Sttouss, charged with huckstering, who was taken before JllO. Mayor and discharged. The following affida-: rit will inform our readers as to a subsequent transaction : J. D. Strous, of the city of Pittsburgh, being duty sworn, states that on Friday morning, the Sth day 'of July, the market constable, James Gracey, brought ine before . the Mayor, charged with huckstering, by purchasing veg,- Mables in the Diamond market. The Mayor dismissed the case. Afterwards I gave Gracey .44y cents, when be told me I might buy, but to keep out of his way. J. D. SU:Oils. Sworn and subscribed before me this Bth day of July, 1859. H. A. WEAvEr., Mayor. This looks like a queer transaction. We would not like to charge "brihery and corrup tion!' upon the market constable, but we should like to be informed as to when he was author ized to give license to hucksters to break the law ? For this is virtually nothing less—if in consideration of the sum of fifty cents lie gives one man the privilege to buy, (out of his sight, ) may he not do likewise with others, and thus become, instead of a protector of the public against imposition, a violator of the law! This matter at - least requires further investigation. MYSTERIOUS.—The Wheeling papers are responsible for a story to the effect that, about two years ago, a man came to Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, about twelve miles from that city, and deposited in the branch Bank of that place a large amount of money. The man remained over night, next morning drew his money and resumed his journey. Recently two police of ficurafAra- Washington city made inquiry af ter the traveler, sayilig fie had heeil rdurdered and robbed, and that they had reason to believe the money was concealed in the neighborhood, where they intended to search for the hidden treasure. They left Mt. Pleasant, and after searching some time for the money, said they could find' nothing, and went away. After their departure, a citizen wrote to Washington asking l the character of the officers. A reply came that no such persons were known there. It is now supposed that a - murder was com mitted by the very men who came to hunt for tie inoney, or their aecompioes, and that they huziceeded in finding it. The advices by the North Briton are four days later than those furnished by the steamer Africa, and aro of a highly important charac ter, both in a political and linatteit.d point of view. A treaty of peace between Austria and Franco and Sardinia had already been conclu ded. The provisions of this treaty are briefly follmys : An rMlian oonfederation is to be formed un der the honorary presidency of the Pope of Rome; Austria -oncedes Lonthardy to Prance; Napoleon, in turn, grants those possessions to Sardinia ; Austria retains her right of rule over Venice. The steamer left livcrpopl Wove th effect of this news had tinte to be developed. Cyrus W. Field came as a passenger in the North Briton• Ile has accomplished the ob ject of his visit. The two Emperors had an interview un the Iltb, at Villa Franca. The Morning Post contends that the Pope is deprived of his substance, but keeps a shadow of supremacy. The Times says that Franco has spent tGO,- 00,000 and 50,000 men only to give Milan a Piedmontese instead of an Austrian master, and to establish the Pope in a temporal ty even beyond his imagination. Is all this real! The Emperor's game must be a long one. NEW YORK, July 23.—The Evening Post has soon private letters just received in this city, containing several items of news from from Italy that have not as yet been known hare. VT,VBUI4OII. The massacre at Perugia had created an in tense excitement in ATilan, and on the 2d of ulx the Pope ' Cardinal Antonelli, and Col. t i c hmicit, Were burped in ettigy on the Plaza d' ' rtdee.' ' It'is said that three thousand Sardinian sol diers have repaired to Bologna to protect that clty, and support the provisional government. Massino .Icll'4zeglie had also gone to Bologna. Tho news of the battle of Solferino created as great a sensation at Naples as elsewhere, and the young King at once despatched a messen ger to the camp, to congratulate the allied vic tors. It was further rumored that an envoy extraordinary would bo sent to him, perhaps to form an allegiance with the Sardinian gov ernment. NEW YORE., July 23.—This nft4noon, ghile a young w t uncivl,. Virginia flteWart, was walk ing along Br6ad'way, near Canal street, she was shot derd by her lover, Robert McDonnell. PHILADELPHIA, Sunday, July 24th.— The bark Rowend arrived. from Venezuela with Paez and a number of other prominent Venezuelians returning in consequence of po litical troubles. Venezuela is unsettled, and factions have divided the entire country, continually fighting. President Castro has appointed Liberal Ministers. Arend°, Bendon, Echcandia and Gen. Sileo are all liriends of the revolution. They bad sent commissioners to the chieftains of the insurgents to treat and make a convention. Gen. Castro's position seemed very precarious, the public treasury 'being exhausted and confidence lost. Port Lagmara 'nes closed when the Rowena left, the custom house boat came after her when she was under sail. Great difficulty was experienced in Puerto Cabello to load vessels, there being no working men, and the roads were blockaded by the insurgents. The Funeral of Hon. Rufus Choate. BOSTON, .July 23.—The funeral ceremonies over the body of Mr. Choate, which took place at the Essex street church, at • eleven o'clock this morning, was attended by a large crowd of svmputhysing . citizens. Governor Banks, the Judges of all our Courts, representatives of the entire Massachusetts bar, the Mayor of the city, and the members of the various .branches of our municipal government, to gether with the family and intermediate friends of the deceased, filled the church in every part, so that thousands of citizens were unable to gain admittance. The funeral ser mon was delivered by tho Rev. Dr. Adams, the pastor of the church. At the close of the services, the hearse . proceeded towards Cam bridge, through Boylston and Charles street. A large procession followed the remains to the bridge. So impressive a funeral pageant has seldom if ever been witnessed in this city. Mr. Choate's remains wore interred at Mount Au burn. -----*"....-- Destructive Fire at Cincinnati CINCINNATI, July 24.—Harrison S Wil son's Spice Mills, on Walnut street, were dam aged by fire this afternoon.
