A Hard Case.
On Saturday, in the Orphans' Court,
trict Attorney Collier moved that an attach.
ment be issued to bring Jeremiah M. Carpen
ter, of Westmoreland county, into Court, for
contempt, he having failed to pay into Court a
certain sum of money due Isabella Holloway,
widow of Wm. Holloway, deceased, as order
ed. It seems that the Auditor's : report of the
amount due Mrs. Holloway from the estate, in
the hands of the :administrator, Carpenter,
awarded her $176. Carpenter is worth noth
ing, and the widow, believing the chances of
obtaining her money desperate, made a con- .
tract, with James M. Carpenter and H. M.
Laird, of Greensburg, attorneys, agreeing to
give them $lOO of the claim if they succeeded
in collecting it. On the 2nd of July an order
was made in our Orphans' Court (the estate
being in this county) directing the administra
tqr to pay into Conn, within ten days, the $75
duo Mrs. Holloway. Hut instead of this, on
the 1.#14, he filed an affidavit, setting forth that
lie held a receipt from Carpenter, the attorney,
fur the amount. Mr. Collier held he had no
right tq pay ever to him, as he was no longer
the attorney of the widow, having, heen dis
-Missed by her, and therefore hp asked the
attachment to compel him to appear and pay
over the money. The Histrict Attorney also
exhihited a receipt, which bad been sent to
Mrs. Holleway, but which shti veryroperly
refased to sign, acknowledging the receipt
of
44q, in satisfaction of the claim, for tphicli sife
11qdfireri0/01Y agreed i e. put $6,0. The attach
. merit was ordered to issue, and was made re
turnable at ten o'clock. this morning. Judge
Iti'Clure made some severe comments on the
attempt to put off the claim of the widow, of
$175, as the residue of her husband's estate, for
$4O, and remarked that it would be better for
the administrator to pay her claim, as the
Court would protect her in her rights.
PITTSBURGH THRATRE.—They AM proceed•
ing very rapidly with the alterations and im
provements of this establishment, and we are
informed by the energetic manager, Mr.
Howe, that when completed it will be one
. of
the handsomest theatres in the States. The
novelty of the new act drop will cause no little
excitement when seen, as it is to be, in every
respect, an advertising
_medium for some of
our first-class tradesmen in the city, and an el
fent picture besides—the sublect of the centre
*
being a beautiful laridscape, surmount
ed by a massive gold frame of an elaborately
scrolled pattern, with white marble circular
tablets inserted in the scroll, twenty in num
ber, each tablet containing an advertisement - I
in burnished gold letters. The dome of the
auditorium is to be remodeled, and a handsome '
ventilator is to be substituted in place of the
Ist surface. Altogether, the arrangements
appear to be mostcomplete. A splendid stock
company, consisting of fifteen ladies' arid eix
*l4, gentlt4ntln, will form 'the tfeerps drama
liqne," and with sgeh q rPun Mr. Howe
(who is evidently apiacrifo/ Manager) at the
head, there is no doubt of a brilliant season for
our losers of the Old Drury of Pittsburgh.
INIPOSTORS—LOON. OUT FOR TWEIL—It will
be remembered that some six weeks since, a
man named:Wilson White, a stranger in this
vicinity, fell from the railroad tressel work in
Allegheny city, and received serious injuries.
Some two weeks after the occurrence, an old
woman, representing herself as his mother,
called upon a number of families in Allegheny
_city, with an anomalous document, purporting
to be the certificate of a physician attending on
hbeirjgre4 trpert. She. receiyed , some.money,
ut it was the general impression that she was
au impostor. We learn that another female,
much younger, is now going the papilds, with
the same. paper, stating that she is a sister of
White, chathe is destitute, Ac., thus exciting
sympathies 'of 'the public - and'Otkininitheir
purse-strings. :We would advise Otto be on
their guard against these persons, , as their ac
tions are very suspicious, and it is more than
probable that the unfortunate cripple in whose
name this money is ostensibly collected,-knows
nothing whatever of the matter.
InJuNcriox ISSUZD.--On Saturday morn
ing, in the United States Circuit Court, before
Judge McCandless, A. W. Loomis, Esq.,.read
the affidavits of certain firms in Cleveland, at
\--hose instance writs were issued against the
t uvulae . 9ounty 'flank, as vie aMted at the
time, setting 'forth thanhey had sent notes, of
coijsi~er le amOunt, to the for discount,
which had neither been cliscoqqte4 or returned
to them. Mr. Loomis asked for en injunction
to prevent the bank from converting or trans
ferring the notes. Mr. 7dagoffin, for the;Bank,
asked that the issuing of the injunction bo de
layed, as the notes had already been negritiated,
and were in the hands of innocent holders, and
he had not had sufficient time to prepare an
swers to the declarations. The objection was
overruled,"and the injunction asked for order

