KICKED OUT OF PARLIAMENT.
The True Press of this . city was the only
paper yesterday which afforded the public the
. :
benefit of the following item:
CAPT. S6HP.NLEY LT.NSEATE.D.—The L,,ndoO
Times states that Capt. Schenl , •y and Mr. Lea
thern have teen unseated in l' a rii , ,inent, for
corruption at the polls. Toe editor says:.
" Two stern and inexorable c,inmitteas have
passed speedy, judgment, on•• • Mr. Leathern, ,
Mr. Bright's' brother-in-hrw. 'and member for
Wakefield, -and another on Mr. Schenley, of
Dartmouth. We deplore the loss of two such
men to' the Liberal side of the House, eyed
while we are forced to admit that, no doubt,
through being novnces in the art, their friends
have 'rather overdone the thing, in the way of
bribery."
Just to think we aro not to have a speech
from the right honorable member from Dart
inouth,.in Parliament' after all—and that the
Earl of. liard.scrabblet. has been kicked out in,
di;grace,' that he , triay have time for the further
contemplation of-his increased tax roll, and
abreviated „receipts. ~We clip the following
from the London Weekly Times:
I ARTMOUTII ELECTION.
Mr. Lefroy brought up the report of the
committee appointed to try the petition against
the return for the borough of Dartmouth.
The committee reported that E. W. H. Scbenley
was not duly elected to servo in Parliament,
and that thelast election for Dartmouth was
void. They further reported that the said E.
-
w. H; Selainley was by his agents guilty of
bribery paid out of a certain fund, but that it
did nut appear that the legal expenses of the
election were defrayed from that source.
The Rouse rose at six o'clock.
- -
The $lOO,OOO spent to secure'a seat in the
Commons would have repaired a number of
his delapidated-shanties in Pittsburgh and paid
Lis paving tax in Allegheny without forcing
the sale of his valuable estate. The Liberal
side don't suit the Captain, he should quit it.
.
WE notice, with 'regret, a disposition on the
part of journals claiming a Democratic reccird
t) advance, as the chief merit of Stephen A.
Douglas for the Presidency, his antagonism
with the present administration ; they teem
with the praise of one, and abuse of the other,
interwoven in the same articles, as if the pres
ent position of the Senator from Mlinois, was
altogether due to his personal relations with
the President, and- admitted of no wider
range of discussion - . Wed° not care about prob
ing the motives of the editors of these journals
to ascertain just the amount of disappointment
they have suffered at the hands of the execu
tive, or bow much they expect to please their
favorite by this course, but. we hold it to be,
not only unjust, but impolitic. According to
the Philadelphiaress, Mobile Regi.sfrr or
New Orleans True ;Delta, Mr. Douglas has suf
fered personally and politically, many indig
nitiesat the bands of Mr. Buchanan, during
his official career ; if so,. the Senator has set an
example of magnanimity which might be im
itated by his leading friends, who are at pres
ent engaged in the programme for 'O. The
great public care nothing about the personal
relations of men, whilst political difference of
opinion is the unquestioned right of all, and
should not be dwarfed into feuds and angry.
dis'eaSSions about candidates. This applies
with (qua} force td those who claim personal
friendship with, or hold office under Mr. Bu
chanan, who imagine they perform their full
duty in abusing Mr. Douglas, having no other
cause than the antagonistic personal relations
of the two men. All this directs attention
from the true living issues of the moment,
(holies the discussion of principles, and the
bold utterance of the doctrines of the Demo
cratic party, to promote the growth of clans
rallying at the call of some favorite chief
tain. _ .
There appears to be more of hatred to the
President tb an love for the man they would make
President in all this, which will fail to prove an
effective element in the coming struggle. Mr.
Douglas must stand or fall on his own merits ;
we think he has enough to carry him through,
not only at Charleston, but before the country,
lie is firmly seated in the affections of the
people, ho has rendered distinguished services
to his country, and stands to-day one of the
foremost statesmen of the b. 14011. His nomina
tion for the Presidency would be. a tribute to
his great ability, and unwavering courage in
the vindication of Democratic truths—not be
cause of disagreements with Mr. Buchanan
since his advent to the Presidency.
oun brother-in-taw of the Dispatch is mis
taken, if he supposes we wish to advocate the
claims of " old Buck and little Dug" (as be ir
rovontly styles them) for the Presidency at the
same time. Mr. Buchanan deprived us of our
crisis, and the country of a candidate, in his
celebrated TtPCandless letter. Ho was our
candidate until he cruelly and suddenly forsoolf
us, as we should have had him fairly on the
track in less than a fortnight without the aid
of the Now York-Her a / 4 i, and so fur in ad
vance of all comers, as to have defied competi
tion. If he thinks ho has 'served his country
enough, wo have no disposition to push .the
Matter further, and therefore let him olttit
his own particular requesC We hope to be
believed now, when we assert that we are
not for Mr. Buchanan for the Presidency,
and we are not to bo forced from this position,
whether,, ho . writes .another letter to Mr.
ilreandlOss tilting back his first epistle or not.
The ground is cleared and being plowed pre
paratory Ur' a new crop, and if we choose to
" hoe a row," on our own account, we hope to
bo permitted ti do - . so, without any more ma
-licious flings from the Dispatch about old Buck
Or little Dug, and ourselves.

