PITTSBURGH_ POST.
"LOST, STOLEN, OR STRAYED!"
TUE NOTE-BOOK OF 'll SIEDICAL STUDENT
BY AUGUSTA. JOHNSTONE
Authoress of Recollectious of Mrs. Esther Taffatus;
[CONCLUDED.]
"My lady rose up from her chair.
"'What does this mean, Annie? she said.
"I NM too eager to exonerate myself and
my fellow-servants at that minute, to have
much regard for the noble presence Iliad in
truded on, not being indeed, ut any time, over
awed by contact with great folks, from whom
Ihad seen a good many little actions; therefore
I said—
"' Please, mylady, will you listen to what I
have to say ?'
"'Good Heaven !'said her ladyship, holding
her scent-bottle to her nose, and turning to my
lord, who stood on the hearth, - 'is she de
ranged, do you think ?'
" No, my lady,' said I, am not mad, if
you mean that ; but you accused us, my lady,
in the servants' hall, of stealing your diamonds,
I said then, my lady, as I say now, it is'nt al
ways poor folks who steal. If you my lady,
or my lord, or any other lady or gentleman,
will please come with me to Lady Mosshill's
room, I'll show you, my lady, who is the real
thief ; and the true cense of 'your servants, my
lady, being wronged.'
" When I said diamonds, my lady jumped
up quite alert, though she had been fainting a
few minutes before, in the fear that I was a
lunatic.
" 'My diamonds?' said she. ' Lead on, girl ;
I'll follow you.'
" I wanted no more. Turning round, I ran
up-stairs, followed by my lord, my lady, my
lady's brothers, and one or two of the visitors.
Curiosity is as groat in One people as in poor
servants. We never stopped till we got to
Lady Mosshill's apartments. I unlocked the
bed-room door, brought my lady to the valise,
took the case out (acknowledging I had looked
into it,) opened it, and asked my lady if those
were her jewels. She was silent for a moment
from amazement, and I belive horror ; for
though lady Cornberry never scrupled to be
lieve ill of a poor servant, she was dreadfully
shocked to find that a Countess could be a thief.
When every one bad become quite convinced,
however, that Lady Mosshill was the culprit,
I was dismissed, and my lord and lady, with
their guests, descended to the drawing,-room.
Dinner had been waiting some time, and after
some talk, they all went to the dining-room,
with the exception of my lord, and Lord John,
my lady's eldest brother; those gentlemen re
tired into the library, and had a tray taken
there to them.
"The fruit of their resolves was soon knouin ;
James was summoned, and he came down to tell
us that one of tlurgrooms was to take a horse
and ride directly to Milberry Castle—the place
to which Lady Mosshill had gone on a visit.
This groom we found was a bearer of a letter to
Lady Mosshill ; and the English ladies' maid
informed us that my lady told berth° letter
was from my lord, forbidding the noble culprit
to return to his house. Certain it is, she never
came back ; and my lord himself searched Lady
Mosshill's trunks before ner things were sent
to Mulberry after her. Then we heard my lord
at the same time had written an account of the
whole affair to Lord Mosshill, who did not
write a reply, but came himself to my lord;
and there was a terrible scene.
"Lord Mosshill refused, at first, to believe
his wife's guilt ; and 1 was sent for to the library,
where my lord and ho were to hear my testi•
mony. 1 had rejoiced in my deed till that mo
ment when I saw that strong man, that noble gen
tleman, the great statesman, the loving hus
band—for even Lord Mosshill's enemies gave
him that credit—bowed with the great grief ;
my heart relented, and I burst into a fit of
violent tears.
" Lord Cornberry desired I would tell Lord
Mosshill all I knew. For some minutes 1
could not speak for my sobs ; but Lord Mosshill
came to me, and, poor servant girl though 1
was, and the cause of great sorrow to him, took
my hand and adjured me solemnly, as I cared
for peace here or hereafter, to tell the truth. I
felt as if I were on trialfor life ordeath. Seine
how, all my scorn for rank deserted me, and I
told the whole from first to last, concealing noth
ing, not even my curiosity and wioug behavior
in looking into 'Lady Mosshill's valise. When
I had concluded, my lord swore me to the truth
of my statement on the Holy Bible. And I
was dismissed, sorrowful and repentant enough.
I do not mean that I should have concealed the I
truth out of regard tolady Mosshill's rank and I
station, but I certainly was overstepping duty,
and only gratifying my revenge, to expose the
lady to strangers by the violent manner in
which I stated the truth.
is What happened afterwards Mlle Therese
and Miss Dormer told me. Lord Mosshill,
whets indeed convinced of the truth, implored
My lord to hqsh the matter up. His family
was one of the oldest in England, and I have
always heard, one of the proudest. The blow
of such a discovery went nigh to break Lord
Mosshill's heart. He, however, firmly did his
duty. He broke open the drawers, jewel cases and
private repositories of his Countess, sod found
all Lady Cornberry's missing jewels. They I
were returned with an epistle to my lady her-
self. that; Miss Dormer said, would have
touched the heart of a tigress to show mercy.
flat for her bosom friend my lady had none ;
she said matters had gone toe far to bo con 1
pealed—that my loid, to his first wrath, had
sent for his solicitor; and revealed all At the
MAO time Lord Mosshill received my lord's
letter, he received also ono from the lawyer,
demanding restitution of the stolen jowely.