. A Raid against the Cyprians.
During last week some sixteen citizens and
gpoperty holders, residing on Seventh street,
and in the vicinity of the corner of Cherry and
Strawberry alleys sent a petition to Mayor
Weaver, asking him to abate the intolerable
nuisance caused by a nest of houses of infamy
in that locality, which they represented, had
become scandaloui.
:In accordance with thisrequest, on Saturday
afternoonol - hout two o'clock, the Mayor sent a
strong posse of police, with instructions to vis
it all the houses in the vicinity, and arrest tho
inmates. The officers did their duty well, re
turning to the office with thirteen degraded
women, who were lodgel in the watch-house.
At seven o'clock in the evening, a hearing
was had, and the women, with their paint and
tinsel, were arrayed before Mayor Weaver.
Mrs. Griffin- was arrested at her house on
the corner of Strawberry and Cherry alleys,
which is charged as being not only a disor
derly, but an .unlicensed drinking house. She
was held to bail in the sdm of three hundred
dollars for her appearance at. Court.
In the second story of this house, lived
Ann Green, better known as "Black Ann,"
who, with a girl named Sarah Hill, found in
the house, was committed to jail to answer
a charge of keeping an assignation and baw
dy house.
In an alley running oft Cherry, in the rear
of Mrs, Griffin, is another house, where the
police found a bevy of nymphs, Jane Mor
rison. Emily Wray, Sarah Wilkins, Mary
J. Williams and Sarah Johnson. The house
was kept by "big Jane," who, with all her
associates, was sent to jail to answer at Court.
On the opposite side of the alley lived Mrs.
Willoughby,. of some notoriety. With her
was found a fine looking girl named Muria
Pearce, who stated that she did not make her
home in the house, had only happened in, and
that she lived on Bedford street. The girl
was discharged, her statement being corrob
orated, but sirs Willoughby was sent to the
hill.
Above Strawberry alley, on Cherry, the
officers found' another pasty, consisting of
Lavinia Gardner, daughter of- Mrs.. Gardner,
the abortionist, and two "girls," named Tet
Richards and Sarah Lewis. Lavinia, the pro
prietress, found bail in three hundred dollars,
but the others were sent up.
The arrest of these parties occasioned some
excitement, and during their stav in the watch
house, crowds of visitors called to see them.
In the evening, eleven of them were march
ed up to jail in a body, followed by a crowd
of men and boys.
From the evidence produced before the
Mayor, these dens of iniquity have been a
great nuisance. One witness testified that a
hundred men had stopped At his house and
onqiiired the way to Morrison's. The testi
money of others was similar. Rev. G. Nach
trieb, pastor of the German M. E. Church,
situated on the .corner of Strawberry and
Cherry alleys, testified-that the Church and
school were seriously annoyed by these peo
ple, that they were a scandal to his congre
gation and kept many away from the Church.
This is a move in the right ciirectipn; there
are too many such pieces in our city, and
they should all be cleared out. They are
alike dtructive of morality, and productive
of cringe, and the sooner we are rid of such
sinks the better. If their proprietors once
understand there is no tecurity ter them, they
will soon leave the city. '4 few more de
scents would have an excellent effect, and
prosecution againstparties who rent their
`souses to persons of this character, would be
more effective.

TUE HOG ORDINARCE.-H has heretofore
been the custom, dtiring the hot weather, when
swine were found running at large to impound,

charges, but believing this will not remedy
the, evil the Mayor has adopted the plan
of (fining the owners one dollar for each hog
proven to be kept at large, under the Ordinance.
On Saturday; Jas. Fitzgerald, of the Sixth

allowing ten hogs to run on the public high
