OVER THE AMER. dver the river they beckon to me, ' Loved ones who've crossed to the farther side; - The gleam of theirenowy robes I see, But their voices are lostfln the dishing tide. There's one with ringlets of sunny geld, And eyes the reflection of hearses own blue; - Be moiled in the tiiliglitgmy and eold, And-the pale mist hid him from mortal view. We saw not the angels who met him there— The gates of the city we could not see; Over.the river, over thevlver, . bly brother. Amide waiting to welcome me. Over the river, the boatmenpele, tarried another, the household pet; .ffar brown curls waved in that gentle gale— Darling Minnie I I sea her yet. She crossed on her boa= her dirdpled hands, And fearlesaidgentered the phantom bark; We felt it gIiQM. m the silver sands, And all our atiltshlnegrew 'strangely dark. We know she is safe on. - the flirther side, • Wbere all tho ransomed and angels be; Over the river, the mystic river, My childhood's idol is waiting for me. For none return from thois quiet shores, Who cross with the boatman cold and pale; We hear the dip of the golden oars, And catch a gleam of the snowy sail; And 10l they have passed from our yearning hearts, They cross the stream, and are gone for aye. We may not sunder the veil apart That hides from our vision the gates of day; We only know that their barks no more • May sail with us o'er life's stormy sea; Yet somewhere, I know, on the unseen shore, They watch, and beckon, and wait for me. And I sit and think when the sunset's gold Is flushing river and hill, andshore, • I shall one day standby the water cold, And list for the sound of the boatman's oar; I shall watch for a gleam of the flapping sail, I shall hear the twat as it gains the strand, I shall p£ls9 fromaight with the boatman pale, To the better shore of the spirit land. I shall know the loved who have gone before, And Joythlly sweet will the meeting be, When over the river, the peaceful river, The Angel of.Detith shall carry me. Earn TM% Gen. Putnam. , Among the worthies who tlgared during the era of the American Revolution, perhaps there was none possessing more originality of char acter than General Putnam, who was eccentric and fearless, blunt in his manners—the daring soldier without the polish of the gentleman. He might well be called the Marion of the North, though he disliked disguise, probably from the fact of his lisping, which was very apt to overthrow any trickery he might have in view. At the time a strong-hold called Horseneck, some miles above New York, was in possession of the British, Putnam, - with a few sturdy patriots, was lurking in its vicinity bent on driving them from the place. Tired of lying in ambush, the men became impatient, and importuned the General with questions as to when they were going to have a bout with the foe. One morning he made aspeech something to the following - effect, which convinced them that something was in the wind : "Fellers—yon have been idle too long, and so have I. I'm going down to I3ush's, at Horeseneck in an hour, with an ox team and a load of corn. If I come back, I'll let you know all the particulars ; If I should not, let 'em have it, by the hokey He shortly afterwards mounted his ox-cart, dressed as one of the commonest order of Yankee farmers, and was soon at Bush's tav ern, which was in the possession of the British troops. No sooner did the officers espy him than they began to question him respecting Ms whereabouts, and finding him, as they - thought, a complete simpleton, they began to quiz him, and threatened to seize his corn and fodder. . "how much do you ask for your whole con cern ?"- they inquired. • "For marcy's sake, gentlemen," replied the mock clod-hopper, with the most deplora ble look of entreaty, "only let me off, and you shall have my hull team and load for nothing! And,if that won't dew, I'll give you my word I'll return to-morrow, and pay you heartily for your kindness and condescen sion." "Well," said they, "we'll take you at your word. Leave the team and provender with us, and we won't require any bail for your appear ance." Putnam gave up the team, and sauntered about for an hour or two, gaining all the infor mation that he wished. Ho then returned to his men,and told them of the disposition of the foe and his plan of attack. The morning came, and with it sallied out the gallant band. The British were handled with rough hands, and when they surrendered to • Gen. utnam, the clod-hopper, he sarcas tically .remarked —" Gentlemen, I have only kept my word. I told you I would call and pay you for your kindness and condescen sion. A. liClebees Piano and Furniture Polish.
