SYMMFS, of Pittsburgh COUXTI BUILTUTOX: JOEI. RETCH - UM, cif.Elitsbeth DIIIICTOII 01 , SAY POOR: COL. THOMAS HEEL, of Tareutum UNITING THE DEMOCRATIC FARTS - . In numbers, the Deinocratie party was never stronger than at the present time. The .tendency of the political opinions of - ell classes of citizens is Democratic- The great princiPles of the Party were never more universally popular than now. Even those who profess to oppose us, are obliged to claim our doctrines in order to gain popu lar favor. There is, however, a difierence of opinion in our own ranks, upon certain cpiestions, and this difference prevents that entire union and harmony of the organiza tion which is necessary to insure success in . a great struggle like that which impends in 1860. There is too much importance given to these minor questions. Too much effort made to get all sorts of things into our plat forms.' Every body seems to have a plank, which he thinks ought to become a compo nentpart of the Democratic platform. We should turn our attention snore to practical results, and less to theories and declarations. No matter how good a plat form our Conventions may present, they cannot manufacture a good President out' of a bad or incompetent man, nor can any platform make a bad President out of a good, honest, competent man. While we should not undervalue principles, we should not suppose that a declaration of them, no matter how perfect and pure is all that is to be done in selecting a candidate for the Presidency. If we desire the greatest prac tical good to the country—if we seek to have the government in all respects well adminis tered, we must select for our candidate a man whose personal eh aflutter is without reproach, and whose political life has been one of steady . and harmionious co-operation with the great principles of the Democratic party. We must have a martof national oducatior, national feelings end: national knowledge— a man of both common sense and personal worth. With such :a martin the field, the Democracy might drop all difficult questions and run him upon the simple platform of pledging him and his party to a rigid observance of the constitution mid the law's.' On 'such a platform a..; this, all could unite. 71The Democratic feeling of the people of these States is strong, but harmonious !Action is rendered difficult by the introduction of -local and sectional issues. In the campaign of 1860 itmight be possible that the Demo crats of Allegheny county, small in numbers though they may be, might turn the scale in Pennsylvania, and thus'secure the election of a Democratic President. Is it not then the greatest of folly for them to throw away their power and influence for the sake of a local issue which has nothing to do with Democratic principles or with politics of any kind? Is it not time that the true National Democrats of the county should insist that Democratic principles, and not local issues should be the basiSofparty organization, and thus coneentre and strengthen the party for the coming contest? The calm thinking and just men of the party think it has been divided long enough upon minor and tin, important questions, and those who insist upon making tests of Democracy out of ir relevant local questions, have lost their pres tige with the people. SUNDAY RAILROAD TRAVEL. The restrictions upon travel on Passenger Railways on the Sabbath, imposed by existing laws, are speedily to be brought beforo the Courts in Philadelphia, for adjudication and interpretation. Several of the companies in that city commenced running their cars at regular intervals on Sunday last, whereupon the-Mayor-informed the officers of the com panies that if they persisted, he would be compelled-to interfere and require of them a strict observance of the law. He was in formed that the cars would be run at all hazards, if only to test the legality of the prohibitions against travel on Sunday, and the hope expressed that no unnecessary in .terference by the authorities would ensue. The first car was then started, but it had proceeded a short distance only, when Mr. Ruggles, accompanied by other officers, overtook it, and, arresting both the conduc to).and driver, took them beforo Alderman Hutchinson, by whom they were held to bail kr a further hearing. The Company being deteimined to run their cars, Mr. Ruggles is formed them he would make no further ATre.4l l , but would take the names of the conductoris, and drivers of all the cars that might - be , r6u, in order that they might be held . tre aionver. The cars continued run ning dtirlsig: the. day, And. were used by all classes of-th , O:ommunity, proving a very great advantage, - Nearly twice the number of passengers werecarried that have yet been carried over the road on a weekday, with the exception of the 4th Canal C 1869. \ The following gentlemen havO N been ap pointed commissioner to assess damageStm the North Branch Canal :1400. THE Archbishop of Paris (Cardinid liarlot) has refused to attend the Te Deura in honor of . the battle of Salferino. He reasons thus: "I cannot join in thanksgiving for the murder of fifteen thousand human beings, nor raise a hymn of joy founded upon the pain and misery of - others ; but 1,,wi1l sing a De Profundis and Requiem for Hie souls of the departed." Now, although it seems churlish, we think he is about correct, considering his "cloth." WILLIAM H. There arc plenty of good hotels suited to all classes of customers. The leading one, and the largest, is the United StateS; iii charge of two P e nnsylvanians, Messrs. They keep a capital house; prompt and ac commodating attendance; n . splendid table; well furnished rooms, and, in a word, no one ever stops at tbe,United States without becom ingimpressed with the fact that its proprietors are exactly the right kind of men to •' keep a hotel." The longest surf-heneh 'in the country is at Atlantic City. It extends fora distance of ten miles, affording a most, delightful drive in r% broad tired Jersey wagon. For a number of years this point was re gurded as a" graveyard of vessels," owing to the number which were lost on an immense bur about a mile from the shore, which now secures the surf fur the enjoyment and restore. tion of the debilitated world who seek healtl ii=e. At this place the United States Gov!. ernwent has erected and maintains ono of the largest light-houses in the country. At the present time some capitalists are engaged with a diving bell in endeavoring to secure a largo amount of quicksilver which was lost in a yea. eel which was wrockial some time ago. The summer hegira has aliss.idy commenced, and Nahant, Niagara, Cape May, Atlantic City, Saratoga, Bedford and Fayette Springs, are becoming the theme of conversation among the fashionable world, and ere long all w ill h e overflowing with the fashionable population of our great cities. :• We in this bleulity are peculiarly favored, for in a few hours ride by railroad we base access to ono of t h e most agreeable summer re sorts in the country, Cresson. Here all the re ouisites for enjoyment are combined in sin un usual degree, pure air, magnificent scenery, so elusion, and the best of accommodations. Application for rooms should be made early, as many visi tors have alroeady gone there for the summer.• . , . . A Cooking Stove fired tiy ordinary gas, has recently been patented. It copsists of an iron Plate on which any required number of small gas stoves, connected by means of guar/perch(' tubes girth ordinary gas burners, are , placed. These gas stoves are portable, being not larger than a coffee pot, and can be used:in- sfy part of the house containing a gas burner. The combustion is most perfect, and the quantity of gas required astonishingly small. It is more cleanly and mere economical than coal tires. saving a great deal of labor. The apparatus can be used for all the purposes fur which fur naces aro used, even for baking bread, roasting Meat and heating flat-irons. The heat can he regulated to any degree required, and one great advantage for tho summer consists in this, that it does not, like ordinary stoves, heat the house. The Attitude of Prussia.
