OPEN Wrs - nows.—A very large quantity of
fresh air is- spoiled and rendered foul by the
.act of breathing. A man spoils not less than
a gallon every minute. In eight hours' breath
ing, a full grown man spoils as much fresh air
as seventeen three-bushel sackes could hold.
If he were shutup in a room seven feet long,
and seven feet higb, the door and windows fit
ting so tightly that no air could pass . through,
he would die, poisoned by his own breath, in
a very few hours ; in twenty-four hours ho
would have spoiled all the air contained in the
honi, and have converted it into poison !
eader, when 'you . rise to-morrow morning,
just go out of doors for live minutes, and ob
serve carefully the freshness of the air. That
air is in a state in which God keeps it for
benthing. Then come bank suddenly into your
closed room, and your own senses will at once
make you feel how very far the air in your
chamber is from being in the same wholesome
a 94 serviceable condition.
SA.WFORD OPRICA TROURE.—This COM
pAny, now traveling, will commence a series
of their Ethiopian entertainments on next
Monday evening. The company comprises
eighteen performers, including the Sanford
Children, and an excellent Brass Band. Dick
IFtor,
the champion jig dancer, has also been
hngaged.by Sanford, said will appear. Sanford
is a host in himself, and is always successful in
this city. The entertainments will be given
at City Hall, the largest, as well as the best
ventilated hall in the city.
Taz PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD COSLPANy
have commenced making excavations for a
new Paasenger Depot at Johnstown. The site
is a good one, and it is the intention of the Corn
pany to erect.such a depot thereon as will meet
the increasing demand of the traveling public,
which are as great.' perhaps, as any other be
tween .the two cities. The new building will
likewise afford facilities for the freight business,
which is quite extensive.

AnttF.sTED--.lohn Ray, whose elopement
with the wife of a man named Cassiday, from
Greensburg, we noticed yesterday, was arrest
ed in this city yesterday, and committed fbr
trial on a charge of adultery. It seems that
the couple went to Philadelphia, with three of
Cassiday's children, where the woman called
on her brother, and informed him that her
husband had treated her badly, and she had
left him. The brother gave her a home, and a
day or two afterward they started to Greens
burg to get the remaining children. Arrived
there, the woman was afraid to leave the train,
and with her brother, came to this city, Ca.ssi
day also being on the same train. On arriving
here, Cassiday went to the office of Alderman
Lewis. to get a warrant against his wife, for
adultery and abducting his children. The
woman and brother followed to the office,
where the mutter was examined, and finding
Cassiday'iwife in bodily fear, the Alderman
committed him for surety, of the peace. Ray
arrived on the next train, and was arrested as
stated. The brother has gone to Greensburg
for the children, and on his return the matter
will probably be amicably adjusted.
TH F. ETH 10P lAN M INSTR Y.l.S.—Our citizens
seem to act upon the maxim of " Laugh and
grow fat," as, is evinced by the large audiences
nightly assembled at the,Apolle Theatre to sea
and hear the Morris Brothers' Minstrels. -- To
laugh, it is only necessary to go there, for we
defy any one to resist the temptation. Every - -
thing they do is provocative of mirth ; their
burlesques, witticisms. •and Comic songs are
new, their instrumentation perfect, their vocal
music excellent, and their dancing,gnsurpassed.
The company is tidotibtedls- the best now trav
eling, and their success is nothing mote .than
justly due. Last night the audience was as
large as on any previous evening, and allseent-,
ed as much pleased. To-morrow night is their
last, and those who desire to go should take
the opportunity.
Tun Lunrrmu,-,-Tho thttidei storm of last

country papers bring usiccounts of theArects
of the lightning in different localities. Thu
wife of an Irish laborer named Murray, whin
resided near Industry, Beaver county, 'vas
struck by lightning and instantly killed. Two
others in the same vicinity were also killed du
ring the same storm.
A. frame barn in Centro township, Butler
county, was also struck, set on fire and burned
to the ground. Mr. Leibold had his wagon,
harness, and implements in the barn, together
with some hay, fodder, grain, &c., all of which
were consumed. Lose about $l,OOO. We un
derstand that the loss is partially covered by
insurance.
About the same time, tho barn of Mr. Oder,
Hannastown, Butler county, was struck; and,
with its contents, entirely consumed.
To PRESERVE AND DRESS TIIEHAIR.-0130
of the best dressings for the hair ever invented
is Burnett's Cocaine. is will known that
there is a principle in Cocoa-Nut Oil, owing to
which the hair of the natives of the South
Seas, who use it, remain; glossy and never falls
off. Burnett has greatly improved this oil by
chemical purification, and It now not only
thoroughly cleans the hair, forming a lather
when rubbed on, but keeps it glossy, slightly
damp and in form as brushed for along time.
Ladies ere sin g their hair elaborately, for the
evening, will tind that it will keep it in shape
for hours. Its qualities as preventing the hair
from falling are truly remarkable.2Plalatiel

LATEST NEWS FROM EUROPE
ARRIVAL OF THE AFRICA.
Conclusion of an Armistice till
the Fifteenth of August.
STRONG PROBABILITIES OF PEACE
ADVANCE IN CONSOLS AND COTTON
NEW YORK, July 21.—The steamer Africa
has arrived, with European dates to the 9th
instant.
An armistice has been agreed upon by the
contending parties till the 15th of August.
The effect of this bad bean to produce great
buoyancy in all the money markets, and strong
hopes were entertained of peace.
On the Bth, Napoleon telegraphed that an
armistice had been agreed upon on the 7th, and
was signed at Villa Franca by 11 . 05:1 and Vail
lent, to end on the 15th of August ; which stip
ulates that commercial vessels ; without dis
tinction of Bag, shall be allowed to. navigate
the Adriatic unmolested. The Paris Moniteur
cautions the public against misunderstanding
tla armistice, and says negotiations may re
commence, but does nut see how the war may
be terminated. '
The London ?Imes believes In pence, and
says that it is well authenticated. The propo
sal came from France indicating a good spirit
of moderation or thegreat necessities of France,
but does not believe it was the latter. Franco
reaps all the benefits either way. The armis
tice has caused much excitement.
The Sardinians proceeded viorouslyin the
siege of Poschiora, but this and other move
ments have now lost their interest.
In the Federal Diet, on the 7th inst., Aus

contingent, and requests the Prince-Regent of
Prussia to assume the command-in-chief.

Washington.
The navy estimates have been introduced in
Parliament, and 10,000 additional men asked
for.
It is reported that the mail steamers have
been notified to prepare to carry armaments,
according to their contracts.

The Ti.711(.1 with regard to the armist'ic'e,
there is little to communicate beyond, svhat the
public already knows. Ali that seams to be
well authenticate) is, that the reveosal Came
from France, and was the result of the Em
peror's own doterulittation. That the emperor
should stop short in a career of victory, and
make overtures to the foe, whom be hasdefeated
in two pitched battles and hurled back to the
limits of Lombardy, argues the moderation or
the necessities of the French ruler. We can
hardly believe that the latter has been the
cause of this sudden resolve_
