SILAS, OR TIIE,COAIBA
[col:cm:mm.] '
Three slaves now entered thecircus, two con
ducting each a horse, which they hitched to the
bull for the purpose of dragging him out of the
amphitheatre ; the third bearing a cup and am
.phora. Ho filled the cup, and presented it to the
young Syrian, which he bare:y sipped, but de
manded other arms. They brought him bow,
arrows and spear. He made , all haste to sally
forth, for beneath the throne which the emper
or had left void, a grate was tilted, and a lion
of Atla4, coming forth from his law, majestical
ly entered'the circus.
Ho is truly the King of Beasts, for when with
a roar ho saluted the day, all the spectators
trembled; and the courser himself, mistrusting
for the first time the nimbleness of his feet,
_ Q,~: ~.

answered with a neigh of affright. Silas alone
MS habituated to this powerful voice; for, hav
ing more than once heard it resounding through
the desert which extended from Lake Asphe
tins to the source of the Moise, he prepared him
self for attack or defense, while sheltering be
hind a, post very near that to which Acute was
bound, and made ready the best and keenest of
his arrows. During this time, his noble and
puissant enemy slowly and confidently advanc
ed, showing the wrinkles of his broad face, and
sweeping the stand with his tail.
The keepers lanced WM, to arouse him, by
darts muffled with streamers of different colors;
but he; impassable and grave, continued to ad
vance, not disquieting himself with these con
trivances—when suddenly, amid the offensive
wands, a sharp and hissing arrow sped like
lightning to bury itself in one of his shoulders.
Re suddenly stopped with more astonishment
than pain, and, as he could not comprehend that
a human being would have the hardihood to A
frick him, he yet doubted concerning his wound ;
but soon his glaring eye guessed it ;- his jaws
opened ; a roar, heavy and prolonged, like the
rumbling.of thunder,eseaped 11.9 out of a cavern,
from the depth of his breast. He seized the ar
row fixed in the wound, and crushed it be
tween'his teeth, casting around him a look
which, despite the grating that protected them,
caused the spectators to recoil. He sought for
an object on which his royal rage might fall.
At thiS moment he perceived the courser,drem-
Wing as if he were standing on ice, thougi he
was covered with sweat and foam; ceasing to
roar, but uttering a short cry, sharp and reit
erated, he made a bound which brought him
within twenty paces of this the first victim of
his choice.
Now commenced al eocond course, more w•on
derful even than the first, for there, is nut much
of science itself in man to mar the instinct of
animals. Force end swiftness were promptly
put forth in all their savage energy, and the
,
I eyes of two hundred thousand spectators were
turned fur- a thut from the two Christians to
follow round the Amphitheutie this fantastic
I chase, the more agreeable to the crowd that it
was least expected. A second leap brought the
i liotiqj the horse, which, crouching at the back
part of the circus, could flee neither to the
Tight nor to the left. 'He sprang over the
:I , head of his enemy, whom he had set himself to
pursue with unequal bounds, bristling his hair
and uttering from time to time sharp growling,
which the fugitive answered by neighings of
+ terror:
• - .
Soon the ill-fated courser, fascinated. as wo
men and gazelles are said to be at the Eight
serpentsfelldown,struggled and rolled upon tin
sand in the agony of terror. At this tnoment
second arrow left the 1,..w of Silas. and laird
ed itself between the ribs of the lion. Th
lion turned himself; this instant ed th
Syrian to scud his enemy a third messenger of
pain. The lion sprang upon the Man, WllO
received him on his spear. The man and lion
rolled together, and were seen to tear shreds of
flesh. Many of the spectators were sprinkled
:with blood. Aetee uttered a cry of adieu to her
Christian brother. She no longer had a defen
der, but she no longer had an enemy. The
lion survived only long enough for vengeance;
the agony of the executioner commenced when
that of the victim terminated. As to the horse.
he lay dead, without being touched by the
lion.
Now all eyes were directed to Actee, whom
tlih death of Silas had left defenseless. Some
of the spectators rose to demand her merciful
release, when the cry, "Sit down, sit down !"
was heard, for at the lower steps a grate was
raised, and a tigress crept into the arena.
Hardly escaped from her den, she crouched
to the earth, looking round with ferocity, but
without inquietude or astonishment. Soon she
snuffed the air, and began to crawl like n ser
pent to the place where the horse bad fallen
arrived there, she reared against the grate,
smelline - ' and biting:! the bars which ho had
touched, rearing immoderately, examining the
iron, the sand, and the air, for the absent prey.
Soon the emanations from the dead, yet warn;
and palpitating tlesh, reached her :she marched
straight towards the tree against which had
been enacted the combat between Silas and the
lion, turning neither to the right nor to the
left, except to pick up shreds of flesh strewed
by the noble animal who had preceded her in
the circus. At length she came to a pool of
blood which the sand had not absorbed, and
began to drink like a thirsty dog, roaring and
raging in proportion as she drank. When she
had finished, she looked round afresh with
sparkling eyes, and this only till she perceived
Actee, who, bound to the tree,
and with closed
eyes, awaited death without daring to see it
come.
Instantly the tigress crouched tint, creeping
in a manlier obliquely towards her victim, but
without losing sight of her. When about ten
paces from her she rose, and with extended neck'
and widened nostrils, inspired the air which,
came from the place; then, with one leap,
cleared the space that had separated the young
Christian, she fell at her feet; and when the
whole ampitheetre, in waiting to see her torn
to pieces, uttered n cry of terror, by which was
evinced the entire interest which the maiden
had inspired in the spectators, who had prepa
red to clap their hands at her death, the tigress
crouched, gentle and fondling as a gazelle, ut
tering faint cries of joy, and licking the feet of
her former mistress. At these unexpected ca
resses the astonished Actee opened hereyes, and
recognized Phathe, the favorite Nero. I nstant
ly the cry of " Merry ! mercy !" resounded
thrOugh the whole place, for the multitude
looked upon this gratitude of the tigress as a
prodigy.. 13e - sides Aetee had suffered three
trials ; and, since she was saved, she was free.
Thus the changed spirit of the spectators show
ed one of transitions so natural to a mob, from
the extreme cruelty to the extreme clemency.
The young cavaliers threw down their chains
of gold, the ladies their chaplet of flowers; all
rose upon the steps, calling upon the slaves to
loose the victim. An immense crowd was in
expectation. At sight of her they burst into
applause, and were ready to carry her in tri
umph; but Actee suppliantly clasped her hands,
and the people - opened before her, leaving a
free passage. She hurried to the tent of Diana,
sat down behind one of the pillars, and re
mained weeping and in despair, for she now
rreTretted that she had not died, beholding her
self alone in the world.
When might came, shorecollected that one
family remained to her, and bent her solitary
way to the catacombs.