drank it in his time. It haabeen banded doWn
to us, and is as popular as it was centuries ago.
It is believed to be-far-superior as a beverage
to distilled liquors, not leaving their pernicious
effects behind. llogarth, in his Beer Alley
and Gin Lane, shows us the great superiority
of stout, ablHrdied,lrerover alcoholic drinks,
which had,'in' ii . 4gUn 'to become
popular. But the solid Britons of those days
"eschewed thin potations ;" among Shake
speare's creations; .Falstaff the Great drank only
sack, and " honest Iago" consigned small

"Scottish Ploughboi sang of ‘• Scottch

"Thou clears the head o' doited Lear,
Thou cheers the heart o' droopingeare:
Thou strings the nerves o' labour sair.
Ate weary toil;
Thou even brightens dark despair

Every one will ‘rementhe'r "John Barley
corn'; as a picture of burly strength and sub
stantial solidity, and Burn's "happy ale" is
the very symbol of good fellowship.
The manufacturt'of this highly-extolled bev
erage has been brought to great perfection in
thii country, and Pittsburgh ale has a reputa
tion extending through the length and breadth
of the land ; it has even been thought to rival
the celebrated London and Edinburgh ales,
which aro exported to all parts of the civilized
world.
We have fine facilities here for making a
choice article, and our manufacturers have
taken Advantage of them. Prominent among
these is Gee. W. Smith, who has been
engaged in brewing in this city for twenty-five
years, and the productof whose breweries stands
unexcelled: On Monday we bad the pleasure
of examining his establishment on the o,.rnor
of Pitt street and Duquesne Way. the eldest

with a large, cool cellar underneath.
We will now briefly 11 , critm, the pr.
ale brewing, which, though apparently simple
in itself, is one requiring not only great -kilt
and experience, but constant attention durim:
the entire process. The malt, which is

called " wort," passes it into the •• hop ha. 1.,"
a large square, sliallvw vessel, also -ul.l.lil•d
with a false bottom, through which the wort
passes, leaving the hops behind. The wort
now flows through pipes to two large coolees,
of similar construction with the hop-ba. Is,
where it spreads over a large surface, and is
exposed to the air to cool. The cooling pro.
cesaia facilitated by four large and powerful
fans, wnicb are kept constantly in motion
The cooling occupies' from two to thirteen
hours, according to the state of the atmosphere,
being conducted as rapidly as possible.
From the coolers, on the withdrawal of plug ,
in the bottom, the wort passes through pipes
to ,the cellar, where are placed four immense
fermenting tuna, capable of containing eighty
barrels each, in which it is collected. Here the
primary process a fermentation takes place. the
tuns being only half filled to allow the for

mains in these tuna varies from twenty-four
hours to a week, when it is again carried by
pipes into the "working casks," which bold

these vessels for a few days, during which the

The ale is bunged down in about ton day ,
from the time the malt goes into the ma sh

The stook collar is capable of containing two
thousand barrels of ale, and there are also
three others of equal capacity, combined, in
which the ale made at this brewery is stored,

annual product of the brewer;, which is in

suspended during June and July, is from

kind, with none of the modern innovations,
