OP IDE MOM THOMAS ;NT.EL„of Tarentum Political IntilLgente—;;The 'Suspected Slav- er in the; Harbor of Portland. We published, some days ago, an article from the Portland, Me., Adrertiscr, which drew the attention of the United States au thOritleS to a - snspicious Vessel lying in that port, and .the intimation was thrown out that there was a possibility of said vessel being designed for the slave trade. The article referred to, has brought out: the consignees of the brig Newsboy, in a letter full of indignation., Af ter giving a short history of the brig, they proceed to enumerate her cargo, which ap pears to be "some 70,000 feet of lumber, 60 barrels of flour,. GO barrels of bread, 20 barrels of tar and 20 tierces of rice." Without any design of intimating that the Newsboy has the slightest intention of visiting the coast of Af rica, we must novertheless,be permitted to say 'that her eargo, With the exception of the tar, which would not cost over forty dollars, and an hi the amount of lumber, is very a pretty outfit for a voyage to Congo river, and thence to Cuba. The consignees say that "some" •0,000 feet of lumber is engaged, which means that amount, more or less ; but that bulk of lum ber, together with the tar, would operate as a very good blind untill the vessel was well at sea, when all over the amount necessary for the construction of an extra deck could be very easily passed ever the side. The consignees admit that the Newsboy is a clipper, and very sharp, and that she registers about three hun dred tons. She would, no doubt, make a su perb_ slaver, and if not already designed for the business., the letter of the consignees will probably have the effectof attracting the utten t eon of some of the prominent Republicans to her excellent qualities. for that business. Important Decision. The New York court of common pleas has . recently decided a very knotty and important question. A Mr. John Snook, who for sevei - al years has assumed the (to him) morVeu phonious name of Pile, had some misgivings as to the legality of the change of name, even though, as we are infermed, the En glish Word "pike" is a literal translation of the Flemish or Dutch word "snook," ;or "snook," and to ease his mind he applied to the courts for advice. We learn that '.Judge Daly delivered "an elaborate and learned opinion," the gist of which was, that John Snook is quite at liberty to call himself Johu Pike, if he so please. It does not apper that the interesting fact, hitherto not generally k - nown, that snot& andpike are exactly identical in signitica had any influence on the opinion of the judge. It is a pity, therefore, that M r . Biaooli. did not take a.swider range in search - of ri.new name, as it is somewhat generally I :re - Marked that pike is not much of an ' - ' - improvement on the Flemish patronymic which he desired to abandon. Napoleon's Viaitto England The London Spectator mentions a story that the - Emperor is about ,to visit 'England on an express inNitation from Queen Victoria. THE Journal du Ham corrects the assertion of the London Times that Prince Jerome was suffering from a dangerous attack of internal gout. The Prince has simply peen ill with a fever, and is recovering. Captain Schenley—Bribery and Corrup tion. We copy the following from the Londoi ireekly Times ' Nothing seems so difficult to come at as money. We are all working in one way or other for it ; straining our moscles or racking our brains; runninglabout with the therniom ter at ninety in the shade; foregoing ease and comfort, and encountering danger and difficul ty to get paid at last, perhaps grudgingly or unwillingly, but still toga paid. Lithe midst of all this exceeding toil and anxiety, which beset tho highways of life, we have nothing to do' but to turn into a quiet Parliamenfary borough, and we perceive the object of our unceasing labors, is apparently a drug. We arein a land of Christian benovolenc. The trou ble seems to not be--how to obtain - the money, but how to got rid of it. We have suddenly entered into an English California, where money is to be had fur stooping to pick it up. These halcyon districts are strewed over all parts of the country, and are to be found.atevery point of - the compass. At Dartmouth, at Aylesbury, MC, loucester, at Ashburton and at Huddersfield the most benevolent practices seem to have been common. A man is in distress, and an angel in a woman's form asks if ten, or fifteen, or even twenty pounds are of any use, because, if there are, there is the money. Even law yers become charitable, tenderly inajuire into the wants and woes of unhappy artizans and small traders, or as the more relined desires of those of a higher grade. The air is redolent with bank -notes, fresh and crisp, with no defil - names" or marks 'upon them: Exalting men like George Griffiths of Dartmouth may shake them, in the air, and mysteriously say, " This is what we shall do it with ;" but that proves nothing against the general Fffiilan thropy of the movement. Richard Mitchel more was the subject-of peculiar attention. Ile swears that one Tucker offered to do him good. He merely wanted him to take him seventy-live pounds. Mitchelmore would nut be donegood to—at least to that amount, but took ten pounds.to go away and enjoy a holiday. What amiability! What primitive generosity I A Captain .Bullet', who has- tt,rituite.that sounds formidably,' received forty-flve .bank notes of twenty pounds, each, but he cannot' say what ho did with them. ' He thinks lie can . swear he did net give them' tO 'erection agenti. He is so - benevolent' 'that lie clod not know how he disposed of nine hundred pounds:-4 He gives by ..stellfh. and blushes to find it fame. He is a condutV\pipe for the phi-i lanthrophy -of others. Ho. does not preveri cute, only