Puiva - re is nothing more
pleasing to the eye than a well regulated flower
yard or garden. In passing through the city we
often see large yards find gardens attached to
dwellifigs, barren and uncultivated, which, at
a trifling cost, could be rendered pleasant to
the eye. Nothing adds more to the interest of
is beautiful - flower garden than a profusion of
vines and creeping plants, a handsome arbor
eructed nt theentrance of a gatiden,,,ver which
is trained,in systematic order, the honey-suckle,
or the ever acceptable grape vine. Such a
structure as this not only adds to the beauty of
the garden, but it serves for a pleasant retreat
during the sweltcrirg days of July or August.
Every sitifi loves to see and taste of the rich
p'erfume of ,; the lilac or the ' wistaria; from
whose every twig hang in countless numbers
thousands of bouquets, redolent with beauty and
fragrance. And the clematis! how delicious
the perfume when the blossoms are disturbed
by' a soft spring breer,O. The• senses become
infused with- a dreamy stupor, from whirl, the
recipient seems loth to wake. What is there
more pleasant than to sea the majestic "ivy
gteer," with its thick. broad andglossy foliage,
verdant at :di seasons, when all other garden
tiesatatione present nothing 'but' leafless stems
grid branches A well regulated garden is
sure evidence that the owner is possessed of
those line qualities that aro wont to adorn the
mind. As we have said before, the expense to
ay o ut and improve a garden is a trifle when
compared to the gratification which one enjoys
when nature bids flowers to expand and give
their fragrance to the winds. Beautify your
'dwellings by improving your gardens.
OLD LETTETIS.—There is a pleasure in read
ing old letters, almost as great as that of meet
. ric rim/ conversing with the triends by whom
lefray 'Were written. viii lettere are the land
mark; of our journey ahrough life. They tell
at what time occurred the brightest, and at
what the - saddest events in our history—when
formed the friemlshlps, which, through
every vicissitude of our fortune linve continued
'frichringeahle, arid when those which were
nipped in the early leaf, or which ripened, de
cayed and are forgotton. They point us in
living characters to the memory of those who
have passed away from this world, and set be
fore us all the amiable and endearing qualities
with which they were adorned. By means of
old letters, we read, in manhood, the gay and
jocund feats of boyhood : and when age has
!aid its withering hand upon our faculties, it
Mil 4clignrs us - to retrace, tr the epistles of
rirailhood, this scenes and events which charac-.
terized the active part of our life.
To those Who would treasure up the series of
events by which each year and day are in some
way distinguished—to those who delight to
call up in distinct review the companions who
acted with them in life's uncertain race, and
whose various fortunes they would wish to re
member —to all, indeed, whose condition in
life has engaged them in epistolary correspon
dence, whether of a friendly, lirerary, or mer
cantile nature—we would ricommend the
preservation of old letters. They are faithful
monitors which , -teach volarrvz of wisdom;
and therefore, we say _re old, ct:ter.
`Viii DON'T You Lcait c 1 . 1110161: ?—This

