M'SIYuIiVirPOST - 71 - —DOWN TILE There, where a hidden - garden lies. Seen through the boughs of hawt kerne trees; There delicate odors faintly rise, And die away on the scented breeze; Far from the noise of the busy street. The hope of a quiet household meet; And the Cool, green turf is sprinkled o'er With the daisy, to the cottage door. - ' The sun shines there with deeper hue On the dark gray walls and the twinkling pane, And later lingers the morning dew, And softer falls the glittering rain, ' . , On the cwsements where the ivy vine And the climbing rase and the jessamine twine, That, flushed with bloom of the summer air, Open ,in fragrance and beauty there. The chimes. Aoatont on the perfumed gale With a mellow cadence and silvery strain; And the traveler leans on the garden pale And the dreams of his youth return again; For they'slenp till the echoes of music bring The scattered thoughts from their wandering; His heart is calms by thesoothing spell Swayed through the air by the village bell. Thus in each heart the sunshine fails On a fertile nook in a shadowed place And within the depths of its mossy walls Bloom the hopes and prayers that give it grace; And if blessed by the'notes of a simple strain It wilt break into blossoms of beauty again, The dewy tears will tell how deep Was the power that touched that leaden steep! 4. The Cause of the South Bend Tragedy. The. Chicago Times publishes a letter from South Bend, Indiana, in which it is stated that when the fatal culvert was constructed on the Michigan Southern road at that place, Mr. Hen ry Denslow, who owns the land at that point, and Mr. Aaron Webster, a prominent Citizen of the vicinity, warned the engineer that he was not making provisionsforthewaters of a flood. They remembered and reminded the engineer that, in a great freshet in 1840, when there was but a simple rivulet there, the heavy rains caused it to cut at that point a gulch twenty feat deep. The long shed of hills, six miles in ex tent, the surplus waters from which must pass that ravine, was pointed out to show the reason why; in dashing ruins, the insignificant stream becarbe a turbulent and destructive torrent. Science'triumphed, however, over the common sense of the farmers. And hence the woeful Ire ecly, iii Which more than a. hundred persons were' massacred outright or horribly mangled. The little stream, for which a culvert ten feet wide by six feet high was provided, became, after a violent summer rain storm, a powerfu stream, bearing down from its six miles of hills the usual drift. Some unlucky tree or log caught on the culvert, and presently it was choked up. The water ACCIIIIIIII4iPd fist, and, the thirty-feet-high sandy embankment was soon but a wall of almost liquid mud. The train-had been run with greatuaution over the part of the road, which in the darkness and storm was thought dangerous. It was believed by those running it that the worst was over.— The train ran upon the trap at the rate of at least twenty miles an hour, and its shock caus ing the flood to burst the flimsy barrier pre sented by the saturated embankment of sand, the train, with all its precious freight of human life, took the dreadful leap In the dark which has sent horror and mourning throughout the land. - Tax Roman correspondent of the Weekly . Reg ister, writes that Her Majesty queen Victoria has forwarded an autograph letter to the Pope, thanking his Holiness for his present of a beau• tiful mosaic table. The celebrated Abernethy says After haring cured the derangement of the bowels, - debility and all diseases generally disappear of thcir ulntt swoon, even to a short time." Dieexperience of a century hoe established the worth of these Pills beyond dispute, as a purgative anti-bilious medicine; on& their Ilse, by up wards of-1,000 conscientious physicist's, and by over million of families, shows that they are supplying on e of the wants of humanity, and are in advance of medical science. The above pills, although purely vegetable, are now known add used EN a substitute for calomel (Au drargyri Chloridzint Vic) producing all its alterative and other indications, with none of its disorganizing ef fects upon the solids—often crippling for life—or its iris tressi tag action upon the teeth and gums. The prepared concentration from the same principles—the Life Addi tion Pills—is a substitute for bine-pill (P2otw 17ydrargyri) possessing the peculiar action on tho secreting organs, of that preparation from mercury, but none of its sali vating or other injurious eftects. Those who have used them, as a bluepill substitute or otherwise, award to thorn the highest praise. They come nearer too concentrated Essence of Life than anything yet made, in the way of medicine, by man. A single pill given daily, when all hope has fled, has often restored health. In fact, they supply an organic principle to the blood, &WIVE wanting in ertreme eases of sickness. old people have the se cretions of early youth restored by the Life Addition Pills. Their value as life preservers IS beyond estimate. Brandreth'sVegetable:Universal Pills remove from the bowels and blood of a sick person the cause of death.
