TTSBITRGTI POS
SILA.S, OR. THE COMBAT.
BY ALEX. DUMAS
The gladiabers had just made their . exit ; tue
molt reigned throughout the circus, and the
fencers were succeeded by those who were to
be exposed to the wild beasts. They were
Christians; so that all the hatred was transfee
red to them, and all the sympathy to the beasts:
Meanwhile, whatever was the impatience of
the crowd, they were forced to wait until the
slaves hid drawn their rakes - over the sands of
the circus ; but this operation was hastened by
the furious vociferation from every part of the
amphitheatre. At length the slaves withdrew,
the arena was for a moment empty, and the
multitude were all in expectation. A door then
opened and all attention was turned towards
the new victims about to make their appear
ance.
A female entered, clad in a white robe-and
covered with a white veil. She was led to one
of the posts, to which she was boiled by . a cord
round her waist. One of the slaves then tore
off the veil, when the spectators beheld a fig
ure perfect in beauty, and, though pale, yet re
signed.- Alengthened murmur was audible.
Notwithstanding her title of Christian, the
maiden at first view engaged the minds' of this
crowd so impressively, and with such a change,
that all eyes were rivetted upon her. A paral
lel door now opened, and ayoung man entered.
It was customary thusto expose to the beasts
a Christian of both sex; giving to the man all
the means of defense, from a desire to retard
not only his own death, but that of his coin pan
" ion. He was permitted to select ei cher a mother,
a lover, or a sister—thee giving to, a son, a
lover or a brotherfresh courage to prolong a
combat which the Christians almost always re
fused for martyrdom, though they knew that
if they triumph set over the first three animals
that were let loose upon them, they should be
saved.
In effect, though this men, at first sight of
whom it was easy to recognize vigor and sup
pleness, was followed by two slaves, one bear
ing for him a sword and two javelins, the other
leading a Numidian courser—he didnotappear
at all disposed to allow the people a spectacle
of the struggle that awaited him. He advanc
ed slowly to the circus, cast around him a look
calmeend undaunted, then making a sign with
his hand that the horse and arms were useless, I
he raised his eyes towards heaven, fell upon his
knees and offered up a prayer. At this in
stant the people deceived in their expectations,
began to threaten and bellow, exclaiming, "It
is a. ceenbat, and not amartyidom that we come
to see!" And now the cry was heard—"To
the cross ! to the cross !" In comparing pun
ishment with punishment, he preferred this,
though the suffering might be more protracted.
A ray of ineffable joy shone in the eyes of the
young man, who extended his arms in token
of thaakfulness, happy that he was about to die
_the same death by which the Redeemer made
his apotheosis. At this moment ho heard be
hind him a sigee so deep that he turned him
self. .
! Silas !" murmured the maiden.
" Actee !" exclaimed the youth, as helasten
ed towards her.
"Silas have pity on me," said Actec."—
"Soon a.s I observed you, hope sprang_ up in my
heart. You are courageous and strong,
inured to combats with the inhabitants of the
forests and hordes of the desert. Peradventure
if -you fight, you save usboth."
" And the martyrdom ?" interrupted Silas.
" And the pain !" said Actee ,letting fall her
head upon her breast. " Alas lam not like
thee, born in a holy city; I am a maiden of
Corinth. I have never heard the words of
life from the mcutb of Him for whom we are
to die. Brought up in the religion of my an
cestors, my faith and creed are new. The
word martyrdom,' was unknown to me until
yesterday. Perhaps I might have courage for
myself ; but, Silas, I were forced to see you d.e
this slow and cruel death.—" -
".Enough—l will fight!" exclaimed Silas.
"I am sure to find, though late, the joy with
which you charm me this day. Then making a
sign of command to his slaves—" My horse,
sward and javelins !" said he with the voice
and gesture of an emperor.
The multitude clapped their hands, perceiv
ing that they were soon to witness one of those
Herculean struggles which could not fail to
arouse sensations rendered obtuse by the ordi
nary combats.
'Silas quickly approached the horse. It was
like him, a son of Arabia. The two compat
riots recognized each other. The man ad
dressed the courser in a strange language. but,
As if the animal uneretood the words, it neighed
an answer. Silas took from the back and
mouth of his companion the saddle and bridle
which the Romans had imposed as badges of
slavery, and the child of the desert bounded
joyously around his liberator.
Meanwhile, Silas, in his turn, freed himself
from every encumbrance, and, wrapping his red
cloak about his left arm, stood in his tunic and
turban ; girded on his 'sword, seized his jave
lins, called his charger, who obeyed with the
docility of a gazelle, and, vaulting upon his
back, he made, while bending over his neck,
and without any help for directing him, ex
cept his knees and voice, three eircuite around
the post where Actee was: bound, in the man
lier of. Perseus defending Andromeda, the
pride of the Arab outrivaling the humility of
the Christian.
At this moment a folding door opened below
the Podium, and a bull of Cordova, goaded by
slaves, entered bellowing into the circus; but
lie had hardly taken two steps OW by reasons
Of the strong light, terrified at the view of the
spectators, and the shouts of the multitude, he
bent his fore-legs, laid his head on the ground,
and directing upon Silas his ferocious eyes,
began to throw zip the sand under his belly, to
tear up the ground with his horns, and to issue
volumes of smoke through his nostrils.
Presently one of the keepers threw him a
manakin stuffed with straw, in Tei;emblanco of
tpgrt. The bull instantly hurled it down,
traMplee- it under his feet; but at the mo
ment when his rage was titles height, a jav
elin came whizzing from the hand of Silas
and imbedded itself in his flank. The bull
gave forth a roar of pain, and instantly aban
doning the fictitious enemy for his real adver
sary, advanced rapidly towards the Syrian, his
head down and leaving on the ground a fur_
row of blood ; but Silas quietly suffered him to
pine up, when, having made A few steps to
wards him, he managed, by the aid of his
voice and knees, to effect a spring from the
side of his nimble steed, and whilst the bull
was hurrying on - his course, a second javelin
went to hide itself full six . inches in his flank.
The animal stopped, trembling as if about to.
fall; but instantly recovering, rushed upon
the horseend eavalier ; but the horse and
fits rider fled before him as if born by a whirl:
wind.
They thus went three times round the am
pitheatre, the bull becoming weaker at each
time and losing ground with the horse and
cavalier. Finally, at the third round, he fell
to his knees, but immediately raising himself,
he uttered a terrible roar, and, as if ho bad lost '
all hope of overtaking Silas,he stared all around
him to see if he could not find another victim
on whom to vent his rage. It was then he dis
covered Actee. He seemed for a moment to
doubt whether she was an animated being,
such was her immobility and pallor, giving
the appearance of a statue; hilt very soon,
- ;itretching out his neck and nose, he snuffed
the air which came from her place of confine
ment. Instantly gathering strength, ho rushed
directly at her. The maiden saw him coming,
and shrieked with horror ; but Silas was watch
ing ever her. It was now his turn to rush
upon the bull, which made far fight : but, by a
few leaps of the faithful Numidian, he was
quickly overfb.ken. Silas sprang from the
back of his hoise to thpt of the bull, and while
with his left arm he seized him by one horn
and twisted his neck, with the right head be
plunged his sword to the hilt in his throat.
The bull thus slaughtered, fell, expiring at half
a lance's length from Actee% but she had clos
ed her eyes, awaiting death. The applauses
of the circus alone apprised her of the first
victory of Silas.

