The Monument .;to the Pilgrim Fathers.
The National Monument, in memory of the
Pilgrims at Plymouth, is really to, be built.
The corner stone was laid on Tuesday, - with
imposing ceremonies, on an eminence, half
mile from the rock, on which the. Mayflower
band first stepped. Ten thousand persons - were
assembled to witness the ceremony. The
principal addresses were by Richard -Warren, .
Esq., President of the Pilgrim Society of New
York, by Governor Banks, and, by several of
the otheriGovernors of New England.
The monument will be 150 feet in height.:

posit, covering thirty-two square miles, of the
richest caolin in the world, fel' the manufacture
of porcelain ware. It is of all colors, red,
green, and white, and ho wishes to direct the
attention of those who understand the manu
facture of ware to the deposit. The landenti be
cheaply purchased, and capital can be supplied
for the skilful mechanic who wishes to embark
in the manufacture of American porcelain
ware. They have also abundance of coal and
wood, and the deposit lies on both sides of the
Memphis and Charlestown Fthead, andon
the Tennessee river and Bear Creek, so that no
difficulty would be experienced in sending the
product to market. Those interested can ob
tain further information by addressing as
above.
Sacredness of Sunday.
In these latter days, no inconsiderable
amount of piety and pharisaism is expended in
laudations of the "holy Sabbath." To do
otherwise than observe the day in the good old
puritanical mode, is thought to bo next, to the
unpardonable sin. And yet the usages of the
church, from time out of mind have been con
trary to the notions of our latter day SE
The following references to high cecle,lastical
authorities, prepared for immediate use by the
New England Spiritualist, will be found 'in
teresting to all who are strongly inclined to the
folly of straining at a gnat, and swallowing a
camel:
1. St. Chrysostorn, whose prayer is read
every Sunday in all Episcopal churches, says :
•• After the congregation is dismissed, every
man may apply himself to his lawful business."

2. St. Athananius says;" We keep no Sah- '
bath as the ancients did, except an eternal Sab

not for corporal circumcision--no more do we;
nor for the observation of Sabbaths—no more

keeps the Sabbath savors of the flesh ; but to
savor of the flesh is death."—De Spir. et Lit.,
c. xtv.
5. Calvin says :—By changing the day, and
yet attributing tothis day when changed the
same sanctity which the Jews did to their Sab ,
baths, we retain the same typical distinction of
days as had place among the Jews., Those
who now cling to them go twice as far as did
the Jews themselves, in the gross and carnal su

abolish Judaism, but merely to put it off for

reation on a Sunday than you might have ;
and if the railway enables the peOple in the
great towns to get out into the country on a
Sunday, I should think it a very great good."

The recent letter of President Buchanan to
Judge McCandless, of your city, declining to
- be - a - candidate for the succession in 18GO, open ,
a wide field of operations for the various aspi
rants for that high position, and they and their
friends seefn to be fast :occupying the ground.
I regret the determination of the President, but
coincide with ydnr ;opiniciri; namely, that the
contingency, may possibly arise that his selec
tion would be necessary to promote the welfare
and interests of theemintry, as well as to frater
nizo the conflicting elements of the party. That
his record in office has been and is a pure and
eminently patriotic and himest one, his candid
political o pponents now admit; and history will
so record it, and when his term expires the
measures of his a dministration, not yet all ma
tured, will leave their impress upon the coun
try's greatness; and be monuments' of his
statesmanship, to be admired by every well
wisher of the home aild foreign relations of the
government. Witness the peaceful solution of
the Kansas and Utah imbroglios, the with
drawal of the right of search by Great Britain,
the treaties ofcommerce with Japan and Chinn,
the atonement of Paraguay for insults offered,
the. VATiallB India difficulties, peacefully solved,
and the present negotiation with Mexico, yet
to be made; with advantage to both notions;
these, - and other acts of his administration,
none of which are we more interested in than
the system of retrenchment and reform he has
inaugurated in all departments, will stamp
him as a man of prudence, foresight and pre-
eminent ability.
I have always thought that a new system of
selecting delegates to National Con yea tions
should be adapted, not only in l'enn , :\ vania,
but in every State of the U oio

have Senators and Representatives in,Congress.
As the Senators are elected by the St.•te Legis
latures, SO 11110011 the Senatorial delegates be
elected by the State Conventions, which have a
representation equal to both branches of the
Legislature. lint as the Representatives in
the lower house of Congress come direct and
fresh from the people, through their district
election, so should the Reprerentativedelegate s
to National Conventions, be sent there imme
diately by and.. front the people. Then all the
varied interests and ideas of the sovereigns
would be fairly represented—then would the
system of log rolling, trading, buying and wil
ing of State Conventions be gone forever—then
would the minorities of States be entitled to
their just rights in the general convention, if
which they aro deprived through the garrot
ing principle of state assemblages. The next
Democratic State Convention should act upon
this matter. New York has taken a step in
the right direction, favorable to It selection in
this mode, and Ohio, as I understand, will for-
Ward her delegation in accordance with the
system:

There can be no union among the antagonise
tic elements of the "Opposition,,. North aid
South, for, whilst the former is fast merging
into Abolitionism, the latter is clamorous for
the re-opening of the slave trade, and the pas
sage of a law Congress to protect slavery in
the territories. To these two causes may well
be attributed any losses our party has sustained
in the recent Southern elections, for there. the
‘' Opposition " have out-Ileroded Herod, in
gaining political advantage over What our
Northern deserting brethren call the pro-sla
very Democracy !" That the party of Jeffer
son, Jackson, Polk, l'ieree and Boob:vine
should be so violently opposed by the f-xt

men of the South and North, and upon sods
flimsy and discordant prete:,is, for, in ti,
South they say it is too -Free and in the
North it is too " Pro Slit, cry, - the best evi
dence thatit is right in principles and policy,
and recognizes the views of no section of the
country to the disparagement of any other
section, but labors sincerely, and with a
will for the mutual good and advancement of
the entire nation.
Cannot the conservative face of the country
rally, therefore, in a patriotic spirit, and asst-t
in crushing out the dangerous dogmas, North
and South, that peril the very existence of the
Confederacy? Cannot the sensible-thinking
portion of the community, its busineSs neat
its manufacturers, its judges, law-makers amid
'laborers, read the signs of the times, and dis
cover that in the impending sectional contest.
