place, on Sunday night last, of which the fol

Cassiday, also Irish, were arrested on charges
of adultery. At the Justice's office the case
'Wei Compromised, the parties discharged, and
nothing'mor'e was heard of them until Mon

Pittsburgh, whither he had gone to rent a

HOUSE STRUCK 111 C
the thunder storm of Friday last, a house in
Blairsville:occupied by Patrick Finland, was
struck Thy lightning, knocking out the, gable
end, and tearing up the flooring of the second
story. Mr. Finland was'dipping water from a
barrel, to which water was conveyed from the
inof, and the fluid, pas"sing down the spout,
struck him and stunned him considerably.
Curry, residing in the house of pr. Laney,

THE CITIZENS AND THE OLYMPICS.—The
grand cricket match between the first eleven of
the Olympic Club and twenty-two of our cit

played on the Commons, in Allegheny city.
A close contest may be expected, as the
regulars" are to be led by Messrs. Cheeseman,
Earl and Pilkington, all cricketers of ability.
The Olympians have a good reputation, and
their club embraces many good players, but
with ocrds Of Awd to one 'against 'there, they

out victorious. A dinner will be served up on
the ground for the players.

HEAVY STORNI AT JOHNBTOWN.--011 Tues
day night, the good citizens of Johnstown
were much alarmed by a heavy thunder storm,
which broke over the town shortly before
midnight. The wind blew a hurricane, fences
and out-buildings were torn down, and sheds
unroofed. The rain came down in torrents,
bearing the semblance of a water-spout. The
i'esilients were much frightened, being impress
ed with the idea 'that a second delugehad
come upon them. We hear of no one being
injured, and it seems likely tlliej. spare more

THE MINSTRELS.—The Morris Brothers,
Pell and Trowbridge Minstrels, still continue
to attract large audiencesat the Apollo Theatre.
On Tuesday evening, as well as last night, the
dress circle was literally a sea, of fans, crin
oline, pretty bonnets, and female faces, every
seat being tilled. All present, the ladies es
pecially, seemed to enjoy the entertainment
hugely,notwithatanding the heated atmosphere.
The c6mpany seem to have a fresh budget of
fun at each visit, and our public will not weary
of them soon. Johnny Pell, Lon and Billy
Morris are the very impersonation of fun, and
no one can look at them without feeling the
spirit of risibility strong within, them. The
"Mocking Bird," or "Peter Gray," are either
of them worth the admission fee. The Gre
cian postures, by Fred Wilson, and his clog
dance, are inimitable, and always bring down
the house. To-night a new programme is
offered, and we expect to see a full house.
THE SALE OF PAINTINGS To-Der.—The
sale of the tine collection of paintings, which
is now on exhibition at Mr. Davis' sales room,
on Fifth street, will take place this morning,
commencing at ten o'clock. Without affect
ing a too critical knowledge on the subject., we
aro very certain the pictures generally are
worth far more than any price they are likely
to command in this market. There is not one
in the collection that will not, do credit to any
fireside it may contribute to adorn. No pro
cess in education tends so effectually to refine
the taste and improve the sentiments of the
youthful mind, as n familiarity with tl» works
of art, and espicially with the highest of them
all, the art of painting. The gallery will bo
opened to the public this morning from eight
clock until the time of sale. Ladies attend
ing the sale will have seats provided for thorn.
SINGULAR FUNERAL. RITES.—We noticed
yesterday the death of an Italian cripple, u
sort of mendicant, well known to many of our
our citizens. On Tuesday, his sister. who has
been absent from the city, returned, and pro
ceeded to decorate the corpse with red, white
and blue ribbons, tying them in the hair,
mouth, and other parts of the body. Thus
arrayed he was interred. We know not it
this be an Italian custom—at all events it is a
very singular one.
THE REaArrA, so lung talked of, is to come

At the time you preSented me with the first

severe ; - "atarrhal cough, accompanied by night
sweats, loss of appetite, and great debility,
which was daily increasing. In this state I
commenced taking the Syrup. The effect was
almost magical. In a few days, and before I
had used the second bottle, niy cough lessened,
night sweats ceased, appetite was restored, and
with it strength and vigor beyond what I had
enjoyed for ten years—being able to walk sev

hitherto I could only walk a short 'distance.

'MY TELEGRAPH.
Letter from Hon. Daniel E. Sickles.
New YORK, July 20.—The Herald of to
day contains a letter to the editor from Hon.
Daniel E. Sickles,-in which he corrects a state
ment made in that paper yesterday, regarding
the recent event in his domestic relations. The
reconciliation, he says, was my own act, with
out consultation with uny relative, connection,
friend or adviser. Whatever blame, if any
belongs to the stop, should fall upon me—l am
prepared to defend what I have done before
the only tribunals I recognize as buying the
slightest claim to jurisdiction over the subject,
my own 'conscience and the bar of Heaven. I
am not aware of any statute or code of morals
which make it infamous to forgive a woman ;
nor is it usual to make our domestic life a sub
ject of consultation with friends, no matter
how dear or near to us, and I cannot allow
even all the world combined to dictate to me
the repudiation of my wife, when I think it
right to forgive her and restore ber to my con
fidence and protection. If I ever failed to
comprehend the utter desolate pbsition of an
offending though penitent woman,7the hopeless
future, with all its dark possibilities of danger
to which she is doomed when proicribed as an
outcast, I can now see plainly enough in the
almost universal howl of denunciation with
which she is followed to my threshhold, the
misery and perils from which I have rescued
the mother of my child; and, although it is
very sad for me to incur the blame of friends,
and the reproaches of many wise and good
people, I shall strive to prove to all who feel
any interest in me, that if- I am the first
man who has ventured to say to the world
an erring wife and mother may be forgiv
en and redeemed, that in spite of all the
obstacles in my path, the good results of this
examplershall entitle it to the limitation of the
generous, and the commendation of the just.
There are many who think that an 4ct of duty,
proceeding solely from affections which can
only be comprehended in the heart of a hus
band and father, is to be fatal to my prof,-
sional, political and social standing. If this be
so, then so be it. Political station, profession
al success, social recognition, are not the only
prizes of ambition ; and so long as I do nothilig
worse than reunite my family under the roof
where they may find shelter front contumely
and persecution, I do not fear the noisy but
fleeting voice of popular clamor. The multi
tude accept their first impressions from a few,
but in the end men think fur themselves; and
if I know the human heart—and sometimes I
think that in the career of iningled sunshine
and storm, I have noticed nearly all its depths
—then I may reassure those who look with re
luctant forebodings upon my future, to be of
good cheer, for I will not cease to vindicate a
jutt claim to the respect of my fellows; while
to thole motley groups, here and there, who
look upon my misfortunes only as weapons to
be employed for any destruction, to those I say
one for nil, if a Mau make a good use of MS
enemies they will be as servie , •ablo to him 11.9
his friends. In conclusion, lut me ask only
one favor of those who, from whatever motive
may deem it necessary or agreeable to com
ment in public or privnto upon this sad history,
and that i., to nun all their arrows at my„
brew-t, and for the sake of my innocent child;
to spare her yet youthful mother while she
seeks in sorrow and contrition the mercy anti
pardon of Him to whom, sooner or later, we
must all appeal.