" Whoever set the matter afloat, this is cer
tain: the day after the discovery the whole
affair was in the newspapers ; and it cost Lord
Mosshill large sums to suppress all further ap
pearance of the matter in the journals df the
day. But by that time the matter was quite
notorious enough in high circles; and Lord
Mosshill received an intimation from the very
tioest quarter that Ids huly 114 better tse'vel.
that is the pelite mode of haniShment
tAys, / believe ; find to travel, Lord and Lady
Mosshill were forced.
* a * * * * *
"I lived long enough in my lady's service'to
know the end of this strange story ; and when..
the end came, considering the share I had ta
ken in it, I was, I assure you, by no means a
happier woman for the knowledge. About five
years after her banishment from the British
Court, Lady Mosshill returned. My Lady and
her daughters ono night were proceeding, in
their carriage, to a splendid fete at --Pal
ace. Some stoppage occurred in Piccadilly,
and my lady, to beguile the time, was lociking
eliOe't; per. SuddenlY het c'oi'fed' on a lady,
who, sitting in a Weeny,' half concealed by
powering plants, was watching sadly the gay
cavalcade of splendid equipages.. The eyes of
these ladies met. Id y lady uttered a slight
shriek, and sank back in per carriage ; tho lettY
in the balcony fainted dead away. She was
taken thence to her bed, from which she never
rose !
Shame--remorse—humiliation--death itself
punished the crime of Lady . Mosshill ; a crime
aggravated by her attempt to cast it on poor
servants. For her, pity I think would be use
less and foolish; though, as I have said, my
share in tier deteetiqn gave me trouble enough
—especially when I heard of her death. But
fonthe disgrace inflicted on those who before
never knew shame—for the injuries inflicted
on innocent sufferers—l can only say she scarce
deserved forgiveness ; but I 44 it wittier still
(especially now years have made me assadder,
wiser woman) to forgive myself !"

MACHINES
Have gained the confidence
of all who use them. and hove
proved one of the most valu
able inventions of the age.
. _ . They use a Sbuttlermaking
the Lock Stitch on both sides of the cloths, bieh
cannot be unravelled or pulled out.
They are all made with the highest mechanical skill,
and all warranted to work well on all kinds of goods,
from the Lightest Fabric to Heavy Leather. In partiett-'
tar, we would call the attention of all to our new Family
Sewing Machine. It has been manufactured expressly
for Family Use, and has met with favor from aIL It is
so simplified as to render it almost impossible to get out
of order, or derange its operations; indeed it is so sim
ple as to astonish one, that so small a piece of mechan
ism will sew.
Below, we give a description of the ditterent styles of
the Weed Patent-
No. 1. Is a very convenient style, which can be
worked by hand or foot, on or off its - own table. For
convenience of shipping, and also for large manufacto
ries, where it is necessary . to Owen number of Machines
into a long bench, making one table answer for them
all. Price, flin.
No. 2. With Walnut or Mahogany Table, either with
or without Box Top, which locks down. Price, $lOO
and $llO.
No. 3. Same size as No. 2, but runs with a belt, and
at s much higher rate of speed. This kind is well
adapted to manufacturing Clothing or Leather work.
This is really the cheapest Machine in the market, as
there is no work done on a Sewing Machine that it will
not do. It is confidently asserted that this Machine
runs easier than any machine now in use. Price, Sloo.
No. 4. This machine has a long arm, to accommo
date large work. It, runs at s; high rate of speed, runs
easily, and is, without doubt, the best 'Machine for Tail
or's use, ever aimed to the public: It is also peculiarly
fitted for plantation work, as it is very simple yet sub
stantial and durable, with but little liability to get out ot.
order. Price, SIM.
No. 5. This is a new and cheaper style, mid a gcnl
err& favorite for Family, Light Leather. sad a griait
variety of work. IL has been gotten up with reference
to furnishing a strong and durable, yet light auil tasty
ALachine,at a less prize than either of the abOV, It
runs-Very, easy, rapidly, and is'prenouneed the-best
machine now in market, for sso: • • a
No. 6. This is a Machine got np on an.entiroly new
principle, different from anything ever before offered
to the
_public, and we confidently assert that for family
use it has not an equal. It is very light and tasty, runs
very rapidly: is almost noiseless in its operation,. and
uses a stralgkt needle. It is so arranged as to be
utterly impossible to miss stitches. It has a tension on
both sides, and carries a large supply of thread on the
under spool. The motions are gamed by two small
cranks that run without perceptible noise. The two
threads are worked in such a manner as never to both
pull at the same time, and consequently little liable to
break. The seam is very elastic, and the thread does
thanak in waahing. It will do coarse work better
a any machine now in market, as it uses silk, cotton
or linen with equal facility. Price, $lO.

The first place in public estimation . is now justly ac
corded to the Grover h Ili•xer Machine, for family sew
ing, for the following reasons:-Ist. Ris more simple
and easily kept in order than any other Machine. 2d.
It makes a seam which will not rip or ravel, though every
third stitch is cut. Id. It sews from two ordinary spooLs,
and thus all trouble of winding thread is avoided, while
the same machine can be adapted at pleasure, by amere
change of spools, to all varieties of work. .Ith. The same
machine runs silk, linen thread, common spool cotton,
with equal facility. sth. The seam is as elastic as the
most elastic fabnc, so that it is free from all liability to
break in washing, ironing, or otherwise, 6th. The stitch
made by this machine is more beautiful than any other,
made either bypand or machine.