Bare pined the confidence:
of all who use them, and have
proved one of the most valu
able inventions of the age.
They use a Shuttle, making
ides of the cloth alike, which
Cant —. pulled out.
They are all made with the highest mechanical skill,
and all warranted to work well on all kinds of goods,
from the Lightest Fabric to Heavy Leather. In particu
lar, we would call the attention of all to our newTamily
Sewing Machine. It has been manufactured expressly
for Family Ilse, and has met with favor' from all. It is .
so simplified as to render it almost impossible to cet out .
of order; or derange its operations; indeed it is so sim
ple as to astonish one, that so small a pieee of mechan
ism will sew.
Below, we give a description of the different styles of
the Weed Patent.
No. 1. Is a very convenient style, which can be
worked by hand or foot, on or off its own table. For
convenience of shipping, and also for large manufacto
nes, dbereit Is necessary to place a number of Machines
into a long bench, making ono table answer for them
all. Priee, $9O.
No. li. With Walnut or Mahogany Table, eitherwith
or without Box Top, which locks down. Price; $lOO
and $llO.
No. 3. Same sirs as No. 2, but runs with a belt, and
Id a much.higher rate of speed. This kind is well
adapted to marinfacturing Clothing or Leather work.
This is really the cheapest Machine in the market, as
There is no work done on a Sewing Machine that it will
not do. It is confidently assorted that this Machine
runs easier than any machine new in use. Price, $lOO.
No. 4. This machine has a long arm, to accommo
date large work. IL runs at a high rate of speed. runs
easily, and is, without doubt, the best Machine for Tail
or's use, ever offered to the public. It is also peculiarly
fitted for plantation work, es it is very simple yet sub
stantial and durable, with butlittle natality to get out of
order. Price, $l3l.
No. 3. This is a new and cheaper style, and n gen;
oral favorite for Family . Light Luther, and a. great
variety of work. It hasbeen gotten up with reference
to furnishing a strong and durable, yet light and tasty
Machine, at a less price than either of the above. It
runs very easy, rapidly, arid is pronounced the best
machine now in market. for /10.
N0..6. This is a Machinegot up on an entirely , new
principle, different tram anything ever before offered
LO the public, and we confidently assert that for family
use it fias net an equal. It is very . light and tasty, runs
very rapidly: is almost noiseless in its operation, end
uses n straight 'needle. It is so arranged as to be
utterly impossible to miss stitches. IL has a tension on
Beth sides. and carries a large supply of thread on the
under spool. The motions are gained by two small
cranks that run without perceptible noise. The two
threads are worked in such a manner as never to both
pull at the same time, and. consequently little liable to
break. The seam is very elastic, and the thread does
not break in washing. It will do coarse work better
than ai v machine now in market, as it uses silk, gotten
nr linen with equal facility. Price. $5O.
Deseriptive ctrenlars furnished gratis.

Is there a husband. father, or brother in the United '
States, who will permit the drudgery of hand sewing in
his family, when a Grover t Baker Machine will do it
better, more expeditiously, and cheaper than can possi
bly be done by hand.
Sir Sant fm Circular. "SA
The first place in public estimation is now justly ac
corded to the Grover t Hitter Machine, for family sew
ing. for the following reasons:—lst. It is more simple
and easily kept in order than any other Machine. :id.
It makes a seam which will not rip or ravel, though every
third stitch is cut. 3d. It - sows from two ordinary spools,
and thus all trouble of winding thread is avoided, while
the same machine can be adapted at pleasure,by amore
change of spools, to all varieties of work. 4th. The mine
machine runs silk, linen thread, common spool cotton,
with equal facility. 6th. The scam is as elastic as the
most elastic fabric, so that it is free trona all liability to
break urwashing, ironing, or otherwise. 6th. The stitch
made by this machine is more beautiful than any other,
made either by hand or machine. - •
