' :"~ ~. 9` PITTSBURGH POST. [From the Dublin Univer, ity Maanzinej THE LAST VICTIM OF THE SCOTTISH MAIDEN A Scottish maiden! What a pleasant visioudo not these words call up. Who that has ever kept his twelfth of August on the northern moors could fail to be reminded by them' of some bright-eyed Highland lassie whom he has met at early dawn of day crossing the mountain stream barefoot, with her plaid thrown over her fair hair, and her clear voice singing out an old sweet ballad Of her native land; or happily, if he had an cutrie to the homes of the Scottish aristocracy, they will bring before him some yet fairer picture of a pure pale face where eyes of a blue, tender as the morn ing sky, spoke of a noble and truthful soul within; and he has learnt to love the race that once had such deadly feuds with his Saxon ancestry, because of the "glamour " cast around him by the golden-haired daughters of the land. But very different is the real picture of that Seottish maiden of whom we arc about to speak; nor was she any vision of the fancy, but a terrible reality, whom all men knew and feared throughout. broad Scot laud, two hundred years ago. A dark and stern lady was she truly, and one who brooked no rivals—fur they whom she had once embraced were never clasped to mor tal heart figaiu ; and the lovers whom she pillowed on her bomm, slept a sleep that kneW no waking. Few there were, even of the bravest, who did not shudder some what as they saw her keeping her un changing watch through storm and sun. shine, beneath the shadow of old St Giles. the principal church of the Northern cap ital ; and oftentimes, when they saw how the ground beneath her feet Iris stained with blond, they muttered buses on the "'untidy maiden," (hat had done to death so many a gallant scot. Vet to some this ghastly'lady (which was none other than the public guillotine) appeared to have attractions, such as a briHit eyed damsel would have envied ; for it is recorded of the noble 11lar -91.11S of Argyle, the last who had died in her embrace, when our story efollllllel/Ce:l, that he ran ease ly up th e steps, and ex claimed as he laid his head on the block : '' This is the swe , dest maiden I have eve r kissed." .• TH. , saying of his was often cited, and the world wondered what hid den pang had so darkened life for the gal- laut noble, whose homage was courted by the fairest ladies, that he should die with words oh' such hitter meaning on his bps ; but when, some few years later, the maid en pressed with her cold hand the tip oat of him who proved to be her latest victim, the stratwe and tragiccireutustanee Of his death obliterated all recollections of the Marquis and his (15 ing words, It happened! 5.DC711.:11". in 101 1 ,411, these two, the Lord of Argyle, and Ken elm Hamilton wbo succeeded him on the block, had be e n in life the deadliest VllO - and by a peculiar chain of circum stances, which we shall now pi..,,ecd to de tail, the death of the one caused that al the other. It 1V:19 .11)011t a month after the execution of the Marquis, that llamilton,.whose race, so clm.ely allied to the kings of Scotland, ices even prouder than Argyle's, found compelled by political business, to pass a night in the little town of fnverary, close to which stood the magnificent castle of the 'same name, which had been the her itafie of his dead rival. Never, perhaps, did any one approach that beautiful spot with 71-eater ill-will than Kenelm Hamilton ; he was a young man of peculiarly fiery and impetuous dis position, of whom it was often said that his love and his hatred were alike to be dread -td, so ardent and passionate was be in either; he was the sceand son of that noble family of Handlions, between whom and the Argyles there had been a deadly fend for many generations past. Never, how ever, had it burnt more fiercely than iu the time of which we write, when the fam ilies had been represented by the Marquis who had just been compelled to lay his lof ty head at the maiden's feet, and Kenelin, with his wild and angry temper ; for his elder brother was an idiot, who bore the tinnily title, hut lacked the wit to defend their honor when assailed. Deep had been the hate between Argyle and Hamilton, which the new shed blood of the fhriner had not availed to quench ; for, in addition to the old elan feud, there was a private quarrel between them whientad fearfully embittered their traditionary hatred. The Marquis of Argyle had been betrothed al most from boyhood to his cousin, the lady Ellen Graham, and although their engage ment had been a matter of family arrange- I ment, he loved