Gold.
A cubic inch of gold is worth one hundred
and forty-six. dollars; a cubic Toot. two hun
dred and fifty-two thousand two hundred and
eightk-eight dollars; a cubic yard, , six
eight hundred and eleven thousand seven heti
dred and seventy-six dollars. The quantity of
gold now in existence is estimated to be three
thousand millions' of dollars, which, welded in
to one minis' could "be . contained in a cube of
twenty-three feet. ' . •
The relative -value of gold to silver, in the
days 'of the patriarch Abraham; was one to
eight ; at the period of B. C. 1000, it was one
to - twelve ; B. C. 500, it was one to thirteen ;
at the commencement of the Christian Era,
it was one to nine ; A. D. 500..4 was : tone to
eighteen; A. D. 1100, it was oneto eight; A.
D. 1400; it was one to eleven; A. D. 1618, it
was one to thirteen ; A. D. 1700, it was one to
fifteen and a half; which latter ratio; with
but slight variation, it has maintained to
the present day. Various speculations havo
recently been made respecting the effect of the
large relative increase in the proilaction of
Fold over silver, and the subject is one of great
interest and importance. The theories of tho
writers who have expressed opinions on the
subject, are widely different, so far as the effects
of the -increase upon the precious metals are
concerned. ' Ail agree, , however, upon the
wide spread benefits that have resulted from
the large increase of the production of gold
during the past ten yeaxs. The war in Europe,
and the crops in America, this year, will both
affect business relations so as to exert consider
able ,influence on the commercial values, di
redly, and indirectly upon the relative estimate
of the precious-metals.
