, surrounded by hun
dreds of acres of native forest. The
beautiful Ohio, with its diversity of inter
esting objects, is in view, in front, and
water craft passing hourly up and down, as
well as the railroad, carrying thousands of
passengers past the door, give life and ani
mation to the scene ; while in the rear, lof
ty hills, deep:ravines, huge rocks, majestic
forest trees, shaded walks, and all that eon'.
Lines to make nature beautiful, gladden tLc
The climate is remarkably healthy, and t
its invigorating influence may be attribub.
no trifling agency in the many remarkah
cures which have been performed at th
establishment. It is entirely free fro
miasmatic influences, and will be a de,it
ble change for those who have been re ,
ing where bilious disea.es aro prevalent.
The Cure is efe3,ily accessible, being on th
lino of one of the loteget riiilroAds iit th
country ; with clo.se connection , every
where, bringing patients from all the !wine .
pal State.: and cities in the Union.
The accommodations for visitors, iu , earch
of either health or retirement. are complete.
The buildings are commodious. well ar
ranged, cool and comfortable. :old will at'
commodate about one hundred. Souu• > cw•
enty-tive patients are now under treatmen:.
During the spring a new building was ailde , l
to the establishment, capable of receiving
fifty visitors.
The Cure is supplied with an abundance of
pure, soft spring water, and elect ro-chemi
ieal baths. A gymnasium and ten pin alley
have recently been erected. and everything
is supplied which can conduce to the com
fort or amusement of the inmates. Should
everything fail, they are within easy re.ich
of the city and its social and intellectual
enjoyments.
The establishment is in charge of Messrs.
Hereford Si Frease. Mr. Hereford, assisted
by his son, is the manager, and studies the
cpmfort of the guests, while Drs. S. and If
Frease, and Mrs. Celia P. Frease, M. D.,
prescribes for the invalid and minister to
their wants. They have an experience of
eight years in conducting Water Care estab
lishments and have treated successfully
hundreds of cases of every variety of dis-
We accepted the hospitality of the pro
prietors on Wednesday evening last, on which
occasion, by way of enlivening the invalid and
amusing the sound of limb, a fancy hop
was improvised. The affair was highly
creditable, and passed MT with satisfaction
to all concerned, particularly the ladies, whn
always enjoy good music, and never object
to a polka, waltz or French four. We can
not help recommending the well, weary, or
affiicted to visit the Water Cure establish
ment at Haysville, and by all means to take
a" pack."
Railroad Companies Repudiating
The trouble in the Erie Railroad Company
is likely to widen. We understand the indis
position manifested by the fourth mortgage
bondholders to come into some arrangement
satisfactory to stockholders and to after credi
tors, has provoked the threat to test the validi
ty of said fourth mortgage ' at law. This is a
very dangerous business, and once begun, its
•end and its effect on all railroad mortgage se
curities might be disastrous in the extreme.
The Journal of C'ontraerce, alblding to this in
timation, says, " Enough of this character has
already been done to frighten capitalists from
making investments in bonds ; cities have de
faulted, and States have repudiated, mostly on
the plea of improper conversion, and now some
informality is to be found in a mortgage, the
moment it is inconvenient to stand by the
pledge there given. Wo warn all these repu
diating gentlemen that they are undermining
their Own security, and if they persevere, will
bring their own house about their ears. Is
tbere no such thing as the sacrednesi; of au-obli
gation? Are we a nation of pettifoggers, for
whom there is no legal restraint, as long as we
can pick a flaw in the the text of our agree
ment? Can no community in all this land be
trusted to stand by their word and fulfil their
agreements, oven though they have sworn to
their own hurt? 'Drive a wagon and team
through the mortgage itself,' will they ? Who
will assume the reins for this act of daring?
Or is it an idle menace ?"
Expatriation In Baden.
The Baden Government has recently made
some declarations regarding the Expatriation
question. It is declared that the Government
of Baden does not require American naturaliz
ed citizens, who have been subjects of Baden to
perform duty there in case they return, even
if they - have emigrated without consent—that
is, if they return merely for a visit. It is pre
, sumed that the Expatriation controversy here,
and the last letter of Gen. Cass, has had a
