THE LATEST NEWS BY TEI. E RAPT From Washington. \VAS IIINOTC0;, August 7C.—The extensive machine, blacksmith and sawing shops of the Capital Extension Works were destroyed by fire about half-past three o'clock this morning. The, origin of the fire has not been ascertain ed, but it is supposed to have been accidental. The buildings were of comparatively little value, but the machinery contained in them was very expensive, including the lathe for turning the immense stone columns for the public buildings, powerful' engines and tools, and a large quantity of costly marble, finished and unfinished, has been destroyed. The loss is estimated at from fifty to sixty thousand dollars. There was no insurance on any of it. The New York iferaid, to-day, publishes a list in detail of all the messages sent over the Atlantic Cable during the four weeks it was in working order. The list fills seven columns of that journal, and foots up as follows: Four hundred messages, forty-three hundred and fifty-nine words, and twenty-three thousand two hundred and twenty-one letters.
