Gas lu Pittsburgh. have before us the annual report of the Trustees of the Pittsburgh this Company fur 1859. From the report of the President and Engineers we gleam some interesting facts : There have been laid during the past year, 9,242 feet' f main pipes, of which 1.0;91 feet were used to replace mains of a smaller size, which will be relaid in situations better adapted for their use; of the new mains laid, upwards • of 3,500 feet have been of the diameter of six inches and upward. The cost of these extensions, including branches &c., amounts to 13,735.14, and has been paid out of the Extension fund, leaving, after paving the usual dividend on the present aanint of capital stuck, a balance subject to be `applied to further extensions, under the joint action of Councils and the Board of Trustces,of $21,663.43, leas the sum of $3.09:5.85 ad vanced for public lamps; and make the total a.mmuntof expenditure from the Extension fund since the year 1852, $60,641.46. The total extent of main pipes laid is 144, , $l9 ft..—less lifted and supplied by larger pipes, 7,619 ft. ' which leaves the length of pipes now 137,200 feet, or about twenty-six miles. The coal carbonized during the year hesbeen one hundred and ninety-seven thousand eight hpndred and eighty-six bushels, and the total quantity of . fLS furnished to the city and offices and to private consumers, amounts in all to Ga,141,652 feet, being an increase of 7.422,000 cubic feet over the preceding year, yielding an .average of three hundred and fourteen cubic feet Of gas for each bushel of coal carbonized, and making allowance for all the waste by leakage, condensation, &c., which is estimated at about eight per cent., the product, it is be lieved, is fully equal to any that has been real ized Ea other establishments. During the past year there have been two hutidred serVices laid and four public lamps set up, making in all 21;24 services, supplying at least 10,500 burners, and 517 public lamps, now .in use. The additional capital stock, authorized by tiMcharter of the company, has been disposed of- at a premium; enabling the board to make all the necessary improvements about the works without trespassing on the Extension Fund. A new retort house and gas holder bare been constructed on the premises, and by . the accuracy and skill displayed in their work _ manship, reflectgreat credit on the engineerof _ Comppy, under whose superi n tend ence they were constructed. A considerable portion of the building' stone taken from the excava tion for the tank, has been used in walling it and the lot on which it is placed. It was con sidered best to leave a considerable mass of rock in the centre of the tank, to save labor in its excavation and water in filling the tank. When, the repairs of the old retort house and benches are complete, which will be in a few weeks, the works v4II be competent to the manufacture of 600,000 feet of gas per day, a supply adequate to meet the demand of a pop ulation at least:double of that now supplied from the works. The demand for coke and tar is increasing, aperiment.ll being in progress for the ccinver sion.of the volatilo portion of the latter into a fluid suitable for burning'or use in the arts. An improvement hasrecently been adopted in supplying the gas meters with a solution of the . chloride of lime, instead of water or alcohol. ' This fluid is said to be neither liable to freeze - or evaporate. Steps have been taken .to give the invention alull trial, and if found advan tageous, its benefits will be secured to the Company and consumers ou moderate terms. The cost of manufacturing gas for the year, 'm4 been; according to the 'repoi:t, 545,503,23, yielding a very handsome profit. In conclusion, we give the following table, giving some interesting statistics, by which it will bo seen that in our city gas is not only more cheaply produced, but furnished to con s-timers at a lower rate, than any 'other city in the country: Name of Company Aitiany, N. Me yers, 3:MiE tsibullb pot Th entries for. the regatta for eight-oared row-boats, which takes place on Saturday evening, and in which the prize is a handsome set of colors, to be given by the proprietor of the Belvidere to the winning crew, closed on Monday night. Three boats only have enter ed for the contest, the " Undine," " Daniel Boisol," and "Gen. Wm. Robinson." As the craft are pretty well matched, and there is some feeling between the clubs owning the two former, a rather lively time may be antici pated. The boats will start from the Belvi dere House at six o'clock on Saturday evening, row to the Sharpsburg bridge and return, when the prize will be awarded to the "•first best." The entire course :is visible from the Belvidere, which will doubtless be crowded by visitors. We had expected to hear of a larger num ber of entries for this contest, but there is quite enough to make it interesting. Our neighbor Of the Chronicle indulges in some gratuitous remarks concerning the "Albatross" and "J. P. Fleming." As we understand it, the "Albatross" was not purchased for a race boat, but a pleasure barge, and will be entered for no race or regatta, unless challenged, when the Eclitise club will do the best they can.