established the worth of these Pills beyond dispute, as a
purgatlye anti-bilious medicine; and their use by, up

the wants of humanity, and are in advance of medical
science. The above pals, although purely vegetable, are
now known and used as a substitute for calomel (fly

them as a blue-pill substitute or otherwise, award to them
the highest praise. They come nearer ton concentrated

aighest mechanical skill,
well on all kinds of goods,
from the. Lightest Fabric to Heavy Leather. In perticu
ler, we would call the attention of all to our new Family
Sewing Machine. It has been manufactured expressly
for Family Use, and has met with , favor from nil. It is
so simplified as to render it almost inipossible to get out
of order,. or derange its operations; indeed it is so Sittl•
ple as to astonish one, that BO small a piece of Mechan
ism will sew..
Below, we give a description of the different styles of
the Weed Patent.
No. 1. Is a very convenient style, which can be
worked by hand or foot, on or oft its own table. For
convenience of shipping, and also for large manufacto.
'
nes where it Is necessary to places number of Machines,
into a long bench, making one table answer for •thev,
all. Price, $OO.
No. 2. With Walnut orMahogany Table, eitherwith
or without Box Top, which locks down. Price, $lOO
and $llO.
No. - Starke aye as N 0.2, but runs with a belt, and
at a much higher rate of speed. . This kind is well
adapted to manuitticturipg 'Clething or Leather work.
This is really the cheapest Machine - in the market, as
there is no work done on a Sewing Machine that it will
not do. It is confidently asserted 'that this Machine
runs easier than any machine now in use. Price, $lOO.
No. 4.. This machine has a long arm, to accommo
date large work. It runs at a high rate of speed, runs
easily, and is, without doubt; the best' Machine for Tail
or's use, ever offered to the public. It is also peculiarly '
fitted for plantation work, as it is very simple yet sub
stantial and durable, with but little liability to get out or.
order. Price,Sl23. • •
No. 5. This is it,ne, and cheaper style, and a gen,
end favorite fore Light Leather; and a great
variety of work. It )has-been gotten op with reference
to furnishing a strong and durable, yet light and tasty
Machine, at a less price than either of the above. It.
runs very easy, rapidly, and Is pronounced the best
machine now in market, for SOD. -
No. O. This is a Machine got up on an entirely new
principle, different from anything ever before offered
to the public, and we confidently assert that-for family
use it has not an equal. It is very . light and tasty, runs
very rapidly: is almost noiseless in its operation, and
rises a straight needle.. It is so arranged as to be
utterly, impossible to miss stitches.' It has a tension on
both sides, and carries a large supply of thread on the
under spool. The motions are gamed by two small
cranks that - run without perceptible noise. The two
threads are worked in such a manner as never to both
pull at the same time, and consequently little liable to
break. The seam is very elastic, and the thread does
not break in washing. It will do ebarse work better
than Sr machine now in market, as it uses silk, cotton
or linen with equal facility. Price, $5O, , •

The first pptarp in public estimation is now justly ac-
corded to the Grover A Biker Machine, for family sew
ing.for the following reasons :— lsl. It is more simple
and easily kept in order than any other Machine. 11.
It makes a seam which will not rip or ravel, though every
third stitch is cut. 3,1. It sews from two ordinary spools,
and thus all trouble of winding thread is avoided, while
the same machine can be adapted at pleasure,by enure
change, of spools. to all varieties of work. 4th. The same
machine runs silk, linen thread, common spool cotton,
with equal facility. 6th. The seam is as elastic as the
most elastic fabric, so that it is free mom all liability to
break in washing. ironing, or otherwise. 6th. The stitch
made by this machine is snore beautiful than any other,
