It is no wonder that the English journals
growl at the result. Against such iv combina

to offer resistance to it. It may eventually
prove so noxious to her interests, and so dis

ple, that she will rouse all her energies to
resist and overthrow it.

Emancipation in England.
The last plank of British bigotry is about
being sent adrift, and the odious Catholic
oath mu , ," which was favorably decided last
session by . T. , ries, is to be followed, in this
session, by tbc .lestructionot4be.baret.:rWhich
holds Catholic , , vs such, avi , ay 'frinii certain
high odices of Statec . The' law of tolerant
England," as framed ;by Whigs, deprives
'any Catholie,Ofiliting,,nruong" , others, the noble
post on which Sir'7llonias More reflected
honor—of tilling it either in England' Or Ire
land. We mean the office of Lord Olinncellor.
This tolerant law also excludes Catholics from
hoot:lien - of Primo 'Minister, or from that of
Lord Lieut.snant of Ireland. Besides these
there are numerous other restrictions of a
like- nature. With the destruction last
year of that °portion of the law which required
all'oflicials to swear against the Pope and the
Preumder, 'mid to make other equally absurd
declarations, it was natural that the ground. so
broken would be further extended. With this
view, Sir William Somerville has brought iu
a bill to open all offices under the crown,Ax
eluding none, to Catholics. At present they fill
all the offices to which they are allowed access.
The chief offices in the judiciary, in the army,
in the navy, in the general administration of
the country, in the royal household are held'
by Catholics. The chief dignitkries of the
several peerage ranks are represented by Cath
olic nobles. It seems absurd that any restric
tions should exist in a boastfully free Country,
in this progressive and liberal age, and there
does not appear to be any good ground fo,sup
posing that the prohibitions will continue.—
Remove this last barrier from the subject, and
then emancipate the sovereign ; for the veriest
slave in Britain, in a religious, sense is the rul
er, who must be of that faith which the law
ordains, and that only.
