termaster General's Office until 12, M., on the Ist day of
October next, for the transportation of military supplies
during the year 1803 and 1861, on the following route. •
1. From Forte Leavenworth and Riley in the Terri
tory-of Kansas,Trom Fort Laramie, in the Territory of
Nebraska, or from any point on the west bank of the
Missouri river north o 1 Fort Leavenworth and south of
latitude 42 deg. north at which a depot may be establish
ed, to the posts which are now or may be established in
the Te m tory of Nebraska south of lab tude 44 de. noth,
in Oregon south of latitude 44 deg. nort and - east of
longitude 114 deg west, and in the Territory of Utah
north of latitude 40 degrees north and east of longitude
114 deg. west.
2 From Forts Leavenworth and Riley in the Territo
ry of Kansas, and from the town of Kansas in the State
of Missouri, to Fort Union in the Territory of New Mex
ico, or to any other depot that may tie designated in that
Territory.
3. From Fort Union, °ranch other depot as may be des
ignated in the Territory of New Mexico, to the posts or
depots that are or may be established in the Military
Department of New Me.xico, except Forts Bliss and
Fillmore.
The weight to be transported each year will not be leas
on either of the routes than one hundred thousand
pound routes more on rental than ten millions of pounds,
and on 2 and 3 than two millioas five hundred
thousand pounds each. •
Proposals will state the rate per hundred pounds per
hundred miles for whieh the transportation will be per
farmed on each route in each month of the year, and
may be made for all the routes collectively, for any two
of them, or for each route separately.
Bidders will give their names In full as well as their
places of residence, and be prepared to execute bonds
with good security in such an amount as the Quarter
master General may determine.
Contractors must be in readiness for service by the
Ist day of January, 1860; and as transportation may be
demanded at any time for the whole weight to be-trans
ported during the year on all or either of the routes,
they will be required to have places of busines °earn
ems at or in the vicinity of Fort Leavenworth, Fort Lar
amie, and Fort Union, or other depot in New _Mexico, at
which they may be communicated with promptly and
middy.
Each proposal must be accompanied by a guarantee,
signed by three or more persons known or sausfactorily
certified to the Quartermaster General, setting forth that
if the party proposing shall be awarded the 'contraet,
they will enter an obligation for its faithful performance.
Proposals will be endorsed as follow!, Proposals for
Army , 'Pransportation, and none will be entertained un
less they fully comply with all the stipulations set forth
in this advertisement_

furnishing and delivering, free of all cost and risk to the
United States, at the following navy-yards:

tinctly in separate otters for the beef and for the pork,

Both the beef and pork must be salted with at least
Nesttat bushel of Turk's Island, Isle of May, Key
solar. Onondaga solar, or St. salt; and the beef
must have five ounces of flue pulverized saltpetre to each
barrels exclusive of a pickle, to be made from fresh water
Si. strong as salt will make it, and must be perfectly
bright and clear.
Each barrel must contain full MO pounds net weight
of beer or pork, and no excess of weight, in either article
will be paid for.
The barrels must be entirely new, and be made of the
best Seasoned
beehart of white-oak staves and headings;
the staves to not less than five-eighths of an inch
thick, and the headings not less than three-fourths of
an inch thick; they must Ae three-fourths hooped over,
including the iron hoops, with the best white-oak or
hickory hoops, and each barrel must have on it tot:triton
hoops, viz: one of one and a half inch to width on each
bilge, and one of one and an eighth inch in width on each
chime, and each to be of one-sixteenth of an inch thick.
Each Darrel must be of the internal capacity of thirty-two
gallon.. and the iron hoops must be well painted with
red lead.
Each barrel must be branded by burning on its head
"Nary Beef," or •• Navy Pork,"as the case may be, with
I the contractor's name and the year when packed, and I
weight; and shall also be branded on the bang stave with
the letter B. or P., as the ease may be. I
The beef and pork will, unless otherwise directed by
the chief of this bureau, be inspected by the inspecting
° fa cers a t, the respective navy-yards aforesaid, and by
some "sworn inspector of salted provisions,^ who will I
be selected by the respective commanding officers; but
their charges for such inspections must be paid by the ,
respective contractors, who must likewise have the bar
rels put in good shipping order, to the .ratisfiaction of
the commandants of 'the - respective :navy-yards afore-
said, after inspection, and at their own expense,
Two or more approved sureties in a suit: equal tisone
half the estimated amount of the contractwill be requir
ed, and twenty per centum in addition will be withheld
from the amount of each payment to be made, as collat
eral security for the due and faithful performance of the.'
respective contracts, which will on no account be paid
until the contracts are complied with mall respects; and
is to be forfeited to the United States in the event of
;.failure to complete the deliveries within the prescribed
period. In case of failure on the pert of the contractor
to deliver all or any of the beef or pork above mention
ed, of the quality and at the time and places above pro
vided, the contractor will forfeit and pay to the United
States, as liquidated damages, a sum of money equal to
twice the amount of the contract.price to be paid incase
I of the actual delivery thereof; which liquidtded damages
may be recovered from time to time as they may accrue.
Payment will be made by the United States at the periods
above specified. (excepting the twenty per centum to be
withheld until the completion of the contract, as before
stated,) after the said beef and pork shall have been in
spect.] and received, and bills for the same shall have
been presented to the navy agents, respectively, duly
approved by the commandants of the respective navy
yards, according to the terms of the contract,

Bidders whose proposals are accepted (and none oth
ers) will be forthwith notified, and as early as practicable
a contract will be transmitted to them for execution,
which centrect must be returnedto the bureau within
ten days, exclusive of the time required for the regular

A record, or duplicate of the letter informing a bidder
of the acceptance of his propmal, willbe deemed - a, non
tkailion thereof; within the - meaning of the act of late,
and has bid will be made and accepted in conformity
with this understanding.
Every otter made must be accompanied (as directed
in the sixth section of the act of Congress making ap
propriations for the naval service for 1840-'47, approved
loth of August, 1840) by a written guarantee, signed by
one or more responsible persona, to the effect that he
or they undertake that the bidder or bidders will, if tits
or their bid be accepted, enter into an obligation within
ten days, with good and sufficient sureties, to furnish the
article proposed.
This guarantee must be accompanied by the certifi
cate of the United Staten district judge, United States I
district attorney, or navy agent, that the guarantors are
able to make good their guarantee,
No proposal will be considered unless accompanied by
such guarantee.
• The bidder's name and residence, and the name of
each member of the firm, where a company otters, with
the Christian names written in full, must be distinctly
stated.
Under the joint resolution of Congress, approved 27th
March,lBs4, "all bids for supplies of provisions, cloth
log, and small stores for tne use of the navy, may bo re
jected at the option of the department, if made by one
not known as a manufacturer of, or regular dealer in, the
article proposed to be furnished, winch fact, or the. re