he does not reply, in a straight forward way ; he does so on principle, because - the committee of the House of Commons that is inquiring into this strange epidemic of, lib erality, he thinks ought to find out the truthfOr themselves. Mr. S. Hayle is - another remark-: ably kind mau, who gave .Captain Bailey a hundred pounds, because ho wished to tmvait. All this uncommon. goodness of disposition -produced, however a fatal result,, for the Ccitp mittee, after a short consnltition, came to tUe: conclusion that the late election for Dartmouth' was void, by reason of bribery and corruption, carried on by the ageets of Mr. Schenleyoatid Mr. Schenley was not duly returned. What a pity thatso much bencyolence and generosity should be thrown away! Those; however, who rceived those twenty pound notes hive v ilie ,consolation of knowing they didall they could —they' tooirthe money and gave-their-votat.- and what more could Mr. Schenley or their. country demand from them. . 7, - • - - • • [Correspondence of the Pittsburgh Post.) The New York Herald, of last Satuaday, contains"a strong leading article, written in the editor's :usual slashing style, recommending Houston totho Democracy us their only salva tion from defeat in ISGO. Some people say that Bennett intended that article to kill the General Off; as he' did Gen. Scott, ‘• Live Oak George," and Gen. Cameron, by damning him with inglorious praise. The President since his return from Bed ford Springs, has taken up his quarters at the Soldiers Homo. Much of his time and labor is taken up with foreign affairs. The condi tion of things in Mexico, are extremely per plexing ; indeed, the same may be said of the South American matters generally, and the labor bestowed on these intricate questions, are more than most of men could stand, but Mr. Buchanan seems to be capable of enduring any amount of that kind of work. I saw him last Saturday, and ho looks as bright and cheerful as one whose hope and faith was strong enough to move a mountain. The suceessorship to the Thorny Chair in the White House, does not appear to trouble him, though it is apparent that he is still determinedly oppia.ed to S. A. Douglas. During the absence of Judge Black, your late townsman, A. B. M'Calmont, is a cting At torney General, For so young small, this may be said to be a very high honor, andso it is ; but nobody deserves it better, he has a clear head. a strong mind, (no objection to strong minded men,) and good legal attainments, which will one day make him a man of murk. The De mocracy of Pennsylvania should foster MeCal wont., and not allow the mousing small beer politicians to undermine and pull him down, as they are in the habit of doing with men whose talents and political integrity is far above their own. The President is desirous to send the Hon. Caleb Cushing,of Massachusetts,to South Amer ica, to straighten up existing difficulties in that region, but Mr. Cushing declines on account of pressing private engagements. The Secretary of the Treasury h; expected back to-day, and Governor Floyd and Attorney General Black will probably be here in the next ton days. The Chiriqui Region. care.,;paaa,,,e of the Now York Tr!bone BOCA DEL TORO, July 'io, 1859. I write to confirm the news of the impor tant discoveries which were announced by the last steamer. The extensive cemeteries of the aboriginies that inclose in their sepulchres such vast treasures are very numerous, for the "Tallinn:mew," who peopled Chiriqui, were numerous and powerful. as well as rich. At the time of their conquest by the Spaniards they comprised nine large ,tribes. It .was custom of the aborigines to bury their valua bles with them... Few of these Indians remain, and these ffffi, now scattered in the mountains of Chiriqui, still preserve thesaine custom. In ono of these cemeteries in the savannas, which I saw, each grave was indicated by a head stone, half buried in the earth. The northern stripe of, this Province wns cc thickly peopled as the southern one, but being now BO densely covered with forests, no one hay yet examined the rich homes of the dead. It would be very easy for me to find them by the data I now have. Two stone figures, repre senting a warrior and a child, :were found in one of these cemeteries, on the northern slope, on the banks of the river called •• Estrels," that empties into the lagoon. I have also Oh tained some vary superior coal from the bor ders of this river. In'My opinion. and I have well studied the stibjeet, the wealth buried in these numerous cemeteries :will create a large emigration; to Chiriqui;'and' the sources whence all the gold was.ObA43,4ted will be discovered by the energies of 'the men'of the North. The history of Spain points to, the grent mine of ‘ . .Tisingal," situ ated in seme part of this country, and there is ne doubt about the auriferous richness of this country. P. and 8., .who were also on the spot, 'confirmed these statements, and concur red with me in the opinion that great and pro fitable gold washings exist. Compared with California and Australia, Chiriqui appears to be admirably situated between two oceans, elliq of access from all parte of the world—its tar bore are fine and its climate healthy. The coal mines, of themselves, will soon become as im portant,as the gold:, Offered for Lease CoLumnus, Ohio; Augnst 16.—Tho Ohio Canal and Western:Reserve Road were offered to-day to the highest bidder for lease for five years, but no, bida-were made. It was degrading the policy of one enlightened and civilized nu- I tion towards another below the conduct of the red „Indians in their woods.. The Indians, when they had smoked the pipe of peace, buried the hatchet; of war, ip; token that they did not in tend to go on alarming each other by prepara tions for war hostilities.
