a special committee was raised to investi
gate the subject of health in the city of New
York, which reported that, " the city' of
New York, in proportion to its population,
has - a higher ratio of mortality than other
large cities in this country and in Europe.",

of 'established reputation, which were sub
mitted to this committee, and are embodied
in their. report:
Dr. John. W. Francis, an eminent physician,
says : " I reply most positively that the health
of , lifoiw (York - is inferior to that of other - large

_Bathelder says: ." If .I were to assign a reason
-why Boston is more healthy than New York,
or why the city of Philadelphia is more healthy
than New York, I would say that the Quaker
ish shrewdness of Philadelphia, and the Yankee

vent the Causes of disease. The location of
Philadelphia is morejevel than this;'there are
more physical causes'of diseases there than there
arehere, independent of the temperature of the
climate. • • It seems to me that New York

&c. -Dr. - Alfred C. Post says: "The mortali
ty-returns show-a larger amount or mortality
in New York; in proportion to the population,
than in any other city, I believe, of temperate
climate, &c., yet I regard that our situation is
admirable with reference to salubrity. Dr.

al opinion that the health of the city of. li'cw

Thetestimony of many others was to the same
effect. In March, 1858, the Supervisors of New
Yorli,ln their reports, said "The propor
tionate mortality of London now is one in forty

as was: that ~of London two centuries - since,
being one in twenty-seven in the year 1557,
whereas fifty years ago,' it,was better than that