..dehei he could make
himself useful either as a clerk or salesman, put
the interrogatory to him which we have placed
as the caption of this article, The reply was
that a trade was not so respectable as a mer
cantile occupation. Under this delusive idea,
our stores are crowded with young men who
have no capacity for business, and who, be
cause of the fancied respectability of doing
nothing, waste away their minority upon sal
aries which cannot possibly liquidate their ex
penditures.
Late, too hats in life, they discover their error,
and, before they reach the age of thirty, many
of them look with envy upon the thrifty me
chanic, whom, in the days of their boyhood,
they were accustomed to deride. The false
views of respectability which prevail ih the
,;•i-meant fashionable society of the present
,my, have ruined thousands of young' men, and
will ruin thimsands more.
rOB 4 ONING BY BEI.L.A.DONI4,I' OR OPIUM.—
Opium and belladonna are each poisonous nar
cotics, and mutually produce fatal effects when
they have entered the circulation in excessive
quantities. Either one of these drugs will al
lay excitement of the brain when given sepa
rately, but when given together they will not.
It is said in cases of poisoning by opiurn, bella
donna may be administered as the antidote.
Even when the poisoned subject cannot swal
low, the belladonna may be safely and timely
introduced beneath the shin. Conversely, in
cases of poisoning by belladonna, opium may
be used.
CARRIAGES Ali'D BUGGIES.—Mr. Joseph
White, long known to our citizens as a menu
lecturer of carriages, buggies, barouches and
light vehicles generally, has now on hand, at
his factory near Lawrenceville, a fine stock of
every description of the above-mentioned arti
cles, made of the best material, and in the
most substantial and durable manner, which
he will sell low. Ho has also on hand a nuns
- tier of second-hand buggies, carriages and ba
rouches, which will be sold at extremely low
figures. His shop is on the Lawrenceville
road, near the toil-gate, directly on the line of
the Passenger Railway, which will pass by his
door. Call and examine his stock.
SUDDEN DEATH 1 , 11031 APOPLEXY.—Mr.
Charles M. Robinson, a well known citizen of
Allegheny, son of Gen. Wm. Robinson, died
,ildenly on Wednesilay night, at his father's
residence, as is supposed of apoplexy. He had
been in bad health recently, but was not seri
ously ill being able to attend to his business.
On Wednesday evening he was in this city,
and Teturned home about nine o'clock. He re
tinid to his room, and a member of the family,
going up soon after, found him sitting in anhair
insensible. Physicians were called in, who
pronounced him dead. Mr. Robinson was about
thirty-five, unmarried, a gentleman of fine ed
ucation, and highly esteemed by a large circle
of acquaintances.
. ANDREW WARNER and Isaac Crow was
held to bail by Alderman Rogers, yesterday,
on cross suits for assault and battery.
The Press.
We every-'day.hear of the power of the
press, and the great influence it wields, but
we do not remember to have seen it better
described than in the following, from a
poem entitled the " Rural Editor,^ by James
burners, Esq., 'of the Mahoning (Ohio) Reg
ister :
Where it is free. the people will he free .
Where It is pure, the people will be pure;
Where shines its light, there liberty shall be;
Where it stands firm, Were freedom shall endure
In the great march of mind it lends the van ;
The guard of public right, the friend of man.
Though humble tellers, they are net the least
Who now the seed and garner for the feast;
By little means the noblest ends are gained,
By small advances viotories attained. .
0, maract roams ye who guide the press,
Though slow the progress, sure will be success.
Patient in labor, strong in hope; in faith
Outreaghing titne, and circumstance, and death.
13e yours the aim, by heaven at first designed:
To raise to higher range of thought the mind :
Building amid the Hoods of ',Dial. life.
The storms of passion and the waves of strife,
A fairer island In each human soul,
Where Love shall dwell:anti Virtue have control
An Eden blesaed• and fairer than the
By poets sung. by prophet lips fortold.
The home of litnoveriee. Religion's shrine.
Where God may reign, and Man become divine.
POUNDED SWINE is the latest novelty which
Chief of Police Hague has served up to the re
porters and this public ; for almost " before thin
peep of day," on Thursday, a lar g e force, in
cluding the night watch, day police, and a
force of Teutonic assistants, who believed that
"to the victors belong the spots," started out
on a tour, and perambulating the highways
and by-ways of the city, stick in hand, areused
from their peaceful slumbers hordes of the
porcine nuisances which infe,t the streets, big
pigs and little pigs, and. although some few of
the favored ones, with greased tails and bides,
managed to escape, marched a goodly number
of them, between two and three hundred, to
the shambles, located on the corner of Pourth
and Grant street, the old tiregon lot " hav
ing been enclosed with a high fence to an,wer
the purpose, and there placed them in durar, ,, •
vile, not to be released until their respective
owners came- forward, proved property, paid
charges, and took them away—the - charges, -
under:an antiquated city ordinance, being one
dollar per head, the penalty inflicted for allow
ing the grunters to run at large at unlawful
time-5 and seasons, which a number of the
aforesaid owners, preferring to liquidate rather
titan lose their property, paid, picking out their
porkers, and reclaiming them from their thral
dom, in the accomplishment of which many
ludicrous sconces ensued between than proprie
tors, and Mr. Barnhill, the Mayor's clerk, who
presided in the capacity of Cerh'rnsattlegate
of the pound, collecting the fine. as the pig, were
taken away, and regulating the line aecordii.g
to the size of the pig, being governed by a
sliding scale of about "6u ponce a pound . "
The pound was surrounded by a crowd of in
guiding visitors during yesterday. We did
not see the local or the among thou,
but as he has recently, edified ua with sundry
discourses on skullology and mebiprology, he
will doubtless tavor us with di,Cflrit, 1)11 the
no less interesting therm of swineology, which
we are informed is a in:).st interesting study,
especially if the stillest be first weep of its
walloWirig pfoclivities. A number of the
porcine unfortunates, antiquated and juvenile,
remain incarcerated, no deliverer having yet
appeared. Their fate is in deplorable one, as
to-morrow, when the " last scene of this
strange, sad. eventful history" trill close, they
are, by order of the Chief of Police, to be
brought under the hammer and sold to the
lowest bidder, the implement mentioned being
very appropriately employed in the finale to
this pounding process.
ANOTHER, BOAT RACE.-A race is to come
off this evening, at six o'clock, over what is
now known as the Belvidere course, (the boat,
starting below that hotel, running to theSharps
burg bridge and returning.) for ft purse of
thirty dollars, between the two-oared boat•
"Flirt" and "Leopold Sabi, Jr." Messrs. .1.
B. Reibiti;er, he aitist, and Alexander 3lurray
row' in the Flirt, and fl Vierbeller, Jr.. and
Nathan Bernhard, in the SOIL The crews and
boats are said to be pretty equally matched,
and the contest will be a lively one. We ex
pect to see a large attendance at the Belvidere.
AN old gun barrel, with a bore capable of
taking an ounce, ball, was found the other day
near Clarkson, Columbiana county, Ohio. It
is supposed to have been lost by one of the
four htindred and eighty men. who, under the
command of Colonel Crawford, in 1782, started
from the west bank of the Ohio river on their
expidition against the Indians, which resulted
so disastrously to that brave officer and his
men.
ATTEEPTED SMCIDE AT ./011NsTOWN.—A
Mrs. Doran, residing in the vicinity of the
Cambria Iron Works, Johnstown, attempted
to drown herself in the canal nt that place, on
Thursday night of last week, but was seen and
raceme The attempt was occasioned, it is
said, by the dissipated habits of her husband,
whoM silo had met a short time previous with
a conipanion v who insulted her.