— The " .14 Leming" has been under repair for some time, and is not in a lit condition to take part in the regatta. The contest will, with the entries now made, be an exciting one, and at tract as much attention as though double the number of boats were entered. The regatta for four-oared boats takes place on Saturday, August ith, when Mr. Eicben laub offers as prizes a superb silver pitcher and goblet. The entries will close on Saturday of tale week, and we hope all the leading bunts will take part. ll.r.atmg, did you ever feel as though your body needed invigoration by indulgence in the good things of this life If you did von know what a rumury a tip-top meal is. `eat time you feel so, if the afternoon is pleasant, hire a horse and buggy, or take your own, if you have one, and drive to East - Liberty: the .ride such weather is this, will do you good ; when you get there stop at the well known "stand of Sam Beltler, and with your friend, take a seat in front of the house, in the shade, and con tent yourself until supper is ready, visiting: the stable and examining, Sam's line stork by way of recreation. WILL TILE OWNER CLAIM ?—The market constable yesterday seized on a wagon load of veg etables , cabbage, b ee ts, and potatoes, which had been purchased by some person in the Diamond market, with a view of selling &guiles, The driver of the wagon said they did not belong to him, and could not tell the own er's name. The vegetables were accordingly taken to the Mayor's oMce, where the owner can procure them by proving property and paying the charges, which, in this case, would be a tine for huckstering. The Regatta on Saturday PITTSBURGH, WEDNESD . MORNING, JULY 27, 1859. Explosion of a Locomotive—An Engineer and Fireman Scalded. On Tuesday evening, about six o'clock, a locomotive exploded on the Pennsylvania Rail road, at Denny's curve, scalding the engineer and fireman,. The circumstances were as fol lows: A freight train, eastward bound, loft the city a feW minutes before six o'clock,.and was drawn as far as the outer depot by the street locomo tive, which was there detached. Engine No. 86 had been run out of the round-house, in charge of Henry Hudstor., engineer, and Robert Hen drickson, fireman. They had in the boiler, according to the statement of the engineer, three guages of water; and were backing down to hitch to the train, when, immediately oppo site Mrs. Denny's house, the boiler exploded. The fireman jumped off and escaped with a slight scalding of the neck and one arm. The engineer remained in his box, and besides being similarly scalded, received it contusion on the forehead, by being thrown against a piece of timber with the force of the explosion. The accident occurred at five minutes past six.' The explosion was terrific, shaking the houses for some distance. The boiler parted in the middle, and the flues were curved around the front of the engine. The ground was torn up for yards around, and pieces of the boiler were thrown a distance of four or five hundred feet. Ono fragment was thrown into Mrs. .Denny's orchard, after ascending to a bight of ono hundred feet in the air. The locomotive is complete wreck, but little of the outer portion of the boiler remaining. Had the locomotive been attached to the train the damage might have been greater. The shattered locomotive was brought down and placed in the round house at the outer depot shortly after the ac cident. Tho engineer, Henry Iludston, and the fire man, Robert Hendrickson, are both married men and reside in the Ninth Ward. Both were able to walk to their homes, though Hen drickson was broug%t a short distance on the Johnstown accommodation train. Neither of them are seriously injured, having inhaled no steam. The wound on Hudston's forehead is merely superficial, and two Or three inches long. The cause of the accident is not known. The weight of steam carried was said by the engi neer to be ninety-five or on e hundred pounds, there was sufficient water in the boiler, and he knew of no defect in the engine. IT turns out that William Harris, hurt by the explasion of a musket at Linden Grove, during the target exerciso of the Washington Infantry on Monday, was nut so seriously in jured as at brat supposed, escaping with a slight burning by powder. He was able to walk home in the ranks. From New York NEW TOTE: July 2G.—The Herald's money article says that the restoration of peace in Europe, the most important event that has happened since the war broke out, produced little or no effect in commercial or financial circles hero to-day. The news caused the French funds to advance 2.i per cent.; the British three, and other foreign stocks in pro portion. But in Now York, neither merchan dim, nor stocks, nor money, nor exchange have been perceptibly effected. No doubt the season of the year, which is proverbially un favorable for speculative movements, is, in a measure, the cause of the prevailing apathy. Something is also duo to the complete sway which the bears exercise over the stocks and exchange, and which, for the present paralyze the action of that body. It may be doubted whether the dull indifference manifested in all monetary and commercial circles to-day can be of long duration. The Post says that while the news from Eu rope is most unsatisfactory for two important interests, the Western trade and the importer, yet there is, of course, much reason for con gratulation that so agitating an element as a European war is removed from the financial system, permitting a wider action of confi dence, the essential condition of prosperity. In the aggregate few can doubt that whatever may be the temporary disadvantage to the West, and however slow the recovery from embarrassment, the termination of the war will greatly promote business interests, and establish a better state of things generally.