her well and truly : not so the lady, however. She had not been con- suited wheit she was bound, while yet, a child, to the Manfais, and with the true feminine spirit of contradiction, she resolv ed to chose for herself, and accepted the addresses of Keneltu Hat - whoa, who, by some unlucky .31unee, had fallen it) love with his rival's bride Their wedding was even now tired to take place in a few months, and this eircutnstance no doubt, explained the last words of Argyle, which were destined to be the means of one day brim - rim , his enemy to the arms Of this salet• cruel maiden, whom he himself had embra ced with so numb fervor. And now the recollection of that last bloody scene was doubtless, heavy or; the heart of Ilamilhin as he rode down the path which led to In verary Castle and the little village that lay at its foot, It was a cold and gloomy wit.ter ni2ht : the darkness was intense, and the wild north wind went shriehim , and howling throw-di the pass as if it bore upon its wings the souls of those who had expired in some great agony, while the dark Scotch firs :toed up like spectres among the bleak gray rocks. Truly it was an evening on which the stoutest heart might gladly seek a shelter, and Hamilton was fain, though sorely against his will, to rest for the night in the domain of his enemies. This had been no part of his intention when he set out on his journey ; he had then been accompanied by two of his retainers, and and he designed to have passed at a little distance from Inverary early in the day, and to have lodged for the night in a castle at so-,e distance, and belonging to a kins man of his own ; but unhappily that morn ing one of his guides had been thrown front his horse and injured su severly that his life was despaired of. Some hours were spent in conveying, the wounded man to a resting place; and Hamilton,' wllO9O mission ad mitted of no delay, was obliged to leave him in charge of his comrade and push on his road, although the short December day was already closing in when he started He rode on as rapidly as he could, but the darkness soon became so impenetrable that he repeatedly lost his way; and when, at last, the lightf4 of Invcrary gleamed through the .driving mist and rain, he felt that it had become a matter of necessity that lie should rest there for the night, as his jaded horse was stumblin ,, at every step from sheer fatigue. In these turbulent times, when every man's hand was uganst his fellow, there would have been considerable risk in Ham• ilton venturing into Inverary, and espe cially this particular Hamilton, had he been known; but Benelm trusted that the faction, that even the door of the inn wits shut—a sufficient proof that no guests were expected at the " Argyle Arms" that night. The Landlord, a Campbell, of course, and as sturdy a Scot as one would wish to see, himself, camp to the door to welCome the stranger, and after ..endicig, his tired horse to the stable, he ushered hint into the huge stone kitchen, briefly remarking, that he must be content with such cheer as the family provisions could afford, for that lie little expected any visitors on a night so " uncanny.",' Hamilton assured him he was nut dispo se.l to be fastiduous and having thrown of; his drippin g mantle and disencumbered himself of his heavy riding-ink ts,' ; he sat down on the oaken settee opposite the huge fireplace; while Campbell wont out to sec that the horse was attended to. Left to himself, Kenelm began to around him, and he was much struck by the scene which presented itself within the room. The huge fireplace, which was filled up with wood, sent a bright and ruddy glow over the whole room, and lighted up with a brilliant gliire the fig ure of a young- woman, who sat. at one cor ner of the attnile hearth, and who was the only other occupant of the apattment be sides himself. There was something very peculiar in the appearance of this girl, which riveted Hamilton's in spite of himself. She sat perfectly inotionie“, ex cepting for the rapid mop einem of 1111 tin gers, which she was cid ith 0, 111:f im k(611 ; her plaid thrown b.ck from her head left her pale 1.:101` •w, which was in:irked by a singulaily and yet by no means vacant ex pre:J.imi This was caused in part. no doubt, by the fixed stare of her large Itch never moved in tlo•ir sock, ti i cned with a sparkle of hf, ; it Wa , I`, idcat thatshe was stone-Wind, while flier, lurhef certain lines natiod the thin compressed which seem to indicate that she ha I - Al toe acuteness, amountin: , , ahno-t to curthin whioh ()furl ellarar!erizes per-;•01, thou flirted.