seems to be attracting considerate attention,

ClLArmnof Faann.—On IVednesday, "Wm.
Hamilton wes before Alderman Donaldson,
charged with having procured from .1. C.
Jardine, a country storekeeper, a coat worth
sixteen dollars, by representing that money
was due him from his employer& The matter
was compromised, Hamilton keeping the coat,

PETER SINCL.AIR, the great Scotch temper
ance'.reformer, who created a sensation last
winter, is to return in October next, and re
main for acme weeks.. He has a good field to
work in, as we have amongst us many (lava
tedly, attached to the bottle, whom, if he ro
claims, he will indeed work miracles.
THE PEACH CROP.—For the information of
all good housewives we would say that the
peach crop will probably be heavier than for
several years past, both in New Jersey and
Delaware. A district of three square miles in
Mercer county will, is is said, yield twenty
thousand baskets, from twenty-two thousand
trees in bearing order.
WE noticed some days ago the fact that a
new counterfeit five dollar note on the Harris
burg Bank bad made its appearance. This
counterfeit appears to be widely circulated,
and we sea that a number of arrests havo been
made in Harrisburg and vicinity fur passing
them.
PITTSBURGH. FRIDAY MORNING, AUGUST 12, 1859.
A Model Hotel.
The Scott House, at the corner of Duquesne
Way and Irwin streets, is such an institution
as does credit to our city. We are particularly
favored here with good hotels, but the univer
sal testithony of travelers is that the Scott
House is not surpassed by any. It is in a
healthy, pleasant location, retired, cool and
comfortable. It is away from the "noise and
confusion" incident to the great business thor
oughfares, and affords a fine view of the Alle
gheny and Ohio rivers. The rooms are large,
airy, convinient, clean, and elegantly furnished,
and the table is well supplied, not only with the
choice delicacies, but the substantials of the
season, and he who cannot relish such faro us
is placed bofore him in the dining room of the
Scott House, must have a dainty, epicurean
taste, indeed. The servants are polite and at
tentive, and the hotel is furnished with all the
appliances which can contribute to the comfort
or enjoyment of the guests sojourning there.
Su complete are all the arrangements that
guests always leave the house satisfied, and
generally return to it on their next v isit. The
proprietors are Messrs. Marker & Graham.
Mr. B. I). Marker is a gentleman of large ex
perience in the hotel business, which he thor
oughly understands. lie is well known in
Western Pennsylvania, having fora time been
proprietor of the "Marker House,"
Ho has many friends, all of whom snake
it a point to stop with him while here. Mr.
Thomas Graham is an old resident of Pitts
burgh, is thorough-going business man, prompt,
energetic, competent and honorable, qualifica
tions which adrnirahly tit bins for the position
he has assumed. Taking the hotel all in all,
it may be called a model for imitation, and tc.
such, wo commend it to the attention of our
readers, and the traveling.

Arrival of the Steamer Fulton.
NEW YORK, August 11.—The steamer Ful
ton, which left Cowes on the evening of the
27th ult., arrived here this morning. She
brings one hundred and thirty passengers, and
reports having passed, on the 27th of July,
ships Mercury and Wurtemberg, going to
Havre ; also the steamship Vanderbilt. The
Fulton's advice:, are not so late as those fur
nished by telegraph to Halifax, but her papers
are, one day later than have yet been received.
The advices from Paris indicate unpleasant
feelings towards England. An article in the
Moi,itenr, discrcalitim , ° the rumored probability
of an accord between France and England on
the question of the Congress, and a general
disarmament had produced a painful im
pression.
The London Herald's Paris correspondent
says that the banding together of France, Rus
sia, and Austria, and the immense naval prep
arations of France, renders its difficult to dis
believe the universal report of a greet blow
being contemplated against England. This was
written previous to the more pacific action of
the French Emperor.
The French steam navy is to he increased to
one hundred and fifty men-of-war, exclusivo of
-events-two transports.
The St. Petersburg papers publish the treaty
between Russia and Chinn, which has been
ratified by the two Emperors. It grants leave
to Russia to send ambassadors to Pekin, prom
ises protection to Christian missionaries, and
nuthorizos a monthly' mail between Kiaeht
and Pekin.